A look ahead at how Scotland’s last 16 clash could look like if they qualify for the next round of Euro 2024.

Scotland kept their Euro 2024 hopes alive on Wednesday after banking a crucial point in a tough outing against Switzerland in Cologne. After their hefty opening defeat to Germany, Steve Clarke’s side have been left with a mentality mountain to climb, and thanks to their 1-1 draw against the Swiss, they are still in with a chance of reaching the summit.

There is a lot riding on Scotland’s final group match against Hungary, as a victory could see them progress beyond the group stages of a major tournament for the first time in their history. However, even with a three-point scoop in Stuttgart on Sunday, the Tartan Army aren’t guaranteed a place in the last 16 as things stand.

While the top two countries in each group will make it through to the round of 16, an extra four teams will also advance from the pool of those who finish third. The four best-performing third-placed sides will take up the final spots in the next round.

If Clarke and his men do progress to the round of 16, who are they expected to come up against?

At the time of writing, there is little to separate first and second in all three groups mentioned, with just goal difference currently deciding the rankings. Spain lead Group B ahead of Italy, Romania are just ahead of Slovakia in Group E, and Türkiye are a whisker in front of Portugal in Group F.

When and where will Scotland play in Euro 2024 last 16?

The date and venue of Scotland’s potential last 16 clash depends on who they are drawn against. If they take on the winners of Group B, they will compete in Cologne on June 30th.

A draw against Group F winners will result in a July 1st meeting in Frankurt, while a game against the winners of Group E will set up a clash in Munich on July 2nd.

Can Scotland finish second in Group A?

While Scotland’s most likely outcome is a third-placed finish in Group A, it is still possible for them to sneak into second depending on the rest of the results. If the Tartan Army beat Hungary 3-0 in Stuttgart this weekend and Germany produce the same scoreline win over Switzerland, the Scots will leapfrog into second place on goal difference. It’s an extremely tall ask but not mathematically impossible in this already thrilling Euro 2024 tournament.
