Major emergency services operation under way outside Harvey Nichols in Edinburgh's St Andrew Square

St Andrew Square has been closed by police

A major emergency services operation was under way in Edinburgh’s St Andrew Square this morning after a man fell from the balcony at Harvey Nichols.

Emergency services descended on the busy city centre square at around 11.35am today, with the pavement outside Harvey Nichols department store having been taped off by police.

Multiple ambulance crews and police officers were in attendance and Harvey Nichols has also been evacuated as a result.

Multrees Walk, which runs down the side of the shop, remains open to pedestrians.

Images taken at the scene show a green tent in place on the pavement outside Harvey Nichols, with ambulances parked at the side of the road.

Lothian Buses said the ET1 and CS1 services have been diverted away from the area “until further notice”.

A spokesman said: “Due to a road closure buses are unable to serve St Andrew Square and are instead bypassing and continuing on South St David Street until further notice.”

Police Scotland has been approached for comment.
