POLICE in the United States are reportedly using the controversial video game Grand Theft Auto IV to catch internet paedophiles.
Officers are playing the online multiplayer version of the game, designed by Edinburgh-based company Rockstar North, in an attempt to spot potential offenders.

Thomas Kish, a detective lieutenant in the Michigan State Police, said: "Child predators are migrating from traditional methods to alternate media. They are going to places where children are."

In December last year, Michigan prosecutors sentenced a man to ten years in prison for using the game World of Warcraft to lure a 12-year-old girl into having sex with him. It was later discovered that he had used a variety of other online games to pursue children.

It is understood Microsoft have also been co-operating with the police, advising them on how to extract certain information.

Grand Theft Auto IV became the fastest selling video game of all time when it was released earlier this year, selling more than 3.6 million copies in its first day of release.

Surely they'd be better off playing the video game "I Like To Do Bad Things To Kids".

5 I think it's an option after you have reached Level 12. Ask Boy Wonder.

:)

Seriously though, there are a million and one ways to groom children on the net (Look , I DONT , but using my imagination I can think of many).

The problem here is that there is a dangerous connotation here for idiots to assume those that play video games are likely trying to groom children.

If this is widespread, theres also home use of PS's and Wii (which both have wifi connectivity).

Sounds more like a justification for younger members of Michigan State police to faff about on GTA all day !

As the game has an 18 rating, I fail to see how anyone under the age of consent would be playing it anyway.

#6 Beat me to it, think the parents letting their kids play an 18 certificate online need to wise up.

Attention paedophiles! Instead of focussing your attention on under-age girls and boys, why not try grooming pets and entering them in Crufts?
