Women left counting the cost of city's pay gap

WOMEN in Edinburgh earn an average of £4500 less than men, new figures have revealed.
The gender gap in the city means that while men in full-time jobs can now expect an average gross income of £31,845, women employees are still lagging behind with £27,238.

Equal opportunities groups today predicted it will be at least 20 years before women are on an even footing and called for Government action.

But business leaders insisted no employers would pay a woman less for doing the same job as a man, and said the gap has more to do with the number of women in poorly-paid occupations.

The figures, compiled by the council's city development department, show full-time wages in the Capital are significantly higher than the rest of Scotland, where the average for males is £28,522, and females £22,916.

While the gender gap in Edinburgh has narrowed gradually since 2002 - when there was a £5700 difference - the rate at which the wages have neared has slowed in the last year.

Rowena Arshad, commissioner of the Equal Opportunities Commission Scotland, said while the situation has been improving since the Equal Pay Act of 1975, the gap was not closing fast enough.

"Recent figures show that it will be another 20 years until women and men working full-time receive equal pay. That is 20 years too long.

"This must be tackled as a national priority."

Graham Bell, a spokesman for the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, denied companies in Edinburgh were paying women less for doing the same job as men.

"It doesn't make economic sense or legal sense for any business to discriminate against women. They need the best people and there is a shortage of skilled workers in Edinburgh so it would be nonsense if anyone suggested they will look to discriminate in terms of sex.

"A major part of these trends is that there are a number of lower-paid occupations predominantly taken up by women, such as cleaning, catering and nursing."

The figures surprised Sarah Robertson, who moved to Scottish Life as a 17-year-old in 2000 and worked her way through a series of promotions in the St Andrew Square-based firm's marketing department.

The 23-year-old, who left the company to set up her own web design and public relations firm, Creative State, in 2005, said: "I have seen definite signs that the gap is closing. When I first joined Scottish Life it was a male-dominated office, especially in terms of management and team leaders.

"When I left, there were almost as many women as men."

I note that despite an underrepresentation of women in jails, the feminists aren't whining that the government should take action to jail more women.

My husband has agreed (in prinicple - nothing in writing yet) to soon be supporting me full time while I achieve my goal of long lunches, shopping and of course baking...

Not to mention ensuring an endless supply of clean, ironed shirts and dinner on the table every night....

Counting down those hours until I can get that apron on....

Try being a scottish shipbuilder. Women would get equal pay. i.e. ZERO. What is wrong with this design-brief, I pondered? She will be the best ship of her kind on the planet and a sister to Lavranos' notable "Al Masaha". What is missing? SEX APPEAL.

Ergo we've shelved that design and currently work on a twin free-standing ketched rigged sailing trimaran. Could we keep up with Ellen MacArthur's racing B & Q?

women should be at home cooking ,having babies and looking after them, not letting the feral kids run the streets ,keeping the house clean,and doing the other things like washing and ironing,etc,doing the shopping ensuring they do not forget the beer when football is on the tele, that is the role they were given in our society,and it prevails in many cultures in the world,and works very well,

I will aspire to opening a Ladies Housewives college one day and teaching more money focused, career driven women to discover the benefits of baking and ironing in return for diamonds and cars... I shall call it HenPen's Perfect Housewife Finishing School....

So much more rewarding than trudging to work every day in a thankless office! :-)

Yes women should be paid the same for doing the 'SAME' job. But as we know a woman with the same job title does not neccessarily do the same job as a man. Many women are not physically capable of doing the same work as a man so therefor they do not do the same job and should not be paid the same, regardless of their 'job title'.

Her comment takes no account of the different occupationsd that men and women work in, nor the negative impact in many careers that taking time off to have children has, nor the fact that more part-time workers are women are men.

She is implying that no matter all of this, the average wage for men and women must be artificially juggled to produce the same output figure, no matter the added value that the labour of a person produces. Output is all that matters, according to her.

To illustrate, in 2006 there was yet again the usual sort of hoo-ha about the fact that the winner of Men's Wimbledon got paid more than Women's Wimbledon. I was curious about the veracity of the claims that women were underpaid, so did an analysis (yes, I know, how very sad!). In 2006 Wimbledon, whether you compare it by number of games played, number of sets played, or length of matches played, not only were the women not underpaid, they were in fact overpaid forthe amount of work they were actually doing. However, the screaming harpies shrieked so loudly that in 2007, Wimbledon switched to equal pay for the winners of the men's and womens' tournaments. So women there are now massively overpaid.

#7 Absolutely correct. If you study the sentences that men receive against those that women receive for similar crimes, women, where there is judicial discretion, receive much lower sentences. And then we have some people arguing that it is barbaric jailing women at all.

This is just more massage figures to keep people 'angry' on the subject so the government can employ several thousand people in some sort of 'task force' to address a problem which doesn't really exist.

I worked with a company with over 1200 emplyees and there was NO such pay difference. Same job same pay ... Women did tend to fill up the less responsible positions, presumabley through a lifstyle choice, which is perhaps what these figures really mean ... but 'career' women, of which there tends to be less, usually did very well with strong progressive moves up the pay scales ....

The only way that 'wimmin' are not equal to men is if they think it .... The main problem is that people with chips on their shoulders go crying to government for 'descrimination' etc etc ... all they actually need to do is lose the 'chip' and get on with the job, be effective and generally pleasant to your co-workers and you'll probably find people treat you differently.

Folk love to blame their own failures on others these days.

Where do these statistics come from? Are they the results of real, genuine surveys, or does some journalist just dream them up?

Many (probably most) men and women are earning nothing like these incomes in this country.

The shortfall applies to both men and women from my experience and certainly so based on the so-called average incomes quoted here.

No.26 has nailed it exactly. In my 20 years of work I have worked beside many women doing the same job and salaries were exactly the same. It is impossible trying to compare the 2 sexes in such a generic way as this report though. I know lots of women who work part time or flexi through choice so this multiplied across the country alone will create very different average salaries without even taking into consideration the job types.
As far as I am aware and have come across people in this country are paid for the "job" and aren't then penalised if they are green, pink, transexual, diasbled or half pengiun. Obviously there are always exceptions but in general I think that apart from the chip on the shoulder brigade things are done pretty fairly.
