WEST Lothian Council is inviting residents to have their say over BT's plans to remove ten public payphones.
Payphones cost BT around £1000 a year each in upkeep, and the company said most of the network of 5883 Scottish payphones was hardly used due to the rise in the use of mobiles.

In West Lothian, calls from payphones are said to have roughly halved over the last three years, and BT now wishes to consult on the removal of the ten public payphones until August 18.

Council leader Peter Johnston said: "We are in discussions with community councils and are now gathering information to justify whether these payphones should be removed.

"We want to hear what residents think of the proposals."

How is it that BT thinks EVERY man, woman and child can afford to own a cell phone? They cost more to use than a landline! So if one's landline connection is down, then the little red phonebooth down the road is a godsend! Etc...

I agree with Miss Pixie.

Even if you have a mobile, what happens at 3 in the morning in pouring rain when your car breaks down and your phone batteries are flat?

Does anybody use pay phones these days. Half have no phone attached and the other half are covered in pee

Exactly #3: Unless West Lothian Council describe this as the simultaeneous removal of public toilets, half the population are going to wonder "What payphones?"

They could use them as meeting places for Liebour MPs in a few months time.

The call boxes I mean. Too big for that purpose perhaps?

#2 Petrolhead: Just stroke your lucky white heather and turn to that sunny disposition that keeps you smiling.
Trust me , your glass is half full no matter how hard you try to wallow in the dark side.

Your car breaks down AND your mobile phone has no power all in the same night? I'd suggest you are a wee bit unlucky. Nevermind, breaking down outside a public telephone box was a stroke of luck eh. Finding that the phone has been nicked by the local Buckfast drinking 12 year old brings you crashing back to reality.

I can't remember the last time I drove past a telephone box with a paying customer inside it. Shut them all down and cut my mobile telephone bill.
