IRAQI forces clashed with Shia militias in the southern oil port of Basra today as a security plan to clamp down on violence between rival factions began.
Muqtada al-Sadr's headquarters in Najaf ordered field commanders with his Mahdi Army militia to go on high alert.

Gunmen also clashed with guards from the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council at the entrance of Baghdad's main Mahdi Army stronghold of Sadr City, police said.

I fear that, no matter how long it takes, when the occupying forces leave Iraq there will be a bloodletting and a costly civil war.

Now the cynic in me - muttering, "Let's leave and let them get it over with." - is competing with the optimist saying, "Perhaps, if we stay long enough, at least we can minimise the effect."

So far, the cynic is winning.

The establishment of another rogue State should be prevented as it would defeat the object to bring freedom to the people of Iraq and make Iraq a role model for the rest of ME to follow.
It is going to be hard and painful, but once the agitators are removed, then it should happen.

Hello All,

Would someone show me a SINGLE Muslim Democratic State where people do not die at the drop of the proverbial hat, when power plays ensue?

I would argue that doctrines and strictures of Islam (the Noble Quran and the Hadith, which are the Sunnah) precludes democracy from ever working as it is supposed to and as it does in the West.

Iraq will be no different: the country should have been partitioned into three separate autonomous but intra-dependent countries; one for Kurds, one for Sunni, one for Shia.

All oil proceeds to be equally divided. A Unified Military Command, each consisting of one-third, numerically speaking, from each Member State, with a Commanding Triumvirate, with Commander-in-Chief on a rotating basis, to make sure that the Member States remain safe from each other and outside states.

What we've got now simply won't work.

Cheers from the Rockies
