ALEX SMITH insisted today that Vladimir Romanov knows NOTHING about Scottish football managers if he reckons they're not good enough for Hearts.
Smith, chairman of the Scottish Managers Association, was outraged by comments from Romanov yesterday, claiming that Scottish coaches are part of a "local footballing mafia" and that the club was staring relegation in the face with interim boss Ste
phen Frail's time in charge. That provoked a furious reaction from Smith, who pointed out that some of Europe's top managers in recent history have come from Scotland. Smith is fiercely protective of Scotland's bosses and insisted Romanov would be better served checking his facts before opening his mouth.

Romanov, who is still smarting from Mark McGhee's decision to turn down the manager's job at Tynecastle in favour of a new contract with Motherwell, revealed that it's highly unlikely that the club's new boss will be a Scot because the "locals" are part of a Scottish mafia and "wouldn't be able to rise above that".

But Smith said: "Vladimir Romanov doesn't know anything about Scottish managers, past or present, at other clubs. He should remember that and remember where he is working. We've produced some of the top managers in the game. Alex Ferguson won the Champions League with Manchester United last season and Walter Smith took Rangers to the final of the UEFA Cup. Gordon Strachan has also been very successful at Celtic.

"Mark McGhee is doing very well too right now and only a few weeks ago, he was the man Vladimir Romanov wanted as the new manager of Hearts. He did everything he could to try to entice him to Tynecastle."

Romanov claimed that Frail, who was placed on "gardening leave" two weeks ago before eventually severing all ties with Hearts yesterday, almost got his side relegated from the SPL. That's despite the fact Frail, who took over when the Tynecastle side were sitting tenth in the league, lost only three of the 13 games he was in charge of before the split. Hearts have had a string of Scottish managers, including Jim Jefferies, John Robertson and Craig Levein, and Smith hit out at the treatment of Frail.

"If you look back at the Scottish managers they have had at Tynecastle in recent years, not one of them has done anything that would blemish their record and indeed the majority of them have done very well for the club," said Smith. "If you look at the most recent one, Stephen Frail, he is just a young man who was thrust into a major role at a Scottish club. He can hold his head high for the way he carried the job out – he did it with dignity, which is saying something considering everything he had to contend with.

"Mr Romanov needs to stop coming out with these comments because they are helping no-one, least of all himself."

The usual over-reaction and misrepresentation from the weegie mafia :o).

He did not say all Scottish managers aren't good enough - just a significant number are steeped in OF folklore and have neither the desire or belief to get in amongst the Ugly sisters. VR stated that he was not percluding the possibility of appointing a Scot.

Imagine if David Murray had said this - they would have set up a panel to investigate why Scottish managers were so bad!

Vlad comes out with enough insanity so no need to distort or exaggerate these comments, which are basically true.

Given that Alex Smith was the man who took Aberdeen back to where they were pre-Ferguson, I don't give his views any credibility at all.

I would rather have Vlad picking the team than Alex Smith

Other than purchasing HMFC by transferring debt and paying of some shareholders can you tell us what has Romanov done that is positive to enhance the reputation of HMFC on the playing field and and in the community?

He did at one have the best new manager to come into SPL club football in a long time, it was just sad it only lasted 12 league matches.

Smith opens fire on Vlad?

If his aim is as good as his management abilities, Romanov needn't worry.

Smith is a complete no-mark, and someone who has benefitted from the "management mafia" his entire career.

#6 - you'll be aware that Romanov was in Downing Street the other day to accept an award on behalf of HMFC for our community work, aye?

Off the top of my head - free strips/tours and tickets for every 7 year old in the land, breakfast clubs for kids and an adult literacy programme (something which a few on here could do with enrolling in).

I think it's fair to say he's done not too badly on that front.

Further to my comments yesterday - I say it again. I can't believe people would want to defend Romanov - he has never done anything positive for Hearts, never mind the Scottish game.

I would be worried about those people behind him. They give him money through season tickets, shirts etc. Do they also think like him. They are living here among us! Worring thought!

#6 Possibly the best post this week
We are a joke and that has nothing to do with our players and it is not just a joke to outsiders
We are even a joke to us Jambos and we have no option till whatever happens next!

Smith was a poor manager and that is why he is now the chairman of the Scottish Managers Association. Another example of the mafia caring for each other.

Well done to the supporters of Hearts for all THEY have done on behalf of the club in the community.

Maybe it should have been one of those volunteers picking up such a prestigious award on behalf of the club.

Again what does Vlad do for either the product on the pitch or community. I may be wrong and you would probably know better Vlad is rarely in the community?

Cheers to the off the field work done in the area by HMFC supporters!!!

While not a Jambo I do find it strange that Smith comments regularly on Hearts matters when he was strangely silent when Rangers poached Wattie from the national job, or when the Hibs players met Petrie behind Collins back, or when Levein commented on OF refs.

#13 - I'm not going to argue with you, as you are being deliberately obtuse. The initiatives I mentioned were created by the club, not the supporters.

Of course, perhaps Campbell Ogilvie et al did all this behind Romanov's back without his permission? That couldn't be though, because as we all know he is the football equivalent of Pol Pot.........

Was not looking for any argument, I posted twice re. the club owner and again no significant answers to the points.

I guess deflecting Vlad has had an effect on some supporters.

Alex Smith has obviously read the papers take on what was said, and their creative journalism with the words used. He has commented on things which were never said.

Salvatori,

17 - Exactly. His reading obviously only extends to The Sun and their not known for their accurate journalistic portrayals are they?!

I'm no VR fan, but we all know when VR said he was Hearts manager for instance, that it was said tongue in cheek. The Sun take it as gospel, and their more challenged readers lap it up up as fact.

Romanov knows nothing about football and even less about football, the man is a joke.[like most of his signings]
