TWO distinctive lanterns have been stolen from outside the city's Japanese Consulate.
Lothian and Borders Police have put out an appeal for information after the two striking lanterns were stolen over the weekend.

The incident happened sometime during Saturday evening, when the two black and gold lamps were removed from the pillars at the front gates of the building on Melville Crescent.

The lanterns would have been difficult to remove as they are both made from wrought iron. They stand 5ft tall with a portcullis at the crown.

A police spokesman said: "This is an extremely unusual theft, given both the size and unique qualities of these items.

"We hope that given their distinctive appearance anyone who may be approached to buy them would recognise them and inform police."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Police on 0131-311 3131 or Crimestoppers on 0800-555 111.
