RISING eerily into the night sky, they're unidentified, flying and orange.

Captured on camera (pictured above) in the Braid Hills area on Saturday night, these strange balls of light sparked notions of an alien landing somewhere in Morningside.

Several people reported sightings of the glowing objects between 8.50pm and 9pm. Student Lyle Brennan, 19, of Marchmont, was out walking in the hills with his friend Sam Mackay 20, when they saw the strange lights.

Mr Brennan said: "When we looked back over our shoulders we could see a succession of fiery orange lights moving across the sky. They appeared to be coming from the hills in groups of two or three, moving north very slowly and gradually burning out after about a minute."

A number of other people had stopped to watch the lights when Mr Mackay took a brief video clip of them on his mobile phone.

While no-one reported the sightings to the police, others have contacted the Evening News to ask what the strange lights were.

Mr Brennan added: "We passed maybe five or six people who had stopped their cars and were looking at the lights. I thought at first they would be flares, but they seemed to move too slowly for that, and then just disappeared."

Air traffic controllers noted nothing unusual on Saturday night, and the Army also struggled to come up with an explanation.

An Army spokeswoman said: "It could be that what they have seen are parachute illumination flares being used at one of our training ranges at Dreghorn.

"These are used to light up an area for troops. They are incredibly bright, travel very slowly and would be fired in groups of two or three, so it would fit the description.

"We did have Territorial Army troops carrying out training at Dreghorn on Saturday, and while we don't know if they used flares, that would be one explanation.

"Of course, I can't say for certain. It could have been a genuine UFO sighting."

An Edinburgh Airport spokesman said a recent switch to another runway had led to an increasing number of planes approaching from Midlothian and across the Fairmilehead and Morningside areas of the city.

Michael Mulford, a spokesman for the RAF, said that no operations had been conducted in the area. He said: "It can be very difficult to get to the bottom of these things sometimes, but if a lot of people saw these lights there is probably a rational explanation."

Last year, the Government opened its records over UFO sightings for the first time, containing eyewitness reports from across Edinburgh and the surrounding regions. Sightings included a series of flashing lights over Corstorphine Hill in 1998.

Investigators said at the time they were puzzled by the lights and urged more witnesses to come forward, but the mystery was never solved. Other incidents, such as two "fuzzy white lights" that danced over Leith in 2001 and a "swirly" object appearing above East Linton in 2006, have also never been explained.

At Glastonbury Festival last year, one of the stalls was selling little paper hot air balloons which could be lofted with a "nightlight" candle suspended beneath them. Having seen these drift slowly across the sky down there, the candles light up the balloons and they look very nice. The above description matches pretty well.

My guess is that students have already been at early festivals and picked these up.

Drugs before lunch. Astronomy after dinner.

Sounds very similar to something I saw in September last year. Groups of solid (not flashing) orange lights in 'procession' heading from West to East over what I'd estimate was somewhere over North Edinburgh (their path was North of where I was anyway, which is near the Playhouse). They maintained their formation, all going in the same direction at the same speed. Difficult to estimate how high up they were, but there was no sounds to be heard when I opened the window. I'd just moved into the flat and hadn't put blinds up yet so, in the living room at night these orange lights easily caught my eye out of the window as they appeared beyond rooftop of the building opposite until they were overhead and, from the back window, I could see them off into the distance before they disappeared (the lights got smaller and dimmer so my guess is they were gaining altitude and disappeared into the clouds). I didn't count them, but after it all happened I reckoned I'd seen around a dozen of these lights over the space of probably 2 or 3 minutes. My better half also witnessed them and I noticed a couple out in the street had spotted them too as they'd stopped walking and were pointing at them. Thought there might've been something on the news or the Internet about it the following day, but couldn't find anything. The exact same thing happened almost exactly a month later, but this time I only counted 3 of the lights but, interestingly (or perhaps not) they appeared to be following the path and going around the same speed as the lights I'd seen the month before. I’d say I've never seen anything like it, but what I'd probably compare it to is if you've ever seen news reports from a warzone and the cameraman has captured video of missiles streaking across the sky at night, well, that's what it reminded me of (except at a much slower pace), all you see is the orange light from the flame heading through the sky in a very direct path... but, unless the army is waging a war against the N

I don't have a video camera so could only capture some of it on my regular digital camera and, frankly, the results are hardly what even the most ardent UFO nut would consider conclusive. I've uploaded them to photobucket for anyone who's interested: http://s251.photobucket.com/albums/gg311/gjscott75

Still no story about the wild deer butchered in Craigmillar Country Park, have you been told not to upset the pikeys?

We saw these lights on Saturday night and stopped our car in Niddrie Mains Road. The lights floated up from close to Duddingston, possibly down by the pond and floated up. We counted 7. They are most definitly man-made, unless of course there is an alien colony in Duddingston!

I have also seen a UFO in Liverpool about two months ago. It was a a large white light that at first I thought was a large star. It was located in the sky just beneath the moon and as I stood watching it a cloud moved across the sky which I expected would obscure it but the cloud moved behind it.

I tried to photograph it but with full zoom I was not able to focus properly and the picture I took was blurred, then heavy low cloud obscured it so I couldn't take any more.

I think the reason they do not make contact is that we are just not ready or advance enough to deal with them. We are pretty lowly evolved creatures who spend our days killing each other and watching millions starve to death in world of plenty. You only have to read some of the comments here to how narrow minded most us are.

Well thanks for that, it would appear that this is indeed a hoax although I don't know. It is simply a video of people lighing lanterns. It doesn't necessarily prove that UFO's don't exist or that what I saw was a floating lantern.

From my point of view I don't know, as I have not travelled in a UFO or met beings from other planets. But I am open minded and don't want to believe anything, I want to be a knower. The only way that the seemingly impossible can become possible is if in the first instance you have an open mind.

You don't and so for you everything is already known and therefore there can be nothing new. That seems to be a rather dull view of life. You don't know, you simply believe that UFO's don't exist. How can we take your point of view as fact? Your as bad as those people who believe that UFO's do exist.

For long science believed in nothingness, in other words, that the space beteen object was empty. Now their calculations reveal that this is not the case. They have a theory of dark energy and dark matter. They don't know what it is but that it is. It is a theory that UFO's are made out of that substance (dark energy and dark matter). And if dark energy and dark matter exist, whats to say that more substance beyond that doesn't exist. The whole cosmos is energy, science largely only accepts three fields of energy, solid matter, liquid and gas. When and if dark energy and dark matter are proven we will have two additional fields of energy that we live in. This opens all manner of possibilities if we learn how to manipulate and construct items in those fields.

That life coulld exist on other planets and that it could exists in those fields of energy beyond what we see and know of opens the possibility of UFO's and could lead to an explanation of other unexplained phenomenon.

Brian tells us: "The only way that the seemingly impossible can become possible is if in the first instance you have an open mind."

As the man said, if you keep an open mind, folks will pour all sorts of rubbish into it.

OK, so how would you be able to *see* them?

Well, I think that your comments are s little condescending to think I am not familiar with Occams Razor or that my approach is not scientific. regardless I am not offended by your comments.

True creativity which leads to the new requires a bold approach and a reoluteness to carry on regardsless of the criticism of others.

Best regards anyway even if I am from Liverpool :-)

Brian Williams,

30. By developing a device that is capable of measuring the substance in those fields of energy.

At the moment we have no such device and are considerably a long way a way from having one. It will take a breakthrough in our knowledge which will lead to what we will consider to be *magic technology* by the viewpoint that we today.

That other beings on other planets possibly in other universes could already have such technology is not beyond the realms of possibility.

30. Sorry I reread your comment an I see that I have not answered question fully.

I would imagine that these beings could have the technology to alter the state of matter that could make them (their craft) appear solid and visible in the fields of energy that we can see.

26

Brian Williams,

Liverpool 15/04/2008 18:23:35
37. Indeed :-)

Science is growing human organs from light, this would indicate that it is possible to convert energy from state to another.

And I seem to recall that Nicolai Tessler believed that he could extract electricty from the atmosphere. Alas we do not have scientists of his stature working in the world today. And even if such people of vision do exist they would doubtless be excluded from work by those narrow minded rationalist that run science like a dogmatic religion.

#20 Honest Opinion

"Where's the statement from the observatoty on Blackford Hill? (I assume it is still in operation)"

Good question #20, it is still in operation but is no longer used to actually 'observe' from. Modern astronomers observe via satellite links to telescopes situated in Hawaii, Chile, etc. The results of their observations are analysed and processed at Blackford Hill, Cambridge, etc.

As a matter of interest, the current enlightened UK Government is keen to close down/severely reduce staff in such places as the ROE, Jodrell Bank, etc.

I had the honour to work at the ROE (Blackford Hill) throughout the 1960's, but sorry guys I have never seen a UFO yet (that is of course because they don't exist, something like useful politicians).

I saw a UFO while on night duty on a RAF base on the Isle of Man in 1958. It was a very bright revolving light that remained stationary for over 2 hours. Our CO
called up a Hunter from RAF Valley but the object was out of the Hunter's range. By the end of the night several hundred RAF personnel witnessed the object as well as many more civilians. After a couple of hours it suddenly shot off towards the Atlantic and we were left scratching our heads in amazement at what we had seen. Several similar sighting were reported in that era but were kept hush-hush. I'm still open minded where UFO's are concerned.

I saw these orange glowing balls also.I live off St.Leonards Sreet and these things started rising from behind the rooftops opposite which would be the Craigmillar area at around 8.40pm. First there were 2 then more follwed until I counted about 20! They did all follow the same path apart from two of them. They stopped and stayed stationery for about 2 minutes while the others passed them by.They then just seemed to disappear. I cant imagine flares or lanterns or planes or anything for that matter being able to stop dead in the sky like that!My partner and I sat puzzled. When I told someone at work about what I'd seen and they thought I'd lost the plot so I'm glad I wasn't the only one to have seen these things. And the strongest thing I'd had to drink that night was coffee!

I was walking from Causewayside to Cameron Toll. I saw the lights South from Mayfield. When I got to Dalkeith Road they were to the left. This was around 9.00 pm. They looked like ba big string of fairy lights in the sky. I hadn't had any drink or drugs and the person I was walking with saw them too.

Why do people say that UFO's don't exist? If something flies and we dont know what it is then it's a UFO.An Unidentified Flying Object. So that means they do exist.A UFO doesn't always mean a spaceship it just means we dont know what the bloody hell it is!
35

Looks like we have enough sightings to place the point of launch of the flying lanterns somewhere on the south side of Arthur's Seat - making it very likely Pollock students are our "aliens". No doubt they're having a great chuckle about it.

Butterfly41: things in the sky look stationary when they're moving directly away from you. Most likely what happened was that two lanterns had leaks and their climb rate dropped enabling better sealed lanterns to overtake them.

havana: "Fairy lights in the sky" - spot on!

Do you believe aliens were sussing out Morningside in the skies on Saturday night?
Yes, we’re not alone in the universe. Let’s welcome them
Yes, but they’d better not park in a permit zone
No chance, if there was life out there, we’d know by now
