FREE parking spaces will be created on council-owned land along the trams route in a bid to help ailing traders, under plans being considered by city leaders.
Officials are considering the temporary move for land at the former Leith tram garage and Leith Water World – both off Leith Walk near Manderston Street – as well as the old Royal High School on Regent Road.

The initiative is aimed at boosting t
he flagging fortunes of businesses along Leith Walk, many of which say they are losing thousands of pounds of trade due to the disruption.

It is not known at this stage how many spaces can be created under the scheme, but officials have said proper signposting would be put in place to direct drivers to the temporary parking spaces.

The move has today been welcomed by business leaders and opposition politicians.

Gordon Burgess, a spokesman for the newly-formed Leith Walk and Constitution Street Traders Association, said: "I think anything that improves the parking situation on Leith Walk will be welcomed by the businesses down here.

"It will not benefit everyone of course, but at least it is something the council can do in the short term to help."

In July, Leith Walk will be made a one-way street as part of the latest round of trams roadworks.

The temporary move means traffic will be able to travel southbound on Leith Walk, but northbound vehicles will be diverted on to Easter Road.

The road needs to be reduced to one side because engineers need to work on moving utility services that cross the road rather than travel vertically. It is thought the works will last around three weeks.

Leith Walk councillor Angela Blacklock said: "It's a good idea and something the council can do, hopefully relatively quickly, which won't cost a lot of money.

"I don't think the shops particularly want handouts from the council and practical measures like this might have a bigger impact.

"There is no doubt that businesses on Leith Walk and the surrounding streets are suffering, so anything we can do to help has to be welcomed."

Council officials have also instructed the city's parking contractor, NCP Services, to pay particular attention to Elm Row, ahead of works at the London Road junction.

A four-month project to divert utilities at the London Road/Leith Walk roundabout gets under way on June 2.

The work involves lane reductions on southbound Leith Walk traffic, while a contraflow will be in place for northbound traffic.

The Blenheim Place and Elm Row junctions with London Road will be closed, as will the Montgomery Street Junction with Leith Walk.

City leader Jenny Dawe said: "We have moved some way to addressing the issues in Leith Walk. We do, though, still have some challenges facing us."

Is this coming from the tram budget or are we subsidising the tram again? If these spaces can be used for this , why not full time?

Bet they only make them free from 8pm to 6am and charge big bucks the rest of the time.

It better not be coming from my budget or they'll be trouble.

I've got a spare roll of tape that the council can have to stick their half-baked, ill conceived giggle of a project together.
The specialist ahesive application operative will cost a bit though.

Blenheim Place and Elm Row junctions with London Road will be closed, as will the Montgomery Street Junction with Leith Walk.

Now does this mean that there wil be NO buses going along London Road at this Junction?

TIE website isn't very clear (so whats new I hear someone saying)

Bonkers - the madness continues! Remember - this is work still related to the utilities - wait until the road gets actually gets dug up and the tracks laid - around 2017 at my guess! Preferably never!

No doubt Willie Gallagher of TIE is spouting that this is good for Edinburgh and good news to be welcomed by the city's residents and businesses. What planet is that man on!

I thought the council 'managed' our land rather than 'own it'. Pity they have flogged off so much common good over the years or we could all find somewhere to park while we shop in the city centre.

So now we are paying AGAIN to park to pay AGAIN for a tram line that NOBODY IN EDINBURGH WANTS.

For anyone who wants to know what TIE are planning for the area of the London Road roundabout/Picardy Place, TIE are running two "surgeries" TODAY, in the Hall of St Mary's RC Cathedral (access from Little King Street), Session 1 from 1.30-3.00, and Session 2 from 6.00-7.30. Apparently project staff will be available to "discuss the plans, discuss any special needs and answer any questions".

Wheeee... I just LOVE how the moaning whiners manage to turn absolutely every story about trams into something negative! Free Parking!!! Got to be good, no? No, of course not. Moan moan moan. Pathetic, the lot of you.

Jenny MacArthur,

Oh, by the way -- 8. Annoyingboi -- I want them. So I've just disproved your idiot claim that NOBODY does. Even shouting your silly opinions in block capitals doesn't make them any more true, you know.

Jenny - be good to hear why you support the trams? I assumed you lived in the Morningside area, as a resident, long term mental patient in the Astley Ainslie, but the forum is yours to convince us otherwise.
13

The Judge,

22/05/2008 13:57:01
Jenny it isn't "free parking" but you knew that didn't you? You can smell the desperation from TIE & ECC offices they know the tramLINE is going to be well over budget and they will try everything to convince us otherwise. Last week it was "free business rates", this week its "free parking" next week it'll be "free bus travel" or such like.

The project has failure written all over it, but you knew that too didn't you Jenny?

Prior to work starting TIE are supposed to have carried out detailed planning wide ranging consultations, communicating all info to the public.

Now we get told they are closing roads etc for 5 months or 7 months etc, one way systems are going to be put in place statues are being moved diversions, free parking, business rates reduced then reduced again, compensation packages increased etc, etc etc, etc. but still Jenny McArthur keeps her head up her backside insisting this will be a great thing for Edinburgh. It is fast becoming a shambles which will soon replace the monument on Carlton Hill as Edinburghs folly.

The tram is coming whatever. All I hope now is everybody (not counting Jenny MacArthur) sticks to their guns does not use it.

Jenny,

I hope you are in favour of Nuclear power cause that is what is going to be required to supply enough to keep this white elephant running.
The only good thing that I expect to see out of this is vastly improved road surfaces where the tram wander on to the main road surface.
Trams need very smooth surfaces to operate.

What a pathetically small minded comment. A major and progressive piece of transport infrastructure is being implemented into your city and you are going to refuse to use it? Why? Because you think it will cost too much money etc.

The last time i checked public money should be spend on the public good and this is the case here.

#20 - I won't use it not for any notions of misplaced pride, but coz like 92% of the population of Edinburgh it does not go where I live or need to go.

And this money is not being spent on the public good. It is wasteful, unnecessary, expenditure to flatter the vanity of councillors and keep the incompetent at TIE in jobs. The business plan is an absolute joke.

23

Euan,

Edinburgh 22/05/2008 17:30:55
It appears that TIE and the Council will stop at nothing to try and hoodwink the people of Edinburgh into thinking that the construction of this tram LINE is actually worthwhile and a good thing.

The people of this City are far smarter than these muppets think and we can all see through their almost daily barrage of poorly-deployed decoy tactics.

This farcical project will NEVER, EVER come in on time and on budget and as far as I'm concerned there is only one way forward - and that is to SCRAP THE TRAM PROJECT NOW.

A failure to do this will result in this diabolical, idiotic project fast becoming Scotland's national disgrace.

Great news for anyone who works within walking distance of these car parks. Free parking all day.

Bet it hasn't been thought through, as usual.

(Will that do, Mario ?)

Ever tried shopping in Edinburgh in 30 minutes ?
27

rs,

..in the hole 22/05/2008 22:31:00
30mins...surprised it takes that long to shop in Edinburgh City Centre shops given the lack of decent shops.

Was at the west end the other evening, it was like the Mary Celeste.

And now the answer to why it is taking so long to move the utilities at the west end.

Heres how its done - 2 men required

1) One Man Supervising (well standing about doing nothing)
2) Man in hole with shovel
3) Man in hole digs up some stones
4) throws them up onto side of hole
5) Some stones fall back into hole.
6) repeat 3-5

result it takes twice as long to dig the hole.

The accent gave it away.

If I hadn't seen this with my own eyes, I would have thought someone was winding me Up if they had told me this story

Does this mean we will be allowed to park in Princes St gardens, its near the tram route and shops and owned by the cooncil...
