WITH Tim Burgess orchestrating the crowd, You Cross My Path kicking in behind him and strobe lights pulsing, it was hard to believe that the Charlatan's are now knocking on for twenty years old as they took to the stage at Edinburgh's Picture House on Saturday.
Back on tour to promote the release of their new album, this was a chance for the bands faithful – and there were many present – to relive the hits while sampling a taster of some hopefully new classics. With oldies such as Then receiving increasingl
y exuberant welcomes from the crowd, the cautious response to new single MisTakes, complete with its fantastic guitar intro, proved that there's still some way to go before it becomes a real favourite.
Bathed in reds, greens and blues, the band ripped through the back catalogue with ease.
By the time One to Another crashed into existence, Burgess continuing to stalk the stage while again waving to various sections of the room, the crowd were as one in their enjoyment.
With the odd plastic cup full of lager being launched into the air, both alcohol and sweat were dripping from many fans, while a handful were dancing on the tables at the side to get themselves a better view of the stage.
With the next roll call of songs, from You're So Pretty, We're So Pretty to This Is the End and a rousing performance of How High, the Charlatans confirmed their status as a group able to embrace past glories with style while laying the foundations for future success with strong new material.
