THE first Roman tombstone to be found in Scotland since 1834 was one of the highlights of the annual report into treasure trove in Scotland presented to Parliament yesterday.
The tombstone features in the third annual report of the Queen's and Lord Treasurer's Remembrancer (QLTR) and is described as the most important Roman discovery in the country since the Cramond Lioness. It was unearthed at Carberry, near Inveresk, East Lothian, in October last year by amateur archaeologist Larney Cavanagh, 34, from Whitecraig.
The red sandstone tombstone was for a Roman called Crescens. Dating between 140 and 180 AD, the tombstone features the image of a naked barbarian, apparently dead.
