POLICE officers calling at an Edinburgh flat immediately became aware of a strong smell of cannabis, a court heard.
Looking into the living room, they could see cannabis plants growing in pots on the table.

A search of the house uncovered more plants and equipment for growing the drug in every room in the house, including the bathroom.

The flat's occupant, 20-year old Walter Simonini admitted growing the plants and said he was "very enthusiastic about the subject".

At Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday, Simonini of Craigour Drive, pleaded guilty to growing the drug in his flat on February 27 this year.

Fiscal Depute, Siobhan Monks, told Sheriff Elizabeth Jarvie QC that the police had gone to the flat "on another matter". They found two large bags of herbal matter and four smaller bags.

Sheriff Jarvie deferred sentence for background reports and also to obtain the estimated value of the herbal cannabis and whether the buds on the plants were at the stage of being marketed.
