SCOTS music lovers are to picket the Scottish Parliament in protest at the withdrawal of their funding.
Supporters of the Scots Music Group will gather outside Holyrood with their instruments on September 4 to raise awareness of the funding axe by the Scottish Arts Council.

They say that the loss of their annual £60,000 grant – which makes up a third of the volunteer group's overall budget – will strike a terrible blow to Scottish music.

Last year, it was recognised as Community Project of the Year at the Scots Traditional Music Awards.

The group's Alastair Cameron said: "If Scotland doesn't support our own culture, it will struggle to survive. The governments in Ireland, Denmark, Hungary and other countries all put resources into nurturing their own traditions. You'd expect Scotland, especially under an SNP administration, to do the same."

Councillor Paul Godzik, whose motion for the city council to support the group's campaign was defeated in June, said: "It's extremely unfortunate that the SMG continue to find themselves in this position. They're an award-winning organisation and one would hope that the SNP government could be supporting groups like this."

It was the Scottish Arts Council which cut the funding. Shouldn't the SMG be picketing the SAC?

couldn't agree more with #1 and #2

would be interesting to know at what level within Scotsman Towers the decsion was taken to turn a routine funding-body-faces-criticism story into an Anti-SNP headline?

The government here is not perfect (no government ever could be, anywhere) but seriously, if you'er a journo and you're going to attack the government, at least find a reason to do so.

Otherwise, your readership just shake their head at you, the journo, as we're not quite that thick (most of us). Would not surprise me if this was a "corporate" decision from on high....yaaaaawn.... here's hoping the current owners (who are more used to writing a local rag in a provincial setting like Plymouth or suchlike) find a willing buyer and get out soon. Stuff like this is ill-becoming of any newspaper group that wishes to be taken seriously, and it's sad to watch the demise in real time, before our very eyes.

And who cut the SAC budget in the first place? What unbelievable morons 1.2 and 3 are not fit to call yourselves Scots when you spit on your own culture.
