DETECTIVES investigating the brutal mugging of an elderly woman in a city underpass today took the unusual step of releasing a CCTV image of a man they are hunting over the attack.
The 77-year-old victim suffered a broken pelvis and elbow after being robbed in Calder Road, Sighthill, earlier this month.

Police negotiated with the Crown Office for permission to release the image of the man captured entering the underpass moments before.

They would only say they are seeking to trace him in "connection with their inquiries".

The man, in his late teens or early 20s, is seen strolling into the underpass, which has become a notorious mugging hotspot, at 3.15pm on Saturday, June 7. Shortly after the elderly victim was knocked down as she had her handbag stolen and the attacker fled down Sighthill Wynd.

Temporary Detective Inspector Alistair Hutchens, from CID at Corstorphine police station, is leading the inquiry. He said: "It would be very likely that someone who knows this person could identify him.

"The victim suffered terrible injuries. This happened in broad daylight at 3.15pm in the afternoon and, if this crime could be worse, the lady who was attacked was elderly and vulnerable."

The release of CCTV images during inquiries is commonplace in England in connection with serious incidents but is far more unusual north of the Border. The inquiry team circulated the images around officers in the city but they were unable to identify him. Temp DI Hutchens said: "I would say to anyone who knows this man to come forward to police."

The incident was the sixth mugging in one of the four Calder Road underpasses in four months.

In the moments after the attack, a woman heard the elderly woman's screams and called an ambulance. The victim was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

A man who walked through the underpass after the incident followed in the direction of the suspect, found him discarding items from the bag in Sighthill Wynd with another two men. Most of the contents of the bag were recovered, minus cash.

In April, a gang of muggers held a knife to the throat of a 28-year-old pregnant mother in front of her two young children in a robbery at the underpass between Calder Road and Longstone Road.

The underpasses under Calder Road include those to Sighthill Shopping Centre, Broomhouse Road and Wester Hailes Road, leading to Stevenson College.

Anyone with information should contact police on 0131-311 3131 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

I really hope that they find the person responsible, but i also hope that this does not backfire on the police and the guy in the pic (who may be innocent) gets a doin.

*2 He also might be guilty.I'll wager there is a good chance that the victim may have given police a good description of her attacker and perhaps after looking at the cctv images that description matched the person we see.

But he may also be innocent. And we are in the UK,so at this time he is innocent until proven otherwise. No one wants to see vigilante action on the basis on newspaper photos.

#4 The birch, borstal and national service were around at the time of the Krays. They got all three.

Too simplistic.

#6 So as a good citizen you'll be encouraging your mate to come forward or raising it to the Polis that you can vouch for him or did you not read that far down?

#2 - No one is saying this person is guilty of anything. The police simply want to speak to him in connection with a serious, violent public incident. He may unknowingly hold crucial information relating to this. You shouldn't jump to any conclusions or speculate about a person's guilt or innocence. That is the job of the police, who have a duty to act in the public interest.

#6 Perhaps the police should get in touch with you so that he can be located and interviewed.

I can't believe it!! all these muggings in the same area & there was no plainclothes officers assigned too these areas? The NYPD would have put Female officers as bait walking through all the tunnels with "Plenty" of backup a short distance away. These "Punks" would have been caught long ago!! But I guess the Police in Edinburgh are too busy drinking their Morning, afternoon & evening "TEA" & eating their "Crumpets"

I am fully aware that he is not being accused of guilt over this crime, but this has not stopped people getting a kicking in the past. I am not jumping to any conclusions, as none of my responses state that this person is guilty/innocent. All i am saying is that i hope this does not lead to vigilante action against the person pictured, because as you say, punishment is a matter for the courts.

#6,

Suggest you call the police...before the EEN give out your IP address to them.

Incidentally, how do you know he's innocent?

#10 and #14 - Don't waste your time responding to attention-seeking schoolkids.

If the guy in the photo was innocent, why was he seen discarding the items from the bag?

Hopefully, he will be made to suffer for every penny that he stole when he's banged up!

Typical mentality of the Edinburgh public, hang now, ask later! I know the pictured individual and I know the torment he's going through for a disgusting crime of which he did not commit!
Grow up Edinburgh and stop believing everything this sh*tty paper prints!!!

Finbarr Saunders,

#16 - Number1 - Instead of suffering any more "torment", the individual in question should just hand himself in to the nearest police station and clear his name.

I'm sure there's a perfectly valid reason why he was caught on CCTV going into the subway at the time of the mugging and why he was followed and seen discarding the empty purse shortly afterwards!
