Published Date: 25 July 2008
GORDON Brown today faced calls for an early general election after the Scottish National Party staged a massive political upset by winning one of Labour's safest seats in Scotland.
In a devastating blow for the Prime Minister, the SNP won the Glasgow East by-election with a 22 per cent swing. Nationalist candidate John Mason overturned Labour's 13,507 majority to win the seat by 365 votes.

The result – announced just after 2.20am following a recount – will spark panic among Labour MPs and cast fresh doubt over the Prime Minister's future.

SNP leader Alex Salmond said the result was a judgement on the relative performances of the Scottish and UK governments.

And Tory leader David Cameron urged Mr Brown to call an early general election.

He said: "I think the Prime Minister should have his holiday but then I think we need an election.

"I think we need change in this country, and that's how change should come about."

Last night's result comes just two months after Labour lost Crewe & Nantwich to the Tories in another by-election disaster.

Glasgow East had been Labour's third safest seat in Scotland, and 25th safest in the UK.

The turn-out was 42 per cent – much higher than expected and only slightly down on the 48 per cent figure for the general election.

Election guru Professor John Curtice of Strathclyde University said a similar 22 per cent swing at a general election would give the SNP 50 out of Scotland's 59 Westminster seats and leave Labour with only one MP in Scotland – Tom Clarke in Coatbridge.

Even Gordon Brown would lose his own seat in Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath.

Mr Salmond – who had predicted a political earthquake at the start of the Glasgow East campaign – insisted he did not believe Mr Brown would quit as a result.

He said: "I don't think we will see an immediate exit for Gordon Brown from Downing Street. I think it is more likely he will change policy rather than change himself.

"The policy that needs to be changed is on the economy. We need a plan for recovery, we need a plan to stave off recession.

"We need action taken to ease the pressure on household budgets in Glasgow East and across Scotland."

Mr Brown and his Cabinet colleagues have repeatedly insisted losing Glasgow East would not force him to step down.

But the result is bound to fuel discontent among backbenchers over his poor personal poll ratings and presentation skills, as well as decisions such as the 10p tax row and vehicle excise duty. Mr Brown was facing Labour's policy forum in Warwick today with recriminations in full swing. The defeat will also overshadow his talks with US presidential candidate Barack Obama tomorrow.

Lothians Labour MSP George Foulkes blamed the economic situation for Labour's defeat.

He said: "People have been concerned about rising prices – that's been the story for weeks now – and although it's a worldwide phenomenon, in each country the national government gets blamed for it."

But he said it would be "absolutely crazy" for Labour to seek to replace Gordon Brown.

Mr Foulkes said: "There is no likelihood of a challenge to his leadership. Anyone who even suggests it is out of their mind.

"We've got to stick by him. He is the right leader. Blaming him is like blaming him because the weather is bad."

Mr Foulkes insisted Labour had recovered from worse setbacks before. But he added: "We are going to have to face Alex Salmond with an even broader grin."

Labour's Scottish Secretary Des Browne said the Government's measures on the economy so far had not been enough. "We do need to listen," he said.

"And we need to do more of the sorts of things that we've been doing to respond to people to make them feel that there is a sense of fairness about the way in which we are dealing with the challenges that they are facing day to day."

He added: "People do not think that the steps we are taking at the moment are adequately responding to the circumstances they feel.

"We need to build on what we have been doing but we also need to hold our nerve and hold the course on the longer-term issues."

In his victory speech, Mr Mason said: "Three weeks ago the SNP predicted a political earthquake. This SNP victory is not just a political earthquake, it is off the Richter scale. It is an epic win, and the tremors are being felt all the way to Downing Street."

He said the "dead hand" of Labour control was being removed from Scotland.

"Labour MPs across Scotland will be quaking in their boots," Mr Mason added. "The East End has sent a powerful message – a message that is right now resonating in Downing Street."

Defeated Labour candidate Margaret Curran said: "I do believe the Labour Party has to listen and has to hear the message from the people of Glasgow East.

"I'm in politics because I'm driven to tackle poverty, inequality and to liberate the people of Scotland and Great Britain from those great injustices and my commitment remains as strong as ever."

And Ms Curran, who is already MSP for part of the area, added: "While I regret losing this election and I understand that loss, I do not regret standing. Because for me fundamentally, Labour is a cause and not a career – and it is a cause I will continue to pursue."

SNP deputy leader Nicola Sturgeon said the result was a "catastrophe" for Gordon Brown. "It's a seismic shift in Scottish politics."

She said Glasgow East was the first by-election which was a contest between two governments – Alex Salmond's in Holyrood and Gordon Brown's in Westminster.

"The London government is deeply unpopular, but this is a massive vote of confidence in the SNP's Holyrood government."

The Tories leapfrogged the Lib Dems to come third in the by-election. Tory Shadow Scottish Secretary David Mundell said: "We have to look at the vote in a UK context, not just a Scottish one. It's devastating for Gordon Brown and Labour and shows that they are now seriously on the slide."

Acting Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Michael Moore said: "The people of Glasgow East have delivered a crushing vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister and his Labour Government in Westminster."

after a knockout most people would be on the deck. Either this is a nonsense headline or Gordon's the living dead.

Mr Swanson,

I will be interested to see your opinion piece about this victory for the SNP.

No doubt full of excuses for Labour (global economic climate, giving a kicking to the government, poor campaign).

Face it, Labour is a lost cause just now.

This result has nothing to do with the tories, they are more irrelevant in Scotland than broon's shower so should keep out of it.

It was a win for the SNP and their performance over the last year, and come the general election have the potential to win every labour seat.

The last party we want in charge of the country is the SNP. Salmond wouldn't know the truth if it hit him in the face. He promised to increase police numbers - LIE - numbers have decreased. He promised to wipe out student debt - LIE - he backed down on that one. He has promised to reduce class sizes - LIE - schools are closing resulting in pupils moving to other schools, increasing class sizes. He promised to scrap the tram project - LIE - it is going ahead. He promised to scrap the council tax - LIE - I am still paying it. The tourists are now avoiding Scotland like the plague - tourists numbers have fallen since Salmond and co took charge of the country. He has thrown the Forth Bridge toll collectors on the scrap heap. Then accepts a very large donation from Scotland's biggest homophobe. Salmond is nothing but a complete failure - roll on the next election.

The headline could be more generously interpreted. Strictly speaking the "knockout" was delivered to Labour not Brown; the PM could be indirectly "on the ropes".

It's a stretch, I know, but I'm in a charitable mood today.

I wonder how many seats Labour are prepared to lose with that tack?

:::The last party we want in charge of the country is the SNP. Salmond wouldn't know the truth if it hit him in the face.

Unlike Labour? Why do you think everyone calls them LIEbour?

:::He promised to increase police numbers - LIE - numbers have decreased.

Cite that lie!!! Just because you're a Tory doesn't make it true!!!

:::He promised to wipe out student debt - LIE - he backed down on that one.

Again, you're lying...

:::He has promised to reduce class sizes - LIE - schools are closing resulting in pupils moving to other schools, increasing class sizes.

More lies!! You're not doing very well, are you?

:::He promised to scrap the tram project - LIE - it is going ahead.

That's true, but the SNP were outvoted by the unionists in the SP! Blame Labour for the trams, not the SNP!!

He promised to scrap the council tax - LIE - I am still paying it.

Yep, you're still paying it and you'll be paying even less next year!! LIT will come in when the proposal goes through parliament!

:::The tourists are now avoiding Scotland like the plague - tourists numbers have fallen since Salmond and co took charge of the country.

You really are a class A1 liar, aren't you? Either that or you're on day release from the Royal ED. Which one is it?

:::He has thrown the Forth Bridge toll collectors on the scrap heap.

And how many toll collectors have been made redundant? Pray tell?

:::Then accepts a very large donation from Scotland's biggest homophobe. Salmond is nothing but a complete failure - roll on the next election.

Good grief, you really are an idiot, living in your own wee world! Did you write up all this yourself or did you get help from Baron von Fooked?

Anyone getting sick of hearing 'media tarined' politicians repeat themselves and say nothing at all. Example, Gordon Brown saying he will be "getting on with the job". What does that mean exactly? Better still, Des Browne saying "We do need to listen," "And we need to do more of the sorts of things that we've been doing"...Wha??? Brilliant analysis by one of the top spinners! Is that really listening, Des, or just rotating on a spin cycle! By the way, is Des short for Des-peration?! Lastly, Mr Foukes makes me laugh. There are a few really stipd politicians who only need open their mouths to remove all doubt - he is one such politician. Please explain the logic of "We've got to stick by him. He is the right leader. Blaming him is like blaming him because the weather is bad." No, George, that isn't a logical equivalent - maybe in your world. Also, I would add that you are correct Mr Brown is the 'right' leader, just farther right than most of us are willing to put up with! Gotta love Labour Spinning its wheels, but moving no-where! Enjoy your last days in power, because it will be a long time until you see it again!

Calm down, all you arrogant Gnat supremacist bairns.

The voters in Glasgow East saw this as such a vital, watershed election that only two out of every five voters actually bothered to turn out. And even of that minority who voted, two out of every three voters opted for someone other than Alex's message boy. Winning the hearts and minds of a mere sixth of the voters is hardly a ringing endorsement for the Gnats, far less a declaration for Scottish independence.

Sure, Labour are deeply unpopular at present, and voters are making their displeasure felt. We had noticed that. But when you look at last night's derisory Tory vote, plus the almost disappeared Lib Dem vote, what you have is a negative anti-Labour protest rather than a positive endorsement of the Gnats.

Last night was a chance to give Gordy and Labour a kicking and the voters took it. The next Westminster election will be a choice between Labour and letting the Tories back in, which is a whole different game. Scots' voters are not daft. We fully understand how tactical voting works.

King Smug and his apologists keep telling Scots, Goebbels-like, how popular his minority Government is, presumably in the hope that spin becomes accepted fact. But in reality the Gnats in their first year, like the Bowie song, haven't done good things and haven't done bad things, they haven't done anything at all (though admittedly they have done nothing really well). With a single seat majority, they are effectively in office but not in power - just tinkering at the edges, steering a careful course between right and wrong. They won't get away with smoke, mirrors and abandoned Manifesto commitments for a whole four years.

By-elections have been won and lost by bigger swings, and in better times. They are nine day wonders. Another mouthy Gnat at Westminster spouting his anti-English mantras is pretty meaningless in the wider scale of things.

In short, small political earthquake. Not many dead.

Ghengis.. insulting Alex Salmond who demonstrated he was a true leader (unlike Gordon Brown) won't change facts.
The Labour seats that would fall on a swing of 22.54% from Labour to the SNP would be:

1 Ochil and South Perthshire Gordon Banks
2 Dundee West Jim McGovern
3 Kilmarnock and Loudoun Des Browne 9.80
4 Aberdeen North Frank Doran 10.08
5 Edinburgh East Gavin Strang 11.51
6 Stirling Anne Maguire 11.70
7 Edinburgh North and Leith Mark Lazarowicz
8 Linlithgow and East Falkirk Michael Connarty
9 Ayrshire North and Arran Katy Clark
10 Glasgow North Ann McKechin 13.23
11 Aberdeen South Anne Begg 13.40

pardon the spelling but this was lifted from today's New York Times. do not recall seeing this on any of the Scottish papers in such terms. then i do not recall seeing Wendy or hearing from Mr Marshall. i wonder what his parliamentary pension is likely to be? will there be an inquiry into why his constituency office was in another constituency and not Galsgow East.

Marshall felt under pressure and he resigned, indeed, on health grounds.

The details of the allegations have been known for weeks and we can only look to Labour's pals in the Scottish press for the main reason this was kept quiet.

Apparently the story "broke" on Monday even though it had been doing the rounds in Westminster for some time.

Some questions were asked about it on Newsnight for example, and the Mail did an expose on it. But no, nothing from Scotsman Group newspapers, Daily Record, the Sun or the Mirror. Small mention in the Metro.

Essentially, it was very well covered up, or concealed.

i wonder how long it will be before we hear Mrs Curran's dulcet tones taking the paint off the roof of the Hollyrood Chamber and explaining her remarks about "never having visited Marshall's office" despite her being the MSP for the area and having lived in Glasgow East "all her life". it is all going to come out in a great big mess and try as you might you cannot easily put the toothpaste back in the tube.

Ah me, isn't life so simple when you are dim. Everything in the world is Gordon Brown's fault. People in the East End are unhealthy, not because of chips, booze, fags and not working, but because labour never managed to make it all better. Diddums! And now wonderful SNP will bring lots of oil ( till it runs out) and everything will be wonderful in the East End. Next week there will be healthy, slim children drinkking mineral water and eating carrot sticks.
Yeah right!

Being serious for a minute, I worked in Glosgow for years, teaching and other jobs. Slooged for years, kids not turning up for exams because they had a hangover; parents giving me pelters for trying to teach their little darlings to pick up litter " Ah don't want mah wean picking up s**t" But I learned lots too - how to "do the broo" was the most popular course on the hidden curriculum. No political party will fix that in a hurry. And John Mason, however nice a man he is, and I believe he is, won't do much for the price of petrol!

Proceeding from the premiss that ALL politicians are rather sad albeit well-meaning inadequates (i.e. people for whom "ordinary" life is simply not sufficiently exciting - the lust for power & influence obviously being so), all of the above posts & discussions about politics in general need to be understood in some sort of context. This world is deeply flawed. Nothing much ever changes. Some improvements have occurred, but exploitation is as alive & well as ever, although very cleverly disguised. Which Party or Leader runs things is neither here nor there ((witness the tenure of George Bush). It's important to vote, but also important to remember that no party is totally genuine & trustworthy. So vote for whichever basic philosophy appeals to you the most (despite what is written, there is still a significant difference historically & morally between various Parties) & hope for the best. But don't lose any sleep over it. It's only castles burning.

51 - A strange point that we are increasing hearing squealed from Labour quarters "vote for us cos we're not the Tories".

Seriously, is that the inane level the Labour Party has stooped to?

What about having policies, leadership, a movement for change? Nah, not the 21st Century Labour Party - they just want people to vote for them because they are not the Tories.

Tony,roll on the election indeed!
The time for change in Scotland has arrived and the SNP will succeed in booting out the lying, warmongering hypocritical oafs that are Scottish Labour.
Listen to their squealing,"Its the economy to blame" Well who has been in charge of our economy for the last decade?
People on the streets of Glasgow were asked on tv this evening why they voted out labour, IRAQ was mentioned several times. Face it, labour are sunk.

SNP supporters please note:-

Half the people who vote SNP do not want independence. They're only voting for them as a protest and because they think they're the party at the moment which will best stick up for Scotland.

Face the facts. The SNP are only popular because they have a charismatic leader and Labour are extremely umpopular and, because they are still in their honeymoon period in The Scottish Parliament. Their policy of independence has very little to do with it. Let's wait a couple of years and see what happens.

And as Wendy says, bring it on. Why wait until 2011. Wouldn't have anything to do with David Cameron being in power by then? Hopefully the voters will see through the cynicism of the referendum timing.

Sorry who is this "Wendy" you talk of? Not another discredited labour member surely?
How do you know what 50% of the SNP's vote wants?
The SNP is popular because they are the party most likely to listen to the Scottish electorate.
Who wants Trident up here? How many people here support the war in Iraq? Just two questions to make any Labour supporter squirm.

Oh and how about asking Brown the clown to "Bring it on" and call an election then?

Turnshie,

OK, it's maybe not 50% but surveys have shown a sizeable proportion of SNP voters against independence. And here's the latest poll in the EEN showing only 36% of all voters in favour:-

But you are right as to why the SNP are popular, and it's got nothing to do with independence.

As for Brown, I agree. He is an illegitimate PM. As for Wendy, I'm no great supporter but "bring it on" was right on the mark. Can you please give me a reason why we are not having an independence referendum now? Or am I right that it's all got to do with waiting for David Cameron to be elected?

I would say that you are probably correct in that the referendum will take place when the conservatives are in power. I can't say that it is a bad thing to delay it till then though because if the referendum was lost just now then we would all rue the day that we blew our chance of escaping from the tories.
It will also give the people of Scotland a chance to see more of what the SNP can do for them.
