Published Date: 12 May 2008
A GANG of scrap metal thieves is believed to be behind the theft of 40 drain covers from the streets of Portobello.
The covers were lifted in the space of four days from Baileyfield Crescent, Fishwives' Causeway, West Telferton Industrial Estate and Seafield Way.

The theft was today branded as dangerous and callous. Each cover is around £100 to replace but costs could rise to £1000, depending on the damage.

Police today said a white van had been seen parked in the area at the time of the thefts. There has been a big rise in the number of drain cover thefts in recent years as the price of metal has increased. The Portobello spree took place between May 2 and 6.

A police spokesman said: "We are appealing for anyone with information on these thefts to come forward. A white van was seen at one of the locations."

Drain cover gangs are known to operate all over the UK, many of whom have specialist equipment which means they can remove the covers in seconds.

Councillor Robert Aldridge, environment leader at the council, said: "I was appalled to hear about the multiple theft of gulley covers in East Edinburgh. This callous and calculated crime could have serious repercussions in terms of public safety.

"In addition, there are substantial cost implications for replacing the stolen covers.

Over the last year high metal prices in Asia have led to an increase in the theft of metal such as iron drain covers and aluminium road signs.

Stealing drain and manhole covers can be classed as interfering with safety equipment, which carries a jail term.

Perhaps the gang could steal some from the city centre where every drain appears to be completely blocked. Least no one will fall down a drain until the council clear it and then fit a new drain cover.

#9 "are you allowed to say fish face?". That would depend on the fish, you wouldn't want to be likened to a trout or a monkfish but Nemo is cute.

specialist equipment? Ive lifted drain covers up by hand when a bank card was dropped down one.

A white van was seen next to a drain on a main road - that should narrow it down.

Where were the police? As usual it would be asking them too much to actually get off their lazy idle backsides and actually patrol the streets and generally do what they are paid for. The simple way to recover the cost of this crime is to take it out of the police budget. Perhaps when the police budget slowly disappears to nothing will the CC realise what a lazy bunch of individuals he employs.
25

Robert12,

12/05/2008 17:21:07
If they were smart they'd get an old transit and cut a hole in the back. Park over the drain and simply lift it into the back.

Surely the police could simply check local scrappies for folk trying to flog drain covers?
