A GANG of scrap metal thieves is believed to be behind the theft of 40 drain covers from the streets of Portobello.
The covers were lifted in the space of four days from Baileyfield Crescent, Fishwives' Causeway, West Telferton Industrial Estate and Seafield Way.
The theft was today branded as dangerous and callous. Each cover is around £100 to replace but costs could rise to £1000, depending on the damage.
Police today said a white van had been seen parked in the area at the time of the thefts. There has been a big rise in the number of drain cover thefts in recent years as the price of metal has increased. The Portobello spree took place between May 2 and 6.
A police spokesman said: "We are appealing for anyone with information on these thefts to come forward. A white van was seen at one of the locations."
Drain cover gangs are known to operate all over the UK, many of whom have specialist equipment which means they can remove the covers in seconds.
Councillor Robert Aldridge, environment leader at the council, said: "I was appalled to hear about the multiple theft of gulley covers in East Edinburgh. This callous and calculated crime could have serious repercussions in terms of public safety.
"In addition, there are substantial cost implications for replacing the stolen covers.
Over the last year high metal prices in Asia have led to an increase in the theft of metal such as iron drain covers and aluminium road signs.
Stealing drain and manhole covers can be classed as interfering with safety equipment, which carries a jail term.
