A SMALL minority of yobs were to blame for the violence which marred the Uefa Cup final in Manchester, police and council chiefs said today.
Hundreds of Rangers fans went on the rampage when a big screen showing the match in the city's Piccadilly Gardens failed to work just before kick-off.

Fifteen officers were injured, as well as a police dog, and 42 arrests were made as hundreds of
riot police and supporters fought running battles.

One fan of Rangers' Russian opponents, Zenit St Petersburg, was stabbed but his injuries were not life-threatening.

The match commander, Assistant Chief Constable Justine Curran, said the response of her officers was "appropriate".

She said: "It was challenging and we were stretched. Our officers did come under a degree of violent attacks. I am happy we responded appropriately. We could not let those minor disturbances affect the day for everybody.

"I am satisfied our reaction was appropriate. I watched the scenes in Piccadilly Gardens from the control room. I saw officers chased down a street by a baying mob of around 200 people. We had to do something."

The screen that failed was one of eight mounted in the city to accommodate more than 100,000 ticketless fans who descended from Glasgow.

Council leader Sir Richard Leese said the screen went blank 15 minutes before the 7.45pm kick-off but had been working throughout the day.

Around 11,000 fans were transported by shuttle bus to an alternative screen set up rapidly at the Velodrome near the City of Manchester of Stadium – but a group of supporters stayed and vented their fury at the police.

A spokesman for First Minister Alex Salmond said today: "Clearly we are very disappointed with the actions of a clear minority of the 100,000-plus fans who travelled to Manchester for the final.

"The vast majority of fans created and enjoyed a carnival atmosphere.

"But sadly the actions of a few have spoilt what was a very positive occasion."

He said the Scottish Government was being updated on the situation.

"Obviously there are issues being raised in terms of technical failures and the number of people in certain areas," he went on.

Scottish Tory deputy leader Murdo Fraser called for an inquiry into last night's events.

"Lessons need to be learned, not least if we are hosting similar events in the future," said Mr Fraser.

A relaxed attitude to fans' drinking in the street – normally outlawed – was adopted as supporters consumed alcohol from breakfast onwards.

Sir Richard added: "Do you really think we were going to stop 100,000-plus Glaswegians wanting to have a drink? It was not possible.

"Trying to enforce that would have created a public order problem."

#1 Selloman. I agree but it was a particularly nasty minority. I just wonder how many of the troublemakers were from Glasgow? Mind you I was just reading some morons on a Hearts fans website say that they would have rioted too if their telly had broken down like the Gers one! Sad really.

The solution is obvious.
Ban Rangers fans from ALL away matches.
A law could be passed entitled,
"The Protection of Civilisation from the Scum of the Earth Act 2008"

Oh well! so after all those stories last year about police brutality in Spain and how the Rangers fans had been attacked by the police for no reason at all, and poor little gers, nobody understand us and the sectarian songs are only happy sing alongs and we are just happy people supporting our team. So what happens now?, will they acuse the english police of brutality too?. Face it, you´ve got some dodgy characters disguised as supporters.

Minority? Was it also a minority who were filling the stadium with the sound of sectarian singing?

There's a page on the BBC containing 6 or 7 different videos, each showing thousands of Rangers fans rioting in Manchester: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7401188.stm.
Read the Manchester Evening News site: "ambulance crews treated hundreds of walking wounded in one of their busiest ever nights": http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/
FACE FACTS.
I can't wait for the corruption scandal to break. I just hope this ugly incident hasn't overshadowed it.

It seems the Rangers FC owe their hosts, Manchester City Council and the citizens of Manchester, a very massive apology and a great thanks for their efforts in having to 'look after the trouble caused by 'a minority' of their supporters, who caused so much trouble after the screening of the match, presumably a freebie, failed to materialise due to technical problems! Especially as much publicity was given about how Rangers fans can behave well!

Obviously this 'minority' no doubt as usual 'tanked up to the eyeballs with alcohol' (where's the fun in that?)
and clearly indicating that really 'Football' is not what it is all about!

One has to wonder if any football alleged ‘fans’ can enjoy / watch a game - without what seems to be an absolute necessity to do so by getting tanked up to the eyeballs with alcohol - says a lot about football of today!

Such appreciation of the hosts efforts to accommodate them, under what must have been severe difficulties - even without the alcohol driven 'bravado and discontent' which displayed brilliantly the mentality of Rangers 'peaceful' supporters that was loudly stated on the 'World Stage' - prior to the match! Although the City of Manchester pleaded 'Do not come if you haven't got a ticket!' - apparently all in vain - as might have been expected, and seemingly the trouble and upset in the host City - as anticipated, not without good cause, so erupted!

Shameful and disgusting behaviour!

Just watched the videos on the BBC site, it is arguable the police may have got what they deserved. There is footage of at least one unprovoked assault by a baton wielding polis.

I wonder why the people who are quick to (rightly) condemn these animals for their hatred and bigotry are also the same people who use insulting and bigoted comments to describe an entire city's inhabitants.

What are we going to do about Glasgow when independence beckons? It's like a foreign country already with its ingrained sectarian problems.

Small minority my @rse - it was a minority but a large minority, we're not talking dozens of thugs; we're talking hundreds. The Police should be in a position to beat these morons to within an inch of their pathetic lives. Being Irish I'm usually a tolerant sort but I've got zero-tolerance for the thuggish Sectarianism that masquerades as football support in this country - and I'm not just singling out rangers 'supporters'. Ban Rangers supporters from all away matches, full-stop.

Ban the team for 1 year from all UEFA competitions and their supporters for 2 years.

That will dish out a resounding warning to every club to get their supporters, or otherwise, in order.

This is even worse than I expected from the biggots.

Andrew Allan,

At the end of the night what had we achieved in Manchester? First of all it was that the Rangers fans are ashamed of their country, known to most of us as Scotland, where was your Scotland flags, I think I saw two and yet there were more Northern Ireland flags than that. The world would have taken them as English fans, and yet I’m not sure they would be too unhappy at that. Secondly, it seems like the joke was on you, some of you planks paid a thousand pounds to watch the world’s most hideously boring football, and I use that term loosely, team, and if there is any justice you will see your so call team losing three more titles, so not to inflict this insult to the Scottish game from going onto next season.

As someone who works for the NHS, I can say that when Rangers loose an Old Firm match the number of assaults rocket compared to when they don't. They have the most angry and violent supporters in the country by far!!

18

Reasoned Debate,

15/05/2008 18:16:02
Cant understand why they rioted in the country they love to sing about !!
Seriously. yes it was a minority, but a bloody large minority. They are a disgrace and have made a big rod for their backs the next time they travel in Europe. As to the singing of sectarian songs, I was watching the clapping and chanting. It was without doubt the majority not the minority who were singing and letting Scottish football down. So glad they lost. Just wish they would find somewhere else to play their "football" and spread their vile sectarian hatred.

It also help a lot when the local supermarkets Tesco for one open an hour early with a range of cut price drink "special offers",what did they think was going to happen, put 200,000 drunks anywhere and you will get trouble,Manchester was totally unprepared.

I was working in Manchester on the day of the match. We have hosted big events before, like the Commonwealth Games, but I've never seen the streets so crowded. I don't think the city was well prepared for so many fans.
There was a carnival atmosphere & most fans were polite & well behaved, but the atmosphere was spoilt by the sectarian chants. Some fans were drinking in the streets, something that isn't usually allowed.(I heard Tesco opened early with cheap booze by the door.)
I realise it must have been really frustrating when the big screen broke but that doesn't excuse the violence.
A final word about the sectarian chants, Glasgow, it will be your turn to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014. I hope you will make all visitors welcome, whatever their religion may be.

Cygnus X-1,

Who can say this came as a surprise?
Anyone who has ever been to match involving this team can testify to an unsavoury undercurrent which seems to be far different to that which comes from playing against anyone else.
I wonder why no-one was blunt enough to warn the manchester authorities and tell them to ban drink and steer clear of giant screens. Pussyfooting around and trying not to upset the gers has landed us exactly where 99% of us knew it would.
These people are not like the rest of us.

This is not rocket science. After the tv screens failed some idiots threw missiles at the screen and the police used heavy handed tactics that escalated into serious disorder. It was stupidity by the police to baton charge a volatile crowd for what was at first a minor incident that you could get at any event or gathering such as a rock concert. If you baton charge a volatile crowd you will get disorder and that`s what happened. This would not have occurred in Scotland as the police have a less heavy handed approach ! This said .... the fans that retaliated should be ashamed !

Aye thats right, it was the minority.

That has been rankgers excuse for decades. And you know what, it is true, the directors of this repulsive organisation probably only number a dozen or so, and they are the true culprits by allowing these in breds to poison scottish football.

Some guy,

Why do people insist on tagging all Rangers fans the same way? When you've got 100,000+ fans in a city and a couple of hundred cause that's only about 0.25% or of fans which in any language is a minority. The fact is the huge majority of rangers fans didn't cause any trouble and despise those that did.
Oh all this stuff about rangers being the bigoted ones and the ones causing all the trouble. In case you hadn't noticed you only ever see Irish flags at parkhead, some of the Aberdeen songs about rangers and the hearts - hibs songs about each other aren't exactly family friendly and in case you forgot Hibs were famed for having some of the most violent "fans" in Britain. The problem exists through the whole of football and is not limited to Rangers.
I'm a Rangers fan, i like sitting down and watching any team play, even celtic when their in Europe and i wish all football fans could just enjoy the game.
