Published Date: 14 October 2008
A FATHER-OF-THREE has died of a suspected heart attack just minutes after trying to break up a fight between neighbours in his street.
Police are investigating after David Naughton, 41, collapsed following the disturbance outside his Moredun home on Friday evening. His devastated wife Donna, 37, today told of how he had gone outside after hearing a disturbance and had tried to act as peacemaker.

She said: "There was a loud disturbance outside between a couple of the neighbours and Davie went outside to see if he could calm things down.

"He was only out there a couple of minutes. When he came back in he looked like he was having a turn and then he just collapsed. I tried to give him CPR until the ambulance arrived but it was no good."

Mr Naughton, a site manager for Stewart Milne Homes, had a heart transplant two years ago to correct a congenital heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy, in which the heart is weakened and enlarged.

The same condition is thought to have killed his father, Owen, 29 years ago when he was just 39.

Mrs Naughton will have to raise the couple's children Calum, seven, and Ava, two, alone. Mr Naughton also has an older son Owen, 23, from a previous relationship.

Mrs Naughton said: "I sent Calum to school yesterday and I only told him when he got home. He knows that daddy had a new heart and I explained to him that the new heart broke. Davie was just a family man through and through. He doted on his children."

Mrs Naughton said her husband had intervened in the past to sort out problems outside their property on Moredunvale View.

She said: "The police gave us an anti-social behaviour diary to keep a track of all the things happening on the street.

"Davie couldn't stand it. He used to wonder why hard-working families had to put up with it."

Neighbour Robert Cairns said: "We live on the street with the neighbours from hell.

"One family allow their flat to be used as a doss house and drinking den for all the kids in the street."

Local councillor Tom Buchanan said: "This is awful news. I shall be straight on to the police and the neighbourhood action units to discover how this was allowed to happen."

Mr Naughton's body was due to undergo a post-mortem examination this morning. Neighbours said he may have been hit with a bottle.

A police spokeswoman said: "Police are keeping an open mind, and inquiries are ongoing to establish if the death is linked to the incident."

I feel really sorry for the family, especially his children. Each time I read this kind of story, I feel really sad.

On behalf of all Hearts supporters I would like to say that our thoughts are with Mrs Naughton and the rest of the family at this very sad time.

2 i agree.

The police dont give a to55 about anti social behaviour! i too had a similar issue with older kids (17+) in my street who whilst playing football kept booting it against my window the seargent who attended the incident said that in order to keep the peace i should maybe try to not annoy them and if i confiscated the ball i could be charged with theft. I have been spat on, threatend and my wife has been verbally abused. I will now bide my time and get them one at a time when there are no witnesses!

The moral is THE LAW IS AN ASS and people should be allowed to take the law into their own hands when protecting their own property.

#3 I'm sorry, I don't agree. If you do that you are no better than they are. I know it is difficult, everyone comes up against awkward situations in their lives, but taking the law into your own hands is not the answer, that path leads to anarchy.

However, I do feel that the laws we do have should be strengthened and enforced.

I, too, send my condolences to Mr Naughton's family in what must be an extremely harrowing time for them.

#4 Complete garbage. Under common law everyone has the right to arrest criminals. Sitting back and watch it happen, is collusion and makes the watcher just as guilty.

My deepest thoughts and sympathy go to the family of David. I was at school with his youngest sister and no one deservces to lose a loved one in this way. If davod was hit by a bottle the little thug should be arrested for Murder.

I knew this guy, it's very very sad. My thoughts are with the family and his lovely wee kids.

Local councillor Tom Buchanan said: "This is awful news. I shall be straight on to the police and the neighbourhood action units to discover how this was allowed to happen.

I can tell you EXACTLY how this happened Tom but what would be the point? Don't you understand YOU are part of the problem so you can never be part of the solution.

Never mind you've got your name in the paper again, it's taken the death of a good family man but you can pretend you're doing something for the 10's of 1000's you pick up in wages & expenses every year.

I wonder how many of Big Ecks 1000 extra police were on the streets of Moredun last night?

This is a total tradgedy, one that should have NEVER happened. Just because of some neighbours from hell my friend, her lovely kids and his whole family's lives have been turned upsidedown. There'll be a lot of angry people today. Davy was a good guy, and managed to come through after having a heart transplant only for some idiots to cut his life shorter than it ever should have been. Love and wishes to Donna and family. No-one should have to put up with these people.

I was soooo sorry to read about this good man's demise, and feel so bad for his family and his children. How needless a thing that was to have to die like that, when the police could have come to break it up if they enforced the law like they are supposed to.

This is so sad to hear. What can one say to the family losing a close one for caring about people who should be locked up.

I do hope they have a guilty conscious and never allowed to forget it.

More so, questions have to be asked why this family from hell are still staying there? I don't care about their human rights - they should lose them. Take their kids into care and evict the adults.

I hope the council do something - how sad it will be reactive decision making when it should have been pro active before this.

We are far too soft.

Thinking of all family members of David.......

You have no idea how much the people of Moredun have been trying to do to get these people out. What do the council do???? They build some really nice brand new houses and move more of them in!

gordon aka smoker and proud,

having lived in that area for years and i know 1st hand what goes on, ie community cop agreeing with me about my window being smashed and stones thrown at it (and not just mine, many others) and his words are or were and i quote, "these kids are virtually bullet proof, our hands are tied we can do nothing" there is a few families that the cops have told me quite openly that they are well known to them and its them that are causing all this hassle and trouble. i say its more than past time to take the streets back, bu**er the law cause its a ass anyway and the judges who are meant to uphold it are living in cloud cuckoo land with not a clue other than ultra left wing les&ian social workers idiotic reports and the pc brigade who say you cant smack a child...smack some of them???? they need a hiding! try sitting on a bus and listening to their vul;gar sex lives ( at he age of about 12!) and their language. ENOUGH¬ lets take the streets back and ban social workers and do gooders who have no brains or live in a protected area!
my utmost and sincere condolences to the family and friends and i can only hope that the f00kwits get what they deserve that caused this terrible tragidy

#4 You Sir, are a 1st class idiot. Obviously you have never had to endure scum hanging about your house night after night creating havoc. And the law is an ass, see what happened to Stephen Armstrong when all he did was try to protect his family. These scum have no rights.

The police have to admit responsibility for this death. The police are not interested in enforcing the law or dishing out physical punishment - like they used to years ago. And guess what - years ago we never had such problems. Any police officer that is reading these comments should hang their head in shame - when will it get through to you clowns that you need to actually work and start arresting the thugs in order to get any respect from the public. In the meantime - police officers - I hope you feel guilty for the mess you have created.

it seems to be that if you are a yob, no gooder, non worker slob you get on better!! You get paid very well, you have immunity from the law, you can treat people how the ell you like, you pay very little council tax, you hardly pay rent, you get handouts of furniture etc etc!!!

Time the tables were turned on them

22

Jingsitsme,

EDINBURGH 14/10/2008 18:37:07
#21 I have shown respect earlier, and still do. Sometimes when people have shown respect are left with their own thoughts about and all have different ways of expressing it. Some may talk about the anti social behaviour and this is not disrespectful - it may turn things in the long run to finally have something done about it.
23

ANON85,

14/10/2008 18:38:19
~ we are not debating over anything. We are all agreeing with each other and giving our opinion about why this has happened. Its anti social behaviour that caused the death of this young man.
24

Disgrunted Ebardonian,

When I was young you had to earn respect not like this disrespectless scum. For years whenever something like this appears in the paper everybody is up in arms, and forgotten about the next day tell me how do the public stand up in force and say that enough is enough how do we get the Council and the police and the dogooders to stand together and report to the people monthly what is happening and what pogress is being made to rectify the situation they are not the only ones with health issues so stop using it as a cope out for the trouble that they are causing if they think they are tough get them into a boot camp and break them down. to take notice I put up with this for 5 years I had to keep a record of each insodent so that when it wen't to court they had 130 % proof have to cope with this it affected by health severely.
25

Disgrunted Ebardonian,

Commiserations to the Naughton family. Your husband and father is worth 100 of this scum I hope that they are proud of what they did to a good honest decent hard working man but I very much doubt it as they have no feelings. and yet they are the ones that get away with it every time.

Why don't the police take the culprits to the post mortem and let them see exactually what it consists off.
26

onetimeonly,

Edinburgh 14/10/2008 20:15:44
My thoughts are with the family. Its such a horrible thing to have happend, and IMO happend to the wrong person.
Everyone who lives in Moredun knows exactly who his responsible for this, it was only a matter time before someone was killed, its just a shame it had to be an innocent man, who only wanted to live at peace with his family.

The council and police have A LOT to answer for, they know what happens in Moredun, yet they are more interested in filling out 'paperwork' and avioding the "red tape" than putting these thugs behind bars. Is it any wonder people take the law into their own hands? You cant even walk down the street anymore without feeling like you have to watch your back...what kind of area is that to live in?

The new resisdents don't seem to bring much to this area either!!!

Judge,

So how exactly did this happen. The article seems to point towards anything between him trying to calm down an argument to having a bottle hit him which was thrown by unruly youths. So tell us, how did this happen?

condolences to Mr Naughtons Family.
Moredun used to be a great place to live; safe and secure.
Times have changed. To many "do gooders"!!
The Kids can just slip through the net, to young to be imprisoned, to old for a slap.
What are the parents of these kids thinking off!!!???
Again my Condolences to the Family

Deepest Sympathy to the Naughton family, I went to Primary and Secondary school with Davie and he was a thoroughly decent individual. The scum who caused this should be caught, locked up and the key thrown away.
31

The Judge,

15/10/2008 08:22:53
#27 This happened because the council refused to do anything about the numerous complaints about an anti social family making life a misery for decent hardworking families.

That family know they are completely untouchable because they've worked the system for several generations. The police and Buchanan can launch as many investigations as the want but we all know nothing will happen. It's a different world now, the scum have all the rights, and by god don't they know how to use/abuse them.

People like Buchanan are too busy building up the job of city councillors with their "grand visions" "arms length companies" and their endless committees, I think they've forgotten why they were elected in the first place.

These little bast@rds that caused this need to be locked up . At the very least its manslughter but if he was hit with a bottle its murder.
They wont give a $hit these scum dint care about other people.
There was an elderly lady in musselburgh got all her windows put thru at 4 in the morning by some feral 15 & 16 yrs old (obvious what kind of family they come from) When the police arrived v quickly she was ina state , she then collapsed in cardiac arrest. Resuscitation by police amb and hosp proved futile. There is no doubt in my mind those little ba$tards killed her by fear.

My deepest condolonces to the Naughton family , what a horrific loss.
