Mixu: give Riordan time

Published Date: 06 September 2008
MIXU PAATELAINEN today warned Hibs fans not to place an unfair burden of expectation on the shoulders of Derek Riordan following his sensational return to Easter Road.
The Hibs boss sparked a frenzy among supporters by snapping up the striker in a £400,000 deal following two unhappy years with Celtic.

As the Evening News revealed yesterday, replica strips bearing Riordan's name and unique number, 01, have been flying off the shelves at the club's shop while ticket and hospitality sales for next Saturday's visit from Dundee United have soared.

But, while delighted with the fans' response to Riordan clinching a three-year deal, Paatelainen cautioned against expecting too much too soon from a player who scored 64 goals in his first spell with the club.

Paatelainen, of course, is convinced the 25-year-old will be just as prolific second-time-around and believes he will quickly get over his period of enforced inactivity at Celtic Park, but he's urging fans to be patient if everything doesn't fall into place for Riordan straightaway. He said: "There is the danger people will anticipate Derek banging in hat-tricks immediately. Of course we hope it all clicks right away, but it might not happen. It might happen right away, it might take a couple of matches or so."

Riordan's return has also led to many believing he'll form a strikeforce with Steven Fletcher, but, with Colin Nish and on-loan French hitman Steve Pinau also vying for places, Paatelainen is content to leave opposition managers to guess as to not only who will be playing, but where.

He said: "Everyone has their favourite team, everyone believes they know how we should play. That's the beauty of football, it's all about opinions.

"These guys all have different attributes which is always good to have. I think we have good cover, good options which means we can not only play different players in different positions but employ different formations and systems.

"However, whoever plays we must make sure we have a strikeforce which scores goals and wins games."

I realise that on other threads I have been less than complimentary about the return of Derek Riordan, my only problem with the player is his 'off-field' activities, this sort of player I would not want to see at Tynecastle. However, if Mixu can sort him out and ban him from the places and people he used to mix with, make him concentrate on his football then he just might fulfil his potential then, and only then, I might be a wee bit jealous.

Don't put too much pressure on his shoulders? Damn right look at the wee weasel a heavy trench coat would squash him.

He is a built like a pube in a tracksuit and unless played with someone with a bit of bulk about him he will be just about as influential upon Hibs league position as he was when he was with hibs the first time round.

Deek will weigh in with a good power of goals this season i reckon... 15 perhaps and next season after he is settled and a proper part of the team I see him breaking the 20 mark but seriously i honestly think the majority of his goals will be earning Hibs draws as Jones, bamba, McNeil and Makalaamby ship them by the hundred weight at the other end.

I think his frustration, at not being able to play football at Celtic may have been to blame for his activities, off the pitch. But i think he will already know, that he has to screw the nut. And i'll tell you something, had he gone to you boys, i would have been gutted.

GGTTH. Come on Scotland.

Interesting, I agree that he will score a lot of goals, i have said that but i stand by my assesment of the state of the rest of the team... just my opinion but i respect yours too.

Jealous of Riordan? LOL Never, i am jealous that we do not have a 15-20 striker yes but not that wee scumbag... dressing room suicide for our team... hope he is not for yours, should be fine as long as he does not leave his wage slip lying on the bench. ;o)

I feel it's something that you lot from gorgay are wishing? Does Darren Fletcher get said the same as Christiano Ronaldo? I very much doubt it.

I have been a fan of Hibs all my life Riordan in my opinion is up there with the very best a natural goal scorer. The fact that he has been lost to the game the last two years is shocking. At least it sends a message to other promising young players that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence.

Ah but the difference is Hibs have knocked back players for the sake of a wage cap in the past and this will no doubt give players the idea that their agents need to renegotiate their terms.

You are talking rubbish mate re Hibs defence. Last season Hibs had the best defensive record outwith the OF and conceded 10 less league goals than Hearts. Already this season Hearts have conceded more league goals than Hibs and I'm sure that will be the case at the end of the season.

Riordan will be able to score goals out of nothing and these will win games that could have ended in draws or draw games that could have been losses. To my mind at the price Hibs paid, for his quality, he will be the bargain of the season and can't wait to see him banging the ball in the net for the Hibs once again.

Oh how Hearts must wish they had a striker of his quality, you spent more on the likes of Nade now that is a waste of money.

Bad goal Scotland lost, great save from Gordon onto the post but the defence stood around like statues.

Well that 3 points lost to a mediocre team. Poor first half, bit more of the ball in the 2nd half without causing any danger in the last 3rd.

Gordon I thought played decent and was surprised Robson was pulled off when he was the best of a poor midfield.

As said earlier why do we pump high balls into the penalty box when we are playing with 2 dwarfs up front.

Methinks Fletcher should be called into the squad for the Iceland match, at would at least give us a true target man.
42

thommo1875,

scotland was very poor today, huffed and puffed all afternoon without creating any real chances, in fact the macedonians created far more goal scoring chances and scotlands man of the match was gordon for me.

Ignoring the above and back to the original story....

Welcome back Deeks. No pressure mate, just weigh in with 15 this season!!!

Seriously though, we should be realistic. This is a boy that the Smellic let rot, who has not had a pre-season and therefore will struglle for fitness for a month or two. Give him time, then BANG!!!!!!

The goals will come.

Good luck Deeks, and heres to you hitting the net regularly.

Been on holidays and came back to see Hibs have not only off loaded a lot of dead wood, however have also landed Deeks. Finally some good news for this season.

I agree that he is a bargain, 400,000. He would have been worth 3 Mil if Hibs had got what he was worth two years ago. Lets hope he can quickly regain that form.

Also happy with Bamba signing, don't know much about his time at Dumfermline, however he played great in the game the Ivory Coast won against Australia at the Olympics.

My faith in Mixu is returning.....

4-3 to Morton, faith definately was wavering!

Mixu talked a lot about wanting to trim the squad and to bring in quality not quantity (which I agreed with). Up until last week he had shown little to achieve this result. He has now produced on that promise. However I'm sure losing Zemmama was not part of his plans.....

As mentioned in other posts, I also give credit to the Board. They have not only forked out the dough to buy Deeks, but would also had to fork out dough to get rid of the dead wood.

No more excuses now, lets get our season properly started and get some results.

Bring some Sunshine on Leith!
