Hearts 1,
Kilmarnock 2.

JIM JEFFERIES pinpointed Hearts' failings in five simple words. "They didn't look like scoring," said the Kilmarnock manager following his side's monumental victory at Tynecastle. His synopsis was worryingly precise and should decree that Csaba Laszlo performs a certain amount of surgery on his team before the Edinburgh derby.
Striking deficiencies are not new this season but with each passing game they become more of a concern. Hearts have lost three of the last four league outings and would arguably have prised something from both Falkirk and Kilmarnock but for the pauci
ty of their attacking. On Saturday they looked bereft of creativity both up front and in certain areas of midfield, rendering them unable to break Kilmarnock's resolute defence despite dominating the second half.

Larry Kingston equalised Mehdi Taouil's exemplary free-kick prior to the interval and Craig Bryson stroked a classy late winner beyond Marian Kello. Bryson's goal was the sucker-punch Jefferies had counted on, a reaction to his own team's shortcomings against Inverness the previous week. Hearts' significant ball possession counted for nothing in terms of points and, consequently, the notion that goals win games will be moving sharply to the forefront of Laszlo's mind.

The Hungarian must shoulder a portion of the blame for his side's recent downturn, although not all. His 4-4-1-1 formation doesn't lend itself to many options in the final third, however certain individuals are no longer justifying their inclusion. A change of tact is essential ahead of the visit to Easter Road. Jamie Mole, whose mistake led to the opening goal, is overdue to be taken out of the firing line for at least a few weeks. Perhaps it's time to see if Ruben Palazuelos' vision and passing ability can be used to initiate attacks from midfield alongside the energetic Michael Stewart. For all Christos Karipidis' reliability, he will always be a defensive thinker and remains primarily a centre-back playing in midfield.

In attack, Mike Tullberg looked usefully industrious on Saturday on his home debut. Either Christian Nade or the hitherto unused teenager, Gary Glen, would be a more useful partner for the Dane than the ineffective Audrius Ksanavcius, but that is reliant upon Laszlo employing a 4-4-2 formation.

The views of the respective managers differed slightly at the weekend, but both recognised that Hearts' badly missed a creative force.

"Maybe a draw was the correct result but we lost the game. It's important to guide this young team in the right direction," said Laszlo. "Before I came here I thought it would not be easy but on Saturday I didn't think we would lose. After we went 1-0 down I had a feeling the team was confident and would come back. They did, with a nice goal, but I am disappointed because in the second half there was only one shot on target. I am a little angry about some situations.

"We are conceding goals from free-kicks and I must think about this. On Saturday, one free-kick and one goal. Against Dundee United, two free-kicks and two goals. If you lose two games directly, the second being at home, everybody is disappointed. I don't like to criticise nobody, it's important to keep this young team together and bring confidence.

"I am disappointed because in the first four or five games the team did what I wanted. Since the Dundee United game the team is beginning to go back to the past and play football that for me is not the best. They fight and run and put balls up front, they don't play football and this is what happened in the first half. We put balls up front and the midifield was out of the game. The second half was more stable because we spoke in the dressing room about this. We came back but it was the same against Dundee United because we did not create chances. Larry Kingston had two big chances but we didn't score.

"Before the end there was no understanding between Michael Stewart and a defender, the ball was in the middle and we got punished. Congratulations to the opponents, they used their chances very coolly."

Jefferies said: "I though Hearts scored against the run of play. They didn't look like scoring, but what they did do was give themselves a lift and for ten or 15 minutes we had to withstand it. We competed and defended well as a team. In the second half, we knew we could get at them and get a winner. If you told me we could come to Tynecastle and the goalkeeper will only have one save to make, which he did at 1-1 from Kingston, I'd have taken that."

On Bryson's winner, he added: "That reminded me of what Colin Cameron used to do for me at Hearts, coming into the box late and showing composure to finish. It was a terrific finish.

"Third place was the carrot for us and we go into the international break after a good result. It's up to the players when they cross the line and I think a few of them got the message that their places might have been in doubt if they continue. Inverness was the only bad result we've had this season and the boys knew they had to improve."

Now the onus is on Laszlo to reinvigorate Hearts before their trip across the city on Sunday week. "You can have speculation about whether this is a good result for us to show we can come back against Hibs. Maybe winning would give more confidence," he said. "I am angry about the way we are losing, we are giving opponents too many chances from our mistakes. We have the ball, make short passes and immediately an opponent is in between us. We don't have 100 per cent concentration and I am angry and disappointed.

"I cannot go out and buy stability. The team must work in training. These were my first words in the dressing room after the game. We made mistakes and the players must learn. If Larry Kingston scores in the second half it's 2-1 or 3-1 for us. But he was through on the goalkeeper and failed.

"I saw the supporters were behind the team in the last five minutes. They know this is a young team and needs supporting."

He is right in that sense, but perhaps Hearts' biggest test won't arrive until January when Laszlo is sure to petition Vladimir Romanov for funds for a goalscorer and/or a creative midfielder.

Captain Christophe Berra was the most assured player amongst home ranks and pointed out that others around him aren't quite giving enough. "The manager does try and install good football in us but it didn't happen in the first half," he said. "Maybe some players think we can just turn up here and win but we've got to earn the right to win at Tynecastle now.

"We have to hold our hands up at the first goal. That's two weeks in a row a guy has put free-kicks right in the top bin and the keeper's got no chance. Leading up to the goal we could have done better. We gave a silly free-kick away.

"In the second half our keeper only had one save to make. I don't think we deserved to lose the game but there would be no better way to get back winning than a victory at Easter Road. We'll work on the positives and the things we can do to hurt Hibs.

'I don't think we deserved to lose the game...'

Sorry Christophe but we did, you guys were hopeless on Saturday.

Plus Tullberg, Nade, Mole, Ksanavicius and Makela look like they couldn't score in a brothel!

It was painfull stuff to watch at the weekend and the ridiculous rounds of head-tennis had me pulling out my hair at times.

Have to say that i thought Tullberg looked usefull and he seems to have a footballing brain but he needs to be paired with a goalscorer in a 4-4-2...GLEN!... for god's sake could we just give the boy a run please?

Audrey was pittifull and I have yet to see a more incosistent player.

Wallace was shaky again and needs to be 'taken out of the firing line' aswell. Young Jason Thomson on the other side had a good game though i thought after a slightly nervous start he was excellent for the whole second half, if i was to have one criticiwsm of him it is that he should be more vocal and shout for the ball more as he was in acres of space on a good few occasions and could have been a usefull outlet if A: someone had bothered to look for a cross field ball or B: If he had just shouted for it, this would have stretched Killie and allowed us to actually get the ball down and pass rather than this frustrating head tennis nonsense which typified Saturday's game.

Tullberg and glen up front in a 4-4-2 for me and thomson to keep his place against hibs but someone needs to come in and take over from Wallace for a little while as he will take the brunt of the Hibs attacks in the derby if Mixu or any hibs coach has watched our games this season as they know he will be nervous and one mistake will destroy the lad's confidence.

We need pace thats for sure!

Driver and Glen would certainly give us that!

#2 - See Hibs played Nish out wide on their right on Saturday so Lee could have his hands full. Miko is playing better but still does not give his full back the kind of cover that Driver can provide so let's hope he's fit enough. Maybe Obua could do a job at LB for us, we just haven't seen enough of him to decide.

Like you I don't agree with Audrey being used and it does make you wonder about Csaba's thinking or indeed if he's being told what to think. On the positive side Larry looked back to his best again and was unlucky not score on a few occasions - now what would a decent striker have made of these chances?

JJ said "We competed and defended well as a team." Aye, the six yellows show exactly how they competed.

If ever there was a time to bring in Glen then it is now. he would give the supporters a bit of a lift with his running and enthusiasm and would mean that teams would have to concentrate more in defence against us.

Driver's injury came at a very bad time for us and it was confounded by Cesny and Obua being crocked at the same time.

I completely agree about Karapidis not playing in midfield as he is always going to be defence minded and this means we just have one less outlet for creative play from a team that already looks as though it wont score more than one goal every two games.

Was anyone else sitting there thinking 'DAMN!' when we brought on Makela at a point where we needed to throw everything at them to get a goal to level the match? Had it been glen sitting in his place on the bench i would have genuinely felt we had a chance to level it but as soon as i saw big juho introduced I just thought... 'We will need to create six chances for him to bury one' and that clearly wasn't going to happen... Not an impact player big Juho!

Actually, both Hearts and Hibs should have drawn at the week-end.

Killie's first goal was taken from a free kick that was awarded well forward of where the incident took place (check the BBC highlights on line for this).

And Hibs were awarded a penalty, and Aberdeen had a man sent off, where the correct decision should have been a free-kick to Aberdeen for offside.

Having said that, I thought the ref was reasonably OK on Sat; everyone makes mistakes, no conspiracy implied.

#5 Karipidis may be a defender but in the first half he was about the only Hearts player who tried to pass the ball rather than hoof it.

No Barry, it's reliant on Laszlo being able to select the team and not simply reading out Romanov's fax on a Saturday morning.

A very diplomatic phrase there from Berra.
I will say what he probably wanted to..Get Zaliclueless, Mikoliuselss, and that plank Ksanavicious back to the Baltic.
Nade,Makela and Mole are brutal, Karipidis is out of position.
There Christoff, I saved you the bother.

big zal and miko are trying hard, they're just not good enough. the wee man is humpty and Mole is a bomb scare.

Karipidis is the least of our worries and I actually rate him in midfield.

Berra on the other hand is quick and assured, as is Kello. He needs support though.

Csaba should bring in Glen and Rapnik pretty soon for mole and wallace (or even Zal). And with Eggert at right back we may just have a team that can put away mid-table fodder like Kili at Tynecastle.

We'll get slaughtered by Hibs if we don't improve drastically.

Karapidis has done reasonably well in midfield but i can't help but feel that a lot of the head-tennis was down to a lack of experience from him in this position and the likes of Ruben would have tried to play it on the deck more... Seriously we just would not get the ball down and the killie players shut us down as soon as we had the ball, I think we need a midfielder who wont panick and will dare to take the ball down and move away from the players closing him down rather than just head it away to the next guy and then watch him do the same... Often badly and straight to the opposition.

I wholeheartedly agree about glen and rapnik and feel that they should have had a run by now when the guys in front of them have been pretty poor, Wallace needs to be taken out of the line of fire before he starts getting Elliot-esq abuse... Same goes for Mole.

As we can see from above, football is all about opinions and we agree on some but others we don't and this is certainly the case with young Jason thomson, i thought he he did well on Saturday and closed his man down and made important tackles when required, my only frustration with him was that he was so often in acres of space while there was a stramash of bodies in the middle of the park and yet he did not shout for someone to spread the play and cross the ball over to him where he would have been able to run with the ball and play threaded ball to the strikers or a one-two with the midfield. This would have tested Killie's ability to close us down more and would have prevented the head-tennis that typified our play. he also played a few nice balls into the box and with better strikers we would have maybe scored a couple. it would be harsh to leave him out for jonsson against hibs I think.

"Hearts need to find goal getter".

This was posted hundreds of times in close season by Hearts supporters.

It still didn't happen.

Therein lies almost the whole problem.

Alright Graham, you should join the Edinburgh derby site that GF created and get NJ and any others to do the same as it is much easier to post and debate without having to wade through the rivers of p15h from the OF fans and muppets like serg'. it is a decent site and the banter is better without the presence of the trolls and weirdos on here... It is perhaps missing a bit of balance though from the more vociferous critics of Vlad.

Bleeding Heart...,

The crux of the problem lies with Romanov's attitude to the team and his misguided policies.

Ultimately it comes down to convincing Romanov that we want him to demonstrate that he has the necessary ambition to make HMFC a winning, successful, club.

That also means convincing Romanov that we, the fans, are ambitious for success.

With due respect gentlemen, we can argue all day about formations, tactics, who are the good/bad players, but the real issue, in my view, is the signing of quality players.

If Romanov can't/won't sign the necesary players, then I think he should start to actively look for a buyer for the club.

Hearts need a buyer I'd say! Vlad's empire has gone t*** up by all accounts!
