CITY leaders have declined a request from Green councillors to sign up to a United Nations climate change agreement.
Green councillor Steve Burgess asked leader Jenny Dawe to sign up to the World Mayors and Local Governments' climate protection agreement, launched at a UN conference in Bali last December.

But Councillor Dawe said: "We are committed to achieving a zero carbon economy by 2050.

"Whilst it does no harm to sign up to agreements on a global scale, these are more beneficial where the objectives and actions extend beyond our existing strategies."

"zero carbon economy by 2050"

What does "zero carbon" mean?

I wasn't aware that Edinburgh council planned to exterminate all life in the city by this date. How will this be done - genocide or population cleansing.

What she really means is is OK to sign up to something that is so far ahead in the fture that they will not be held accountable when it fails to meet the targets because they will not be in post - or even alive.

Doesn't the city want some kind of future? In 20 years time when we are looking back on these kinds of decisions we'll be kicking ourselves.

Do you think it’s right for the council to spend £100,000 on a tree survey?
Yes, urban trees are so important to the quality of life
No, the cash could be spent on better things
Idea’s great, timing terrible given the cuts to services
