VAL TROTTER, 51, is the director of Pebbles Jewellery on Jeffrey Street.
What is your earliest memory of Edinburgh? I moved to Scotland from Liverpool in time to start my first year of high school so my earliest memory of Edinburgh is a trip to the Castle with my school. The view right over Edinburgh was amazing but of
course I had to pretend to be bored to fit in with my new classmates.

What are your memories of school? After a brief spell in Livingston, my schooling was completed at boarding school in South Africa. It was incredibly strict.

Where is your favourite place in Edinburgh and why? I love visiting South Queensferry because it always has a kind of holiday feel to it and there are some excellent restaurants.

What are the best things about Edinburgh? It has to be the beautiful architecture, the green open spaces and the general buzz that there is always something happening.

What would you change about the city? I would somehow magically have the tram system up and running so there wouldn't be all the disruption.

Describe a perfect Edinburgh day/night out. It would begin with a leisurely breakfast at home followed by a day out with my family, either a nice long walk or a visit to the National Museum of Scotland with my grandson. The kids would then go off and do their own thing and my husband and I would meet friends for dinner in one of Edinburgh's fantastic restaurants.

Which sports interest you? I have to confess that I am not actively involved in any sports now. I do like watching F1 motor racing on TV but that's not as good since Michael Schumacher retired.

What was your most embarrassing moment? We had a group of friends at our house for dinner and I had prepared a gorgeous desert with fruit and mascarpone cheese. It was only when I was doing the washing up after everyone had left that I found the greaseproof paper from the mascarpone tub carefully folded in one of the desert bowls. I still don't know which of our guests was the unlucky recipient of the paper.

What is your greatest achievement? A personal one is successfully studying for a degree with The Open University. On a business level I am proud of the fact that my husband and I have opened two shops within 18 months.

Sum up Edinburgh in three words. Beautiful, vibrant and interesting.
