Hearts 1, St Mirren 1

Goals: Hearts - Jonsson 77. St Mirren - Droman 90
A LATE Andy Dorman equaliser denied Hearts victory and the chance to increase their superiority in third place, however a 2-2 draw between Aberdeen and Dundee United at Pittodrie will be looked on favourably by the Tynecastle club.

Both draws ensured Hearts remain two points clear of United in third, but they will curse the loss of an equaliser in stoppage time against a St Mirren team which rarely threatened during an unremarkable match.

Eggert Jonsson broke the visitors' resilience on 77 minutes after David Obua set up Christian Nade for a shot at Chris Smith. The St Mirren goalkeeper repelled the attempt but Jonsson slotted home competently. That goal looked to be sufficient for three points until Scott Cuthbert's header was converted by Dorman at the back post as late pressure paid dividends for Gus MacPherson's side.

Hearts began the day with more defensive disruption as Christos Karipidis was replaced by Jason Thomson in the home starting line-up. The Greek was beset by a virus and, consequently, Robbie Neilson found himself shunted inside to centre-back to accommodate Thomson at right-back. St Mirren fielded recent signing Mo Camara, the former Celtic full-back, and he instantly found himself on the back foot as Hearts streamed forward from kick-off.

After David Obua's drive trundled wide, the visitors were pinned inside their own half and Smith was required to palm Nade's shot for a corner on 18 minutes. Andy Driver's set-piece landed on Jonsson's right foot only for the ball to bounce back off Smith's left post. Nade could only redirect the rebound wide, but Hearts had certainly signalled their intent.

St Mirren's best opening of the first half was Hamilton's header from Dorman's left-sided free-kick, which finished narrowly wide. Although they offered some intricate passing at times, the Paisley side were regularly threatened by piercing balls in behind their back four. Obua and Driver caused endless problems in wide areas due to some intelligent supply from central midfield. Nade and Gary Glen also combined effectively through the middle, collecting several knock-ons from Obua.

A flurry of bookings occurred on 40 minutes after Hugh Murray bodychecked Lee Wallace in midfield. Aguiar's resultant free-kick was netbound until Smith appeared to touch it on to his crossbar and behind for a corner. However, referee David Somers awarded a goal-kick, enraging many of Tynecastle's natives in the process.

A goal at that juncture would have increased Hearts' confidence for the second half, which began with Larry Kingston replacing Glen and then being stretchered off moments later. The Ghanaian fell unchallenged and clutching his leg during an attacking move and was replaced by Ruben Palazuelos. The reorganisation did not disrupt Hearts' momentum greatly but they were toiling to convert the majority of possession into goals.

Saulius Mikoliunas was introduced with the intention of providing more of a cutting edge. It was the Lithuanian's first appearance since he sustained knee ligament damage against St Mirren last year. Seconds after he stepped on the field, the deadlock was broken. Mikoliunas was not involved but such was the craving for a goal that no-one amongst the home support cared a jot. In fact, it was Jonsson who converted.

Aguiar hurled a free-kick deep into the St Mirren penalty area which was angling out of play until the Icelander launched himself at the ball and somehow hooked it backwards to Obua. He stroked it across the face of goal, Nade's shot rebounded off Smith and a visiting defender before Jonsson finished with authority into the back of the net from around seven yards.

From then on Hearts' task seemed to be one of preservation, but a glarinig miss from Mikoliunas six yards out was to prove costly in the overall context of the game. He sliced Obua's cross into the air and ten seconds into stoppage time Dorman's equaliser secured St Mirren a point. Cuthbert nodded Jack Ross' free-kick downwards and the unmarked midfielder slotted the ball beyond Janos Balogh at the back post.

Given that the visitors played a Scottish Cup tie less than 48 hours before arriving at Tynecastle, they ended the afternoon as the happier of the two clubs.

Hearts (4-4-1-1): Balogh; Thomson, Neilson, Jonsson, Wallace; Obua, Stewart, Aguiar, Driver; Glen; Nade. Subs: Kello, Palazuelos 52 (for Kingston), Mikoliunas 77 (for Stewart), Kingston 46 (for Glen), Mrowiec, Cesnauskis, Elliot.

St Mirren: (4-4-2): Smith; Ross, Potter, Cuthbert, Camara; McGinn, Murray, Dorman, Brady; Mehmet, Hamilton. Subs: Howard, Mason, Haining, Wyness 89 (for Potter), Dargo 80 (for McGinn), Barron, Thomson 57 (for Murray).

Referee: David Somers.

Attendance: 13,609.

At least the Hobos were taken down. That should dampen 6-2's glee a little.

It would be easy to blame a makeshift defence but the problem is we should be scoring more goals, 1 goal is never safe to secure 3pts. Lucky the dons and utd drew. Next weeks the important one, we need to go all out attack cos one goal aint going to get a victory up at tanadice.

Wasn't a great game, but we've played worse and won. St Mirren I felt set out to spoil the game and in the end it paid off for them.

I felt that David Obua was fantastic today. He is growing stronger and more influential with each game.

no mention of driver today,i guess his crossing was poor, was there no drive through the middle, this team cant score more than one goal in a game ,as our average is just above games played,i guess the dons game was a blip.

What a dire game, I know that the regular Centre Backs were out through suspension and illness but, when I saw Neilson lining up in the centre I thought who is going to win the ball in the air? I should have known, nobody, that is Neilson's biggest weakness, timing a jump for a headed ball and young Johnsson is a midfielder trying with mixed success and failure to play centre half. Surely somewhere in the reserves there is a big guy who can play centre half, he could only have been better than today's selections. Towards the end of the game, once panic had set in, every nervous clearance seemed to land at the feet of a St Mirren player. My last point is, I have seen some lousy refs at Tynecastle this season but Mr Somers tops the lot for incompetence, this guy should never be refereeing at this level, perhaps schools football, certainly not for the SPL, he was way out of his depth.

what a chancer,

poor show 21/02/2009 19:32:01
saints were dire on thursday, watched the whole game, one good move and the stiker did his job though, pity ours are not so direct,i say we could pick a decent team from cherry picking the best all about for a few grand that we hand over in pension funds to the foriegners.
9

what a chancer,

oh well 21/02/2009 19:35:35
we can blame refs all year, but did our forwards get chances ,did the forwards get service to produce a good effort, these remarks never get highlighted by our top reporters.

Crosses into the box were worthless because no one ran into the box to meet them. Jimmy Wardhaugh used to say that most goals are scored in the six yard box. Think about it.

Stewart was dire. Looked as though he couldn't be bothered playing at at level he thinks is below him. Everyone else's fault apparently.

9. I hate to disagree with one of my Jambo brethren but while accepting your right to your opinion on some of your points I just cannot see where you are coming from when you say that you thought that the ref was ok. That, in my opinion was one of the worst displays of weak, indecisive refereeing I have ever seen. He had no communication with his linesmen, there was no point of them being there, he was only yards away from play at the Gorgie end when the ball bounced off the St. Mirren player, he gave a goal kick? Robbie was very lucky not to have had a penalty against him early in the game when he climbed all over the St Mirren player in his vain attempt to hed the ball, I could go on and on, I assume that you must have been away for a pie at that time. However, no offence is intended towards you and I hope that you will be smiling next time you leave Tynecastle.

the excuses are coming thick and fast now, csaba :we had the points in our pocket,it took 78 minutes and 12 to lose it:,will he drop these players ,no he will do as he is told.

we cant hold a one goal lead,we are more like to lose the first goal, and we cant seem to score more than one so i guess this is our level, and to think fellow supporters blamed shaggy for all the players nonsense on and of the pitch.

#22 - "You's need a tall commanding centre back..."

Maybe you should ask Romanov for us? After all, didn't we possess such an article until a few weeks ago? Why did we punt Berra at this stage in the season?

And didn't Hearts "mysteriously" fail to sign Laszlo's choice for a replacement? Maybe you could also ask Romanov to explain just how that occurred?

Oh, and there's the matter of signing a proven goalscorer. I read on here that no less than FIVE transfer windows have elapsed during time which Romanov has failed to bring in a such a player.

Why does Romanov continue to ignore this obvious deficiency in the team?

This is a strange season with every team having a brief period of sustained success( ok Hibs are an exception with only 8 wins out of their last 32) and all capable of beating each other.To-day our central defence was weakened by the absence of Karapidis and St.Mirren played to that with the deployment of Mehmet and Hamilton and yet we had the lion's share of possession and could not score the 3 goals that our outfield play merited.
This squad is not good enough for European football and Csaba knows this.We can still finish 3rd because of the way points are dropped by everybody but that might be a pyrrhic achievement if we are then soundly beaten at European level.

#29. I think 27 may just be another disillusioned supporter like many others. Smithy makes point above 1 goal not enough - we havce played 26 games, scored 28 goals so we are not scoring enough and have needed a striker for years.

In 26 games we have also let in 28 goals, so 1 a game is not good enough to win.

Romanov whatever we think of him is NOT STUPID. He knows we need a striker. Hr has done nothing meaningful about it.

I gave up my season ticket until Romanov invests, but I went today. Seen us play worse, but no-one around seemed to have confidence in our attck.

Being consistant, that is the key. Said it last week after the Aberdeen game. If you are not going to score goals then the "D" has to solidify under pressure. St. Mirren must be very happy with result and hats off to them. They did what they had to and Hearts did not. Reality check for Hearts. Again, good, solid teams win these games!!!! Let's go Hearts!!

Have to disagree with you as well mate. Thought Neilson and Jonsson adapted fairly well and Neilson especially got his head to a lot of vital balls (cue for a joke). Also, although the ref got a few decisions wrong (missing the corner from Aguiars free kick) we have had far worse recently. My personal horror show today went to Jason Thomson. I thought he had a howler - does anyone else agree? I think his final ball is dreadful. And he looks like he is running with a sack of coal on his shoulders. Maybe Lazlo did not have other options but IMO this guy is not up to the job. Thought Obua showe a lot of invention today and am increasingly optimistic about his future.

Bleeding Heart,

#29 - People like you will be happy to blank what I say, mainly because you cannot argue against my criticism of Romanov.

You'd rather just pretend it's not happening.

You'd rather just pretend that the major reason we failed to win today is NOT down to Romanov's failure to back Laszlo and invest in strengthening the team.

Piss-poor results like todays obviously don't hurt you enough. Maybe it's YOU that the "Hibbie", eh..?

what a surprise, we had a great chance to stretch our lead over hibs, the dons, and more importantly, dundee utd, and we bottled it, any time we play shi#e teams we seem tp play the same, however if we had been beat from the team sitting bottom by 2 goals i would be really upset, i cant imagine whats going through the minds of our fellow edinburgh men from easter road, 3 weeks ago they were going on about 3rd place, now they must be thinking relagation, i really hope not, but who knows, still no sign of hearts going into adminastration, like the hibby's were all hoping, and i wont lower myself by saying i hope they go down, i would love to see both clubs sitting 1st, and 2nd, but i suppose we can all dream.

34. Now that I have had 24 hours to calm doon and get my blood pressure back to a tolerable level, perhaps I was a bit severe on Hearts and this game which I described as dire. On reflection this was a makeshift team which only looked good when the play was down the other end, away from our weakened defence. Mind you teams like St Mirren always tend to drag other teams down to their 'midden' level. I still think that the ref was an eejit, at least with Brines and 'the Hibby ref' you know that they are in control and know exactly how they are going to cheat you, I see it as a major success if we win a game despite their sleekit efforts. The ref yesterday did not have a clue, I think they had randomly selected this guy from a bus queue in Gorgie Road.
