A SPOKESMAN for Scotland's leading rugby fans organisation today gave a qualified welcome to Andy Robinson as national coach but called for more pro-active thinking within the Murrayfield establishment.
Neil Hunter, from the Forum of Scottish Rugby Supporters, stressed: "A lot of people wish to welcome on board Andy Robinson," but also said: "There's not enough money for a third (pro) team and a whole new approach to investment is needed. With two
pro sides, with the best will in the world there are only going to be 30 players on the pitch at any time."

Mr Hunter, who was also critical of an announcement taking place on the day of major political elections so as to reduce impact, said the Robinson era was getting underway at a difficult time.

"Scotland can't fill a stadium during the Six Nations. It is going to be really, really hard to get supporters back."

A few weeks ago former director of rugby Jim Telfer labelled the selection process "a charade" and Hunter made it clear he would have liked to have seen more established names in the frame.

SRU chief executive Gordon McKie is adamant other high quality candidates were assessed, saying: "A number of other candidates had international playing and coaching experience but Andy's personal atttudes will have an enormous impact."

Andy Robinson is a great choice as coach as he brings not only a wealth of experience of coaching at the highest levels in the sport but also a fresh approach to coaching in Scotland. I wish him all the best.

I agree with the Forum of Scottish Rugby Supporters that the process for selecting him was more akin to the political constituency party candidate selection - all behind closed doors and nobody really knowing what was going on.

Good luck to AR, I'm sure he will be good in the role.

However, there is some deja vu about the whole process. The one we were told by leaks would be appointed at the outset is the one who is appointed at the conclusion. Surprise. The Board had,'t made its mind up at the outset, had it?

I wonder if the job really was advertised widely and real efforts made to encourage the Jake Whites/Rod MacQueens of this world to apply? Doubt it somehow. With the selection panel having no coaches on it, they'd probably not have made the shortlist anyway!

Hey ho, let's hope Robinson is the man.

I would also wish to add my best wishes to Andy Robinson. There is no doubt he has done well in Edinburgh & demonstrated through his good record & ambition that he was a most worthy candidate.

Without meaning to sour these best wishes, I can only wish that "good record & ambition" were words I could also direct at the SRU whose publicity machinery gives the perception of an organisation in certain disarray.

I can but hope, despite rumoured rumblings from Fortress Murrayfield against the current President, that, at the AGM, the Clubs turn up in droves to re-elect Jim Stephenson for a further year.

Then all we would need would be a successful AI, 6N & World Cup to bring disaffected fans like me back to Murrayfield.

Sincere best wishes to AR & JS.
