ROBBIE NEILSON might be in his testimonial year with Hearts but he's unlikely to forget the grounding provided by educational spells in the lower leagues.
The full-back recalls productive loan periods at both Cowdenbeath and Queen of the South as central to his development, according him the necessary experience to later become an SPL mainstay at Tynecastle.

Whilst the club prepare for his testimonial match against selected luminaries from their 1998 and 2006 Scottish Cup- winning sides, Neilson implored Hearts to continue their policy of farming out youth players. Jamie Mole endured an unremarkable spell at Palmerston Park earlier this season but others, such as teenager David Templeton at Raith Rovers, are seeing the benefit brought by loans to provincial sides.

It's something Neilson considers essential to the evolution of a young footballer.

He said: "Any young player outwith the first team has to go and play, especially when you get to a certain age.

"I know Hearts have been looking to get boys out on loan but it's making sure they go to the right place.

"There's no point anyone going anywhere if they aren't going to play and aren't going to enjoy it.

"The club needs to pick the right environment for them to go and play and develop.

"I'm sure the likes of John and Darren Murray keep that in mind when a club shows an interest in one of our young players.

"Playing youth-team and reserve football, nothing really prepares you for facing seasoned pros. You train all week to have a game on a Saturday and when you it makes such a difference. It's a big learning curve."

Neilson is willing to overlook Mole's experience in Dumfriesshire to recommend Queen of the South as a worthwhile destination for any player.

He continued: "I still know a lot of the boys down there and big Neil MacFarlane is there too now. He's a good friend of mine who I speak to most days.

"It was great because I got the chance to play regularly at Queen of the South.

"I still hold the club in my heart and I look for their results on a Saturday after our game.

"The people down there were great with me, it's a well-run club and a real family club with a good spirit about the place.

"I know from speaking to the players that they have a great camaraderie between the players and that is carrying them through the season."

That observation becomes evermore pertinent when Neilson's thoughts transfer to Hearts' current predicament.

Michael Stewart revealed in yesterday's Evening News that defeats aren't always hurting certain players and his colleague is of a mind to agree.

However, notions of the team doing interim manager Stephen Frail a disservice by failing to qualify for the SPL's top six are routinely dismissed. Neilson attests that the entire club aspires higher.

"I don't think we've let Shaggy down, I think we've let the whole club down in not getting to the top six.

"Shaggy took over when we were second bottom of the league and gave us the opportunity to make the top six, which is a great credit to him.

"But a team of Hearts' stature shouldn't be languishing in the bottom six at the end of the season.

"Team spirit goes a long way and it's true some players do hurt more than others. If we can get that here it will serve us well next season. Things have been a lot better over the last few months and we want to build on it.

"It's disappointing to be out of the Scottish Cup when semi-finals are taking place. We have five games left which, although not meaningless, aren't as important as we'd like.

"It's just vital we win them and try to finish the season strongly because that can then carry over into pre-season and then the new campaign."

Farm out Nada, Goncalves, and all the Lithuanians and more - and I mean farm out. They must be more suited to agriculture than professional football. Or mabe they would crap at that too!

Mikey Stewart has called it like it is... too many high earners at the club turning up for the paycheque and not prepared to do enough to earn it!

Only way for ward for the club is to install a new manager who'll bring discipline, pride and a solid work ethic back to Tynecastle. The club also need to clear the decks of the big earners who are the reason for this malaise at Tynecastle. I'm sure the manager will want his own type of player at the club but there are already players there who are good enough to form part of the squad.

Banks, Basso, Berra, Nielson, Karipidis, Wallace, Jonsson, Stewart, Driver, Palazuelos and Miko are the players from this current squad I believe are worth keeping. The rest i'd ship out and promote some of the youth together with the new manager's signings.

Players such as Pinilla, Makela, Beslija, Agiuar, Nade, Tall and Kingston are all better to leave/sold/released for the good of team unity. They may on their day be good... but not right for Hearts and way too expensive for what they offer.

Hearts biggest problem is scoring goals and we need to bring in 3 quality strikers and an attacking midfielder in the mould of Paul Hartley. There are plenty of decent signings within the spl who could bring us the goal threat we need: Riordan and Killen from celtic?' Gow from rangers, Flood and Hunt from Dundee Utd and McCormack from Well for example.

I think we are about 1 manager and 5 or 6 quality signings (who don't have to be world cup stars - just good spl players) away from getting back to where we were 2 seasons ago... challenging at the top of the table.... and that for me would be good enough for starters.

Our under 19 goalkeeper has more chance of winning the Scottish Cup than Hibs ever will with a first division team on loan.
Makes you laugh and even more at the sheep what a chance of getting back into europe they just threw away.
Well done to the lad and QOS what a result!

Buffalo Bill was in Glasgow with his Wild West show the last time the Hobos won the Scottish Cup.

Maybe they need to bring in a few more cowboys to help them.

An ex-submariner helped us.

loaning players out is a great piece of buisness and is the best way for kids to learn.

I also think that more Scottish clubs should look at loans when selling players for example it has been suggested reciently that Berra may be going to Everton, Stephen Fletcher to Real Madrid and Arfield of Falkirk to Man Unt.

While I dont think any of these will happen, if they were then I cant see Berra getting a regular game for at least a year with the others a couple of years off (if learning at good rate)

So why not (if Hearts decide to sell Berra) have it in the contract that he is loaned to Hearts for one more season and if Arfield and Fletcher are sold then have it in their contract that they are loaned to Hibs and Falkirk for at least 2 seasons if they sign 5 year deals. Playing every week is the best way for kids to learn.

The obvious error in that plan Muchacho is that the whole idea of Berra getting a transfer is that he (like a'body else) is DIEING to ESCAPE from DECLINE-CASTLE...why on earth would such players even CONSIDER staying around the madVlad-house for a day longer than necessary?? I mean, it's not like there are likely to be any BIG games coming along foor that formerly-BIG-club that Hearts USED to be, Eh Compadre?

Nice to have a Jambo-free zone when the BIG games of the season are being decided...I mean, who wants to discuss the "also-rans" as the Top6, Cup etc are all sorted.....no place for Jambos among the BIG teams....which is good for Scottish Football, since we don't need any further schizos whacking on about how hard their p1ss poor team is done by all over again...Eh Muchacho???
