Southwell eyes early claim for Lions berth

HUGO SOUTHWELL insists there is no time to waste for players like himself looking to stake claims for a place on next summer's British and Irish Lions tour now that Ian McGeechan has been named as coach.
According to the 41-times capped full-back, who turned 28 yesterday, it is a happy coincidence that pitches his Edinburgh side against McGeechan's London Wasps in a friendly match at Murrayfield on Friday, August 23 to launch the 2008-09 season.

Southwell, speaking at the opening of Trinity Academy's new sports facilities at Bangholm underwritten by Edinburgh City Council and The Big Lottery Fund, said: "Especially those of us with a certain number of caps must have Lions aspirations.

"That Lions tour is only a year away and making a flying start to next season will help your cause.

"The fact everyone now knows who the coach is shows things are moving closer and Geech will be looking at every performance from every single guy with hopes of going on the Lions tour to South Africa.

"Chances to put yourself in the shop window will have to be taken and the visit of Wasps, where Geech is director of rugby, is a chance for Edinburgh players to put themselves in the shop window."

Priority for Southwell, though, is Scotland's forthcoming two-Test trip to Argentina where he hopes to make a first start against the Pumas.

Previously Southwell has been restricted to cameo roles from off the bench – at Murrayfield in 2005 and earlier this season in a World Cup quarter-final in France. "In total I've faced the Pumas for about 12 minutes of my career, so I'm hoping to improve on that," he says.

Southwell is optimistic that strong finishes to the Magners Celtic League season by Edinburgh and Glasgow can be carried over.

He said: "The highlight of my entire season has probably been the way Edinburgh finished with wins over three teams (Leinster, Ospreys and Llanelli) who are not just among the best in our league but also in Europe.

"In the past Edinburgh have struggled in the final third of the season but this year was better."

Edinburgh finished fourth with Glasgow one place behind in the table.

Southwell added: "Our tour party is largely made up of Edinburgh and Glasgow players so confidence is high. It will need to be against the Pumas who are unlikely to vary from there usual approach which will be to try and bully us up front."

Both sides are likely to be without French-based players but Southwell said Scotland would be gearing up as though facing full-strength opposition.

"I spoke to (Leinster's] Felipe Contepomi and he expects to play against us. Also, former Edinburgh player Francisco Leonelli has been doing well for Saracens so they will be strong and for us to expect anything different would be dangerous."

normally I'd come on with a comment such as "southwell? on the lions tour? why are we even discussing it, he should be captain, he is amazing, surey already a shoe in etc etc". This in turn winds up all those people without any grasp of sarcasm and irony such as say Americans or people from Linlithgow.

However this time i have to draw a line in the sand.

This story is a joke, an utter p*sstake of the rugby viewing public of the United Kingdom. Southwell playing for the Lions is just ridiculous. RI-DI-CU-LOUS. I'm actually embarassed thinking about it and feel dirty writing about it. STOP THIS MADNESS.

I never fail to be shocked, not to mention embarrassed, by the overwhelming negativity of some supposed fans of Scottish rugby! Although, it does go some way to explain why the sport in this country is in the state it is if ambition is deemed as ridiculous and madness.

Hugo has more than earned his caps with Scotland and it should be the ambition of every established, and upcoming, international player in the home nations to make the Lions squad. I do think he has a bit to prove to get there (which he says himself) but even if having that as a target only serves to help him regain his pre-injury form then as an Edinburgh and Scotland fan I’ll be delighted. However, I hope he gets there and I’ll be damned proud of each and every Scot who does.

Well fair play to HZ in his support for Hugo. You never know which player will hit form by the time selection comes round. However, this is a bit of column filling if we're honest. Southwell is a steady player but not a magician. Given the preponderence of talent at 10 for example, I can see any one of Hook, Jones and Cipriani potentially filling in at 15 and then full time full backs such as Murphy and Byrne are all ahead of Southwell.

It is good that Hugo is really pressing for the Lions tour next year as it should really lift his game. However, his comment that those with a high number of caps will really be pushing for Lions places really highlights the situation in Scottish rugby. For too long we have given average players the right to wear the sacred jersey and amass loads of caps to the point that he actually believes cap numbers equates to lions places. Cipriani has only a few caps but he'll probably go...Taylor got his first Lions game before he even played for Scotland. Southwell is world class defensively but average at best going forward and reminiscant of Stevie Wonder under the high ball. Argentina are going to go for us up front and play dozens of Garryowens so I hope to hell that he either improves in this area or we have someone else on the field. I hope that Robinson and Lineen persuade Hadden to pick players in form...in which case we can look forward to Thom Evans, Ben Cairns, Nic DeLuca, Johnny Barclay and Ali Strokosch start to amass the caps they surely deserve. It is an embarassment that people like Parks can get 40 odd caps when he has never played a good game for Scotland. Bring on the young guns who are surely going to represent Scotland in NZ in 3 years!

What a laugh. Working with this logic, Andy Henderson must be a shoe in to run out onto Ellis park.

#7 is on the money.

It did make me laugh. Can you imagine a Lions team with Southwell in it? By my reckoning there must be at least five full backs and a dozen who can play full back ahead of him such as Dempsey, Murphy, Lewsey, Cipriani, Tait, Byrne, Morgan, Paterson, Lamont, in fact, if I had to choose between the two, I may even pick Balshaw ahead of him but I'm not too sure about that.

I wonder if Southwell's comment "Especially those of us with a certain number of caps must have Lions aspirations" is reflective of the accepted view of selection in Scotland under Hadden? Also, it shows a complete ignorance of Geech's comments on being announced as coach "There are some exciting prospects around (in Britain and Ireland], and in the next 12 months there will be some more who come up that we're not even talking about at the moment. Having that open mind, before the tour and on the tour, is very important."

I doubt Southwell falls into either camp.

Comment 5 -HZ

This is not negativity on Scottish Rugby.
This is negativity on a very average player called Southwell.
I would have Patterson and Rory lamont over him if I was choosing a a full back from Scotland...

Parks has over 40 caps. Presumably he too should be eyeing a spot on the plane to SA. Mind you, that chance is probably out of the window, with Hadden being so scandalously overlooked for the position of Lions Head Coach...
