THE visitors struck in the 6th minute through a fiercely struck drive by Craig Scott from 25 yards as the Lily defenders backed off. They further increased their lead in the 22nd minute when the Lily midfielder David Edgar unfortunately deflected a G
ordon Brown effort past keeper Craig Weir who appeared to have the shot covered. Easthouses pulled one back in the 37th minutes when David Beattie got in behind the Preston defence to give keeper Russell no chance from ten yards during a period in which the home side had their best spell. Three minutes after the beak Preston booked their place in the next round after Jeff Jones had turned his marker in the Lily box his lay off to Ally Lannin was coolly placed behind Weir in the Lily goal.

Kelso Utd 3 Hawick 0 KELSO got off to a good start and were well on top and a ten minute spell Chris Black hit the post, Alan Tait hit the bar with an 18 yard shot and after good work from Alan Jackson, Paul Wilson missed two easy chances but United took the lead in the 38th minute. A quick free kick from Black put Wilson through and rounded the goalkeeper to score the opening goal. The second half was mostly Kelso on the attack and they increased their lead after 50 minutes with Alan Tait scoring with a tremendous 25 yard shot. Edinburgh Athletic 3 Selkirk 0 SELKIRK had their moments in this Image Printers tie but in the end Athletic won the game more than comfortably showing a clinical finishing touch in front of goal that the visitors simply could not match. The game was decided in a four minute spell in the first half. First, Ingram on 20 minutes with a neat flick finished off a flowing Edinburgh move, and then Seigal four minutes later jumped highest at the back post to score with a powerful header to make it 2-0. John Coogan, continuing in his fine early season form, cashed in a third on the hour with a smart touch and shot on the turn. Coogan also hit the post, as did Chris Black for Edinburgh, but the home side could afford to the profligate on a day when they had too much class for what at the end was a very sorry looking Selkirk side.
Edinburgh: Walker, M Black, Trial, Seigal, Baynes, Olson, McCallum, C Black, Fraser, Coogan, Ingram. Subs: Ross, Crandles, McCrindle, Allan, Brough.

Vale of Leithen 1 Peebles Rovers 3 PEEBLES took the lead in the 20th minute against the run of play. A through ball from Todd released Ferrier who split the Vale defence and slotted the ball past Lumsden from 16 yards. On the half hour mark Vale drew level after a Hume cross was fumbled by Sinclair in the Peebles goal. The alert Tierney poked the ball home from two yards. In the 59th minute Lumsden’s challenge on Todd saw the ball fall to Ferrier who calmly slotted in his second goal to give his side the lead. In the 76th minute a Harley shot was blocked by Lumsden. Ferrier’s cross was converted by Cartwright with a header from close range to make it 3-1 and put the game beyond Vale. Another woeful second-half performance by Vale assured Peebles ran out deserved winners.

Gala Fairydean 3 Edinburgh University 0 EDINBURGH University exerted much of the early pressure and an Ogunru header clipped the home crossbar after only five minutes. Cummings and Munro both missed good opportunities for Gala before the University side went close with several attempts which were all cleared. Young then hit a sweet volley from 25 yards that clipped the University crossbar. McDonald opened the scoring shortly before half time when he perfectly executed a bicycle to a cross from the wing. Just on the hour Mitch Inson allowed a ball into the area to bounce and Young nipped in to chip the ball over Leslie for number two. Gala completed a good afternoon’s work when Young carried the ball out of defence, swapped passed with McDonald and then coolly chipped Leslie once again for the third goal.
Gala Fairydean: Maynard, Munro, Cummings, MacPherson, Newby, Johnstone, McDonald, Young, Finlay, Hume, Doig. Subs: Knox, Wilson, Cannon, Clark, MacLean.
Edinburgh University: Leslie, Robertson, Smillie, Gerrard, Foster, Mitchinson, Ogunru, Smith, Scott, McWalter, Bird. Subs: Clark, Bannen, McLachlan, Lunan.
Lothian Thistle 1 Edinburgh City 5 CITY took the lead in 12 minutes when Chris Gordon intercepted a long passback to the keeper and walked the ball into the net. Thistle replied vigorously, and after much pressure Chico Martinez drilled in a low shot from 30 yards to equalise in 25 minutes. Midfield confusion allowed Chris Nye to restore City’s lead just after the half hour, picking up a loose ball and sliding it under the diving Hynd. Foster netted six minutes before the break but was given offside. After 44 minutes Nye’s overhead kick was headed off the line by the Thistle centre-half. In 55 minutes, Nye made it 3-1 for the visitors, heading in a Seeley corner. City were reduced to ten men when Burgess received a straight red card for kicking out at Lockhart, but Thistle could not capitalise on the advantage. Nye got his hat trick with a 70th minute penalty after Chris Seeley was hauled down in the box, and substitute Gerry Gordon lobbed Hynd’s in stoppage time to make it five.
