Published Date: 26 September 2008
HEARTS players and staff have today received their salaries in full, ending the week-long saga which brought many to question the club's financial predicament.
Weekly-paid players had gone without money since last Friday, whilst non-footballing staff did not receive their monthly wages as normal on the 24th of the month.

The Evening News can reveal that all payments were updated today. The club blamed a technical hitch for the delay as it appeared Hearts' parent company, Ukio Bankas Investment Group, failed to deposit funds into the club's Halifax Bank of Scotland account earlier this month, causing wages payments to fail.

Lithuanian director Sergejus Fedotovas, also a high ranking UBIG official, flew to Edinburgh to alleviate concern amongst employees at Tynecastle and the situation has now been rectified. The club have not commented on reports that Fedotovas was being blamed for the error by UBIG's board of directors.

Concern grew earlier this week when players' wages failed to arrive. Hearts had promised following last Friday's payment failure that funds would be forthcoming at the beginning of the week but then had to revise that timetable and pinpointed today as the new payday.

Monthly-paid staff were informed on Tuesday that their salaries would not be in bank accounts the following day as expected. They were also given today as the day for payment.

The club maintain that day-to-day operations remain unaffected by the hitch as they prepare for tomorrow's SPL match against Dundee United at Tannadice.

Funny how the Scotsman reported today the debt was around £15m (more likely to be closer to £20m) yet none of the Hobonomics experts came on to dispute the figs.

We still have a large debt - approx £18-19m but that is a lot less than the £38m being reported.

How ironic would it be if the newspaper business went into meltdown and their wages weren't paid. That would be a happy day indeed.
I dont suppose Hibs will ever suffer the same fate, a quick beggig session up Princes St should be suffice to cover payment of their wage bill.

I can't get over the sheer number of fanneeybaz who support Hibs, and spout utter pash day in day out.
I am the first to admit that Hearts should not take this long to resolve, what should have been a straight forward issue, but the tumshies from Leith go into a frenzie at every turn, screaming "tick tock" or some other gash.
This story has pluses and minuses...It's good that guys like Stewart, Berra and a few others got squared up. An absolute travesty that some of the other first team squad, eg. The Bosnian Balloon, got paid in full.

Chas,

I watched a programe on Scottish politics earlier in the year and they had the chief executive of Johnston press in the studio and they were asking him questions about the threat to Scotland's national newspapers from Murdoch and the like who are expanding in Scotland and printing 'Scottish' editions of the Large British papers.

Apparently the Johnston family now own only a minimum stake in Johnston press as they are struggling in the face of this competition and have sold much of their stock to foreign investors.

The falling sales of the newspaper have put them on a sticky wicket and the exec's response was that they are looking into modernising and especially moving forward with the online side of things. the interviewer then asked how they expected to make money from this and he was completely stumped.

Pot Kettle and Black... three words that Bathgate should think about.

So, this particular issue has been resolved in full, and herts are indeed still in business.

All the doomsayers have been proven to be a bit premature with their predictions and, as it stands, there is likely to be a derby on 19/10.

So, until the next 'issue'.

Because, no matter what the subject matter - no manager, no wages, players not signing, signing and not playing, new stand/no new stand, etc., etc. the only thing that is certain is something will happen.

This is the only guarantee while Vlad's circus is in town.

Terrible news this. With the big fat pay packet this week the players will all be out on the lash tonight and will still be half cut tomorrow. But to be serious I reckon tomorrow is a banker for a draw. Dundee Utd can't score for toffee just now but their defence is pretty solid. If your forwards can get past Lee Wilkie without being scythed down you might sneak a win but I reckon it'll be honours even.

Latest from our undercover reporter deep within Tynescastle:

Nade was seen entering his card into the cash machine on gorgie road, and after a few quick looks over his shoulder took out a load of cash (So confirmation wages are there) he was then seen entering Greggs to spend it.

A few of the players Girlfreinds have been seen hovering around Harvey Nicolls doors with mobile phones in their hands, after recieving calls to confirm the players wages were in the bank the swooped into the store.

*Exclusive* reports later on the contents of their bags, and what the players themselves have been spending their money on.

I'm totally divided here... I can't work out whether there is actually "troobel at mill" or if this WAS a technical glitch...

If it's the latter, then congratulations must go to the Scottish press for BLOWING up this story sensationally! And making me brown my kegs. If indeed this is a technical glitch, and we're all worried about nothing, then I have to finally agree that the Scottish press has it in for Hearts.

Theres no doubt Vlad has really riled them. This story proves how much they bay his blood. I doubt it has been stage managed, but in the mad world of Vlad I'd put nothing past him to wind up these contemptable bunch of sensationalists.
Problem in society is people actually beLIEve what they write.
Its very difficult for anyone to evaluate whats coming from within Tynecastle these days, but that may be no bad thing.
Publicity is the tool Romanov thrives on, despite the war, is there a new deal in the making, did Hearts need to be in the news again and widespread? Has he used the press to get Hearts back in peoples attentions?
Vladimir Romanov is no fool however he is perceived in this country, he is cool and calculating and I put nothing past him. That can be good or bad, but rarely sits on the fence.

All the Hearts Supporters who think that everythings OK now that the staff and players have been paid are ignoring the questions which have not been answered. If you don't care, if you have no interest in finding out what happened, then fair enough but it's a bit much to complain about Hibs supporters being interested enough to make comments as they have.

Probably 99% of Hibs supporters would not like to see Hearts go out of business. But the Hearts supporters with their arrogance about the "Big Team" and splitting the OF this season invite comments such as the more brutal ones we have seen over this matter.

Now, to top it all, you're really not interested in what has happened here. Sufficient that the wages have been paid and lets not look any deeper.

The words "Blind stupidity" spring to mind.

#75 Good God. Can't you read? My criticism is directed at those Hearts supporters who are too frightened to look for the answers.

Incidently I'm not a Hoboeconomist but I cant help thinking that, when placing money in a bank is a weekly occurance then there is always a procedure in place to ensure it happens timeously. In other words, unless someone deliberately interfered then the transfer of funds would have taken place.

Its a reasonable assumption going by the oceans of drivel your peers subject upon us every day since the sacking of Burley.

i personally do not care about hibs debt etc and how much exposure they have to the global credit crunch, only really think about hibs on derby day so why so many hibs fans are so intersted in UBIGs share price etc is baffling! i mean what exactly can you work out from it and why would you want to? it is not going to tell you if hearts are going bust sow hy look deeper.

how is the credit crunch effecting hibs??...do you know? think you should look deeper into that and the issue that hearts could have easily paid hibs wage bill with a quick whip round. and the fact you have one of the worst derby records in the world, your team havent won the sc in 107 years...concern yourself with those things.

#77 I take on board your point, however, players wages can (and most definately are) linked to things like games played, clean sheets, goals scored, assists, as well as their basic wage so this will require manual intervention. Same can be said for normal staff, this could be holidays, days off sick, overtime, hours worked etc. so again manual intervention required. And as I am sure everyone will agree, the person/people/department processing these could make mistakes! The Bank itself is capable of making mistakes, which I am sure is of no shock to you all!

I am not saying everything is rosey now that they have been paid, however, the hysteria surrounding this has been way over the top and quite unbelievable! If it happens again in the next 6 months then I would worry a lot, but for now I am content.

#77 Im perfectly capable of reading thank you but have got to the stage where if there is a mistake happening at the club EVERYONE is making a mountain out of a molehill. Yes the mistake was a major clusterfvck, but this happens in many other companies from time to time. I am reserving judgement on Hearts' financial predicament until there are other problems occurring.

If it means anything to you, I beleive that Hearts use an overdraft facility with HBOS (as many companies do) to pay staff and then the appropriate funds are transfered afterwards. HBOS may have withdrawn the overdraft facility under their struggling circumstances and left Hearts missing pay day by a week. Just a theory but it makes sense to me.
82

Private Pike,

26/09/2008 13:58:45
#82 Makes sense if you ignore the fact that it took a week before the mistake was put right. Why a week when if it was just a technical glitch it could have been sorted more or less immediately? We are talking peoples wages here.

#81 True enough but I wasn't talking about the payroll preparation. I was talking about the transfer of funds from Ukio Bankas to HBOS. I would contend that it would have gone ahead unless someone from either HBOS or Vlads Bank stopped it.

#79 See what I mean?

PP - maybe Vlad bought into the scare stories about HBOS 'going bust' and decided not to deposit any money for wages until the picture became clearer? He does appear to be a tight-fisted git, and given that money deposited with a UK bank is only covered up to the level of £35k if the bank goes bust, he decided not to take the risk?

Again, just a theory. Would also explain why they didn't want to say what the problem was though.....

#83 I dont know if you have experience in working with payroll, but here goes...

It takes three working days to pay wages into accounts. It also takes perhaps a day or two to find the source of the problem and make sure it doesnt happen again. To me that pretty much sums it up.

I am not a Vlad supporter nor am I ignoring the fact that Hearts have hit the headlines for the wrong reasons and I am watching closely as I can for any other indications of financial meltdown, but until there are other indications - ie next pay day as someone else put on here earlier, I will not speculate.

Judging by Charlie Manns interview last week on the tranny, I'm guessing, and it is a guess what has happened.
The money is controlled by a man who knows as much about Hearts as he does about the Bosnian Postal System.
There was a crash last week. UBIG are heavy on credit control. The money earmarked for Hearts HBoS account has found a new emergency home temporarily or possibly there were higher priorities, to the financial bods, than funding that account.
Mann however categorically stated UBIG were anything but struggling financially, but he did state the form of cash transferrance that did take place between Lithuania and Scotland left a lot to be desired.
Probably why certain folk dont get paid on time.

Happy Days are Here Again!!!
Think again.
Another bleak day for Mad Vlad on the dodgy Baltic Stock Exchange.
His free falling bank took another pounding despite the best effort of his market makers to hold the fort. Closing at a new low of 1.86 LTLs (whatever the fvck that is)
Down from the 1.97 line in the Lithuanian sand he drew on Thursday. There was a huge sell off at around 11.30 as the punters dumped 40,000 shares in a few minutes. 847,000 on the day. Bank records show the Vladster personally holds 64 million shares.
If he hadn't met payroll at Tyncastle it would likely have turned into a bloodbath.
It ain't over 'til it's over.

A guy sitting at a bar at Heathrow Terminal 3 noticed a really beautiful woman sitting next to him.
He thought to himself: "Wow, she's so gorgeous she must be an off duty flight attendant. But which airline does she work for?"
Hoping to pick her up, he leaned towards her and uttered the Delta slogan: "Love to fly and it shows?"
She gave him a blank, confused stare and he immediately thought to himself: "Damn, she doesn't work for Delta."
A moment later, another slogan popped into his head. He leaned towards her again, "Something special in the air?"
She gave him the same confused look. He mentally kicked himself, and scratched Singapore Airlines off the list.
Next he tried the Thai Airways slogan: "Smooth as Silk." This time the woman turned on him, "What the f**k do you want?"
The man smiled, then slumped back in his chair, and said "Ahhhhh, .Ryanair!!!

Excellent Article in the Guardian today. And an example to the amateur journalists on how reporting should be carried out. Here is just a little snippet

"Gloating amateur economists, meanwhile, continue to predict that their notion of the famous old ground being turned into flats within two years is proving more and more prescient by the week. There is no fundamental basis to these theories, mind you, other than Romanov being eastern European, therefore apparently untrustworthy, and owning a little-known bank with which Hearts have borrowing facilities."

"Here's a more concrete statistic; Ukio Bank accounts for 13% of UBIG's operations. Not 80%, not even 50%. InErgo LLC, for example, a US-based investment company, has double Ukio's involvement in UBIG. And few of us know anything about InErgo, other than them being registered in the American state of Delaware. UBIG's entire asset worth may be quoted as hundreds of millions – profits considerably less – but nobody in three years has fully explained the Hearts financial conundrum. Random predictions of Romanov selling Tynecastle and disappearing into the distance hardly help; they also appear unjust by the mere fact that Hearts's borrowings outweigh the value of the stadium, even if that debt is now considerably less than the £36.25m reported in July 2007."

#105 said, "Of course Ukio/UBIG are being affected. There again so will any shares Tom farmer has as well, and david Murray and any other business."

Let's change the scenario for a moment. Let's say that it wasn't Hearts staff that weren't paid last week but workers at United Distillers (or whoever it is these days) between Tynecastle and Westfield Road. Would there have been a media frenzy and talk of impending doom? Nope, and why? Because United Distillers aren't a football club that's why! The press these days (and a lot of fans) equate failure to pay wages by a football club with imminent administration and completely discount any other valid reason! OK it has to be said that normally when a club doesn't pay its staff it's usually a precursor to extinction but not always.

Oh and I still think it'll be a draw tomorrow. For Sunday I don't hold out much hope of a home win but nevertheless will be delighted if we get one.

Hearts's financial system works something like this; money is regularly, but not at a set amount nor at a set time, transferred from Lithuania into the club's main current account with Halifax Bank of Scotland. From there, wages and routine bills are paid in accordance with outgoings reported from Hearts's financial director to the Ukio Bankas Investment Group, the parent company.

Or sometimes not; the club has gained a reputation as notoriously slow payers. Therein lies not only a cultural anomaly – Romanov and UBIG would routinely work on a 90-day, rather than the 30 accepted in this country, payment period for creditors – but problem number one is a failure to pay staff. Sheriff's officers have visited Tynecastle in the past, stories of non-wage payment will surely only panic businesses owed money by Hearts into similar action. The most reasonable explanation from Hearts officials relating to the wage issue was that transferred money ended up in the wrong account, so maybe someone got lucky.

I get paid on a monthly basis! My wife works for the bank my wages get paid into! if i get paid on a friday my wife can tell me there is a request pending for monies to be put into my account on the wednesday, On the thursday my wife can tell me exactly how much is going into my account so this tells me that when you pay people via BACS it wont just happen on the same day.

I work in the employment sector and am aware in order for the workers to be paid on a friday then the wages have to be processed by end of play tuesday!

IM sure the referee will be very impartial, after all its only Hearts fans and Vlad that are crazies and think there is a biased in this country towards the OF with regards to refs or the media. SO i dont expect to hear any complaints from hibs fans when Novo or Boyd decide to take a 10 point dive in the box with 3 mins to play and the ref gives rangers a penalty even though the nearest hibs player is some 10 yards behind play, and they score it winning the game and giving them 3 points. Neither will i expect any complaints when Hibs players are chopped down all over the pitch by rangers players and no fouls given only for Mendes to trip on a blade of grass between himself and Jones and Jones is shown the red card.

And this just in from Goal.com.

"Inevitably, the wage fiasco had knock-on affects and a group of international businessmen were reportedly keen on buying out Vlad's 82% stake in the Tynecastle club.

However, supremo Romanov's confidant Liutauras Varanavicius, also head of the Lithuanian FA and heavily involved in Ukio Bankas, has insisted that Vlad won't be selling up.

Varanavicius explained: "There were people there - it’s true they wanted to buy out the club - but they were not serious in my eyes."

When asked about a possible sale in future, he responded: "Look, everything is for sale if the price is right. You cannot say 100 per cent that it would not happen in the future.

"But I don’t expect Vladimir to sell Hearts, I expect him to expand his activities in football instead.

"I can assure you he’s not lost any passion for Hearts and I can also say there are no money problems."

So who are these shady "international tire kickers? And what's the "right price."?

Now i know you hobos are not the quickest, but really you should make an effort to keep up with events, I posted that story days ago. Its old news.

#155
The guy i know who works there told me one time a bad of "Riordens Finest" fell from the top of a ladder while someone was emptying it into the mixer the bag split and the stuff was everywhere. The guy was sacked on the spot all the workers were taken out till a cleaning crew went in and cleaned it up, no-one was allowed anywhere near it. The mind boggles at how much one of those bags would cost, cause there not little ones, just a little smaller than a 55kg bag of potatos.

#158

As was already pointed out earlier, the whole stock market is in turmoil especially today. Your point about Vlads or UKIO's or UBIG's shares dropping is what exactly?

Guys on the make like Mad Vlad don't just leave 64 million bank shares sitting around in the top drawer of his dresser under the socks.
They "leverage" the value as backing for other deals.
Now a lot of that has been wiped out because the punter are bailing out and the market makers are desperately trying to hold the price at 1.97 LTLs. Which they failed to do today.
Especially after Standard and Poors put his bank on what amounts to a death watch over a huge expansion in loans despite falling real estate values back home and in Russia.
There's a real interesting section in Ukio Bankas unaudited second quarter statement that shows the number of loans which are either "past due" or "individually impaired."
That doesn't mean p!ssed as usual. It means who ever borrowed the money ain't making the payments on time.
Kinda like the Tyncastle payroll.
What the Great Lithuanian may have pledged those shares against isn't known. There's no required stock market disclosure about the private side of his business.
Now his best buddy and Lithuania's soccer supremo (an oxymoron surely?)says there are mysterious "international" tire kickers out there.
As the guy said in All the President's Men "Just follow the money."
Clear as mud, right?

Definitely something fishy about this whole story, unfortunately it is highly unlikely the evening news will be able to find out what it is until it has been reported by other newspapers.

Why would Vlad or his representatives not simply come out and say they were waiting for the HBOS situation to be resolved before putting further money in?

Why will they not give any details on the "technical hitch"

HBOS must know something if they refused to extend Hearts overdraft? Seems rather strange they would do this if UBIG are so regular with their payments?

No one is really in a position to say everything is ok just as no one can really say it isnt. Time will tell...

MTG just seems like it would have been the logical suggestion and would have nipped this in the bud at the start of the week. Why would HBOS say that Hearts applied for an overdraft extension and it was rejected if Hearts are claiming it is a "technical glitch"? Are HBOS against Hearts too? Surely IF UbiG are as reliable as they would have you believe then HBOS would have had no problems extending this overdraft as it would be more money for them?

NotAgain...surely!!!!,

The joke i made may have been in slightly bad taste because id mentioned the fact he was going back home to be with his wife while she gave birth or something like that. That maybe while he is there he could listen to his favourite pop stars record collection, I dont have to spell out the pop singers name that i mentioned.

Nothing scandelous about married at 17, it was intendeed as a little jbe to noise you lot up, and it worked at the time. Certainly a lot less harmless than the jokes and comments made about hearts and our fans regarding rix's appointment, and then the comments when a story appeared in the paper regarding an underage girl meeting a guy at tynie at a match etc etc.

this match will be the same as falkirk, any slackness and we will be punished, must take our chances with more directness ,make the goalkeeper work and pounce on thier weakness.

United are far too strong for the current Hearts team,
2-0 3-1 for the arabs.

My summation of the week:
Hearts suffered an embarrassing cash-flow crisis which saw players and staff go without wages for up to seven days.
In the midst of the worst financial crisis in almost 80 years. When investors are extremely jittery.
Not exactly the sort of news to encourage people to maintain faith in Ukio BANKas or UBIG.
Meanwhile, Ukio's shares have been by far the most heavily-traded on the Vilnius stock exchange in Lithuania this week, yet have still nosedived.
An amateur like myself might reckon that the owners have been (unsuccessfully) trying to prop up their own share price, but have had little support.

The value of the Balkan Investment Fund (managed by UBIG's Balkan Investment Bank) has continued to nosedive).
And its major investment in Republika Srpska, the Birac alumina plant, gave up 98% of its capital last week to cover bad debts and its shares are down 86% in 12 months.
Three of Balkan Investment Fund's other major investments have plunged in value this year.

Even to an amateur like myself, it would seem that this is a very bad time to be having such a coming-together of bad news.
Today's depositing of wages may, in time, be seen as merely a stay of execution.

Have a nice weekend!

_______RELIEF AS WAGES INCIDENT SETTLED!_________________
Derek Riordan wishes to make it clear that his wages issue with Hibs has been settled and was nothing more than a genuine misunderstanding.Young Derek went to Rod Petries office on Thursday to say that his first weeks wages had still not appeared in his account but was quickly put at ease by Mr.Petrie when they were pointed out to him later in the afternoon. He later apologised to Mr.Petrie and said "I see the weeks wages now sir" to which Mr.Petrie replied "That`s for the month son,now get out and don`t bother me again."

There you go again, your obsessed man...obsessed.
Pay particular attention to the first paragraph here. Then concentrate on the second. This is taken from a newspaper with a lot more credibility than your tabloid gutter rags or the amateurs that copy and paste on here, and from someone who knows what they are talking about

Increased profits - yes they really are in trouble! You think UKIO Bankas is the only investment house to have some dog funds?

I suggest you go back to reading the money page in The Sun, it seems more like your level!
