Hearts 1
Craigan (og 11)

Motherwell 0
HEARTS secured another vital three points in the battle to make the top six before the league splits.

An own goal from Motherwell's Stephen Craigan after just 11 minutes was enough to hand the Tynecastle side victory at Fir Park.

In a match that was dictated by the gusty conditions, the closest Motherwell came to an equaliser was in the dying minutes when Hearts keeper Steve Banks pushed away a goal-bound free-kick from Ross McCormack.

The Tynecastle side had a chance to open their account early in the match when a poor corner from Deividas Cesnauskis was missed by Well's first line of defence. The ball somehow made its way across the face of goal but Christian Nade's powerful effort from 10 yards was blocked by the body of the diving Graeme Smith.

The Frenchman decided to have another go a couple of minutes later when he found space on the left but his curling shot was just a couple of feet too wide of Smith's left-hand post.

Motherwell had still to carve out their first chance when Hearts carved out their third in the opening eight minutes, this time when Nade laid the ball off for Cesnauskis with a back heel. The Lithuanian raced to the edge of the box before giving Lee Wallace – who was playing on the left side of midfield rather than his more familiar full-back position – but the Scotland Under-21 star wasted the chance by blasting the ball high over the crossbar.

They got the goal their play merited with 11 minutes gone but the home side were left kicking themselves at the manner in which it was conceded. It was a long ball from Eggert Jonsson which caught Stephen Craigan out, the Fir Park defender turning the ball past his own goalkeeper as he tried to shut out the threat of the advancing Calum Elliot.

The gusting wind ruined the game as a spectacle but the Jambos could have increased their advantage when a slip by Paul Quinn hanbded possession back to Wallace. The 21-year-old's progress towards goal was immediately halted by a crude challenge from Craigan and whistler Craig Thomson had no hesitation in awarding a free-kick but Elliot could only fire it high and wide of Smith's net.

The closest Motherwell came to levelling was a 66th-minute corner from Ross McCormack that was headed just over the bar by Marc Fitzpatrick.

Elliot was booked with 15 minutes remaining when he slid in late on Smith and Jonsson followed him just seconds later after a challenge on Chris Porter.

McCormack, who has been so deadly for the Steelmen this season, took the free-kick which resulted from Jonsson's foul and it almost made the net, Steve Banks required to make his first real save of the afternoon by diving low to his left and beating it away for a corner.

It was swung straight back in by sub Darren Smith from the flag and both McCormack and Fitzpatrick stuck their boot in after Banks had parried but the Englishman did well to claim the ball and smother it as Robbie Neilson remonstrated with the Fir Park players for their close attention to his keeper.

Banks was called upon again five minutes from time when he was forced to palm away a cracking free-kick from McCormack, who had seconds earlier been brought down by Jonsson.

It was a top-class save from the Tynecastle keeper and it could prove to be a priceless one for Hearts in the battle to earn a place in the top six of the SPL this season.

Motherwell: Smith, Quinn, Hammell, Reynolds, Craigan J Murphy 83), Hughes (D Smith 54), Lasley, Fitzpatrick, Porter, McCormack, Clarkson (Lappin 30). Unused subs: Daniels, McLean, Murphy, Archdeacon.

Hearts: Banks, Karipidis, Wallace, Palazuelos, Nade (Beniusis 83), Neilson, Jonsson, Berra, Elliot (Zaliukas 87), Cesnauskis (Mikoliunas 72), Goncalves. Unused subs: Basso, Thomson, Ivaskevicius, Ksanavicius.

Er, yes. Do you still need a degree to become a journalist? Even the basic ability to read over what you've written? How about just to be able to count?!....

You know, part of me likes to think that Mixu 6-2 is actually an academic with a PhD in physics, who is coming on here acting like an imbicile just to take the p#ss. Sadly, I know that the truth is he's actually the living equivalent of Spud Murphy's even stupider brother. Who's ugly. And smells of wee.

Ive stopped wasting my time with the pathetic, low life, braindead, junkie and/or inbred species that hide out the slums of feaster road and leith. They have always and will always be below Hearts and every Hearts fan in every way possible, whether it be in football or social standing. Their constant pitfull abuse on Hearts stories on serves to prove one thing their small team metality and inferiority complex attitude. If they had a team and social standing as big and good as ours they would have enough to talk about on their own threads.

treat them you would treat something undesirable you may stand on in the streets of leith or fester road andjust wipe it of with a stick.

Vic, I have twice commented on hibs stories on these forums in all the time i have been on here, I know other Jambos comment on them but I dont see anywhere near the amount of Jambos or comments on hibs stories, obviously something to do with the fact we dont care about a smaller club, we concentrate on our own affairs and let others take care of theirs.

agree with #23 - the three points is all that matters. It might have been attained in an undignified manner with a Motherwell player down injured at the time & can understand them being upset but it was awarded and gave us a good & welcome victory. We seem to have turned it around now & hopefully can finish as high up as possible which if lucky will give us a place in the top 6. Which in all honesty we probably don't deserve. Think it is wishfull thinking to comment about getting the UEFA cup spot. It will not happen but if it did what would that say about the general standard of the SPL for us to go from fighting relegation to Europe in a few weeks.

Like I said good win - lets keep it up - hope I did'nt sound to negative.

Steve, there was issues a year or so back about that sort of thing, that when a player goes down teams were kicking the ball out the park sportingly, however teams and players were using the good sporting behavious they expected to cheat, ie go down stay down if your teams on the defence or opponants are anywere near your penalty area. There were several incidents of blatent cheating with regard to this, and at the time it was then widely accepted that you play to the whistle, unless the injured player has recieved a head knock in which the ref would and should stop play immediately himself.

Us hearts fans really do need to worry a lot,I mean Stevie Frail and the 1-0 wins playing the rubbish like elliot, wallace and nielson.

We may finnish top six but this guy will take us nowhere he has a really poor football brain. The wins achieved have been lucky and no good football on show.

Hearts will go backwards even further next season with this guy in charge Romanov has not kept the promise of a new manager he made on January 1st.

No wonder you and all the other 'Hobos' are on the Hearts threads all the time. Come out the closet and admit you want to be a Jambo.

Poxy 6-2, you know you want to! You are never off this site. Very few BIG team supporters over on your threads because you don't appear on our radar. Too small and insignificant! Correct?

Plantagnet,

Mixu 6-2 already has a missus, five kids and two dugs.

If he was to get hitched to Colleen, he would then be a bigamist.

The maximum penalty for bigamy, I believe, is two mothers-in-law.

Or is that referring to the two dugs?

Get well soon Eduardo.

Hi folks just popped on to wish Hearts well in there conquest of Motherwell, its true that Football sides all over the world at any level need to win games like this to show signs of improvement.
I dont believe that this is by any means the best pool of players at Hearts , i do believe that the moral of this sqaud is picking up.

Id like to say well done to Hibernian Fc for there own battle after selling some top quality footballers.
