WHITBURN started brightly with both Alex Lurinsky and Colin Strickland forcing saves from Andrew Sheridan prior to the opening goal. This came on the quarter-hour mark when an in-swinging Chris Dolan cross from the right was headed powerfully into the net by David McGurk.

McGurk and Dolan combined again in the 25th minute but this time the former's near post header just missed the target. A Scott Murphy free kick fell to Colin Leiper on the half hour but his shot went wide.

Broxburn started the second half strongly
and within a minute a long range shot from Stephen Payne was tipped over by Stewart Walker. Then Barry Craig came inside from the wing and shot from 25 yards, striking the post with Walker beaten.

On the hour an Alan Dickov cross was also knocked onto the post this time by Walker and the rebound was hit back in wide of the post by John Wilson. Whitburn got the second decisive goal in the 67th minute when a Strickland free kick found John Murphy and he shot into the net from eight yards. There was no way back for Broxburn and the home side ran out comfortable winners.
