Published Date: 29 August 2008
MARIAN KELLO has emerged as the favourite to become Hearts' first-choice goalkeeper after faultless displays in two appearances for the club.

Manager Csaba Laszlo today endorsed the Slovakian's credentials as the leading candidate to establish himself permanently in the side. Kello, on a season-long loan from FBK Kaunas, faces competition from Hungarian Janos Balogh, with Laszlo admitting those two will contend the No.1 position ahead of Jamie MacDonald.

Kello impressed during Wednesday night's goalless draw with Airdrie United in the Co-operative Insurance Cup – the tie ended in a penalty shoot-out defeat for Hearts – having looked assured against St Mirren last weekend.

According to Laszlo, those outings have earned him a crucial advantage in a goalkeeping battle which is beginning to intensify. Hearts visit Hamilton tomorrow and the manager has yet to decide who will form the last line of his defence.

"At the moment, Kello is one step ahead. He has been in goal for the last two matches and has not had a bad game. He has not made a mistake," said Laszlo. "He did a good job on Wednesday and there is big competition for our goalkeeping position now. We have three good goalkeepers and the competition is high, but especially between Balogh and Kello. It will be a very good fight."

Balogh has yet to play for Hearts after receiving international clearance on Wednesday to complete his six-month loan from the Hungarian club Debrecen. The decision on tomorrow's goalkeeper will be a late one.

"We will see what happens, we have training and then I must look at our goalkeepers and make a decision," added Laszlo. "This is not easy but the players understand the situation."

Another Kaunas employee, Polish midfielder Adrian Mrowiec, was expected in Edinburgh today after joining Hearts. It is thought he is at Tynecastle on a season-long loan from the Lithuanian champions but the terms of his move have yet to be confirmed.

Laszlo also revealed that Mirsad Beslija has suffered a setback in his attempts to recover from knee ligament damage. The Bosnian winger began light training after a six-week absence but recurring pain forced him to stop.

The Bosnian winger sustained the injury shortly after the start of pre-season training in July and subsequently missed all friendly matches and the ten-day tour of Germany.

"This is the most difficult case," said Laszlo. "I don't have any positive news about this guy at the moment. It was positive that he was slowly starting with running again but he had pains and the doctors must decide what we do in the future.

"At the moment, he is definitely injured and we cannot use him. It's not easy for the guy or for the club. I hope for the best with him."

Most positive news we could have about him is that he's being punted.

We still have no stability. If Kello is no.1 then so be it, keep him there for at least 10 games.

Jury is out on all our new players, Obua was v poor mid week, as were most of the team but players need time and can't be judged this early.

3 points against Hamilton (home or away) should be a must for us but I have the feeling we would take a point at the moment.

Another strange comment from the manager!

Laszlo Puppet

You really cant make this up. What a U-turn after only a few days: "I call the shots on choice of goalkeeper", "Balogh is my first choice". Next Bologh will be on his way out because he is considered untrustworthy. If anybody cant see the ghostly hand of Moronov behind this they must be blind. Laszlo you are turning into Shaggy!

It looks like Kello has won the battle of the goalkeepers rotation policy (and Vlad has dictated the selection policy). So, the question is, will he be sold in this transfer window or next?

Although I dont think Kello has been properly tested yet at least we know who is starting in goal from now on. At least there is a bit of stability there as rotating goalkeepers is dangerous.

#1 Aye Obua was proper 5hite against Airdrie, but he has only played two games for us. Lets reserve a bit of judgement until hes platyed a few more. He didnt look too bad against St Mirren and Id prefer his to have a poor game in the Diddy cup than the league!
12

GrahamH,

I was in St Kitts for a month, but picked up the guy hadn't had to make a save, so can't see how much of an advantage that is?

Beslija can be written off can't he, there's enough cover there so apart from his wages is just a distraction from the real job - finding the strike force that's been talked about for 8 months.

Seriously i hope this Dave Shaw guy meets you in the street or the pub one day and gives you the hiding of your life you daft wee laddie.

So the story we are all getting bent out of shape about is that one of our goalkeepers has had a couple of good games and so is now the favourite keep the gloves... My reaction to that is: Good stuff.

Jamie has a great future ahead of him and Balogh will just have to wait until injury or suspension keeps Kello out so he can take his chance.

Beslija's time must now be at an end and I expect a Panilla style exit to follow shortly.

WE NEED A STRIKER! (Get Glen in and be patient with him rather than treating him the way elliot was)

#24 I for do not beleive that Csaba is picking the team 100% outright. However, I do believe he is the best man for the job under the circumstances. He knows how to deal with the Eastern European culture that Romanov operates and the team play far better than last season. We play the ball around the park more and have a more creative spark in the side. All we need is a decent forward - hopefully Tullberg - and we can see more goals.

As for Kaunas - they are a feeder team. Thats the fact of the matter. I can only hope that Csaba has first shout on these players and that they just dont turn up at Riccarton.

Interesting questions...

Hmmm well the first one is easy enough, I am a Hearts fan contributing to the comments on a Hearts story.

Secondly I know lots of things, I know a little about football, natural history, current affairs and my general knowledge is reasonable.

Hope that answers your questions, now...

You are having a laugh we are absolutely powder puff in the last third of the field.

Do you realise how desperate your post sounds. Lets wake up and smell the coffee here. Laszlo is just another Romanov puppet, albeit one who talks a good game and manages to disguise the fact he's being worked for the back a little better that his predecessors.

1st. bto has extended his lead by a brassneck
2nd. Bluetoes has dropped of the pace(run out of drool)
3rd.Pundiddy dropped way back because he has gone to his scratcher.

As the Muppet race pundit i expect Pundiddy to make a recovery laters and give Bluetoes a run for his drivel.
I reckon bto has accumulated too much of a lead to be caught.
But in the Muppet race you just never know ??

#42 No its not desperate, its realising the situation that Hearts are in and that we have a manager who is willing to work within that culture and has the team playing decent stuff - Airdrie result aside. If you actually read my previous comment, I said we needed a striker to finish off the final third. We are creating chances - watch the St Mirren highlights if you dont beleive me - and that signals creating, ie creative to me.

I merely think you come across as someone who has a lot of pent up hostility in them and through an inferiority complex you are not able to stand up to your opressers face to face so are reduced to starting wee vendettas against people who don't have the luxury of standing in front of your face when you start your bitter little tirades.

I'm really disappointed in Hearts after Weds.
Not because we're out of a cup that has been constantly devalued for many years now, or the fact we created umpteen chances and couldnt score against a first division, though admittedly a well drilled one, nope because its brought out all the loony's again.

Obua had a bad game, so what. When I was younger, I was stupid enough to say after 2 games Ricardo Fuller was a waste of space, and look at him now.

Its early days, there is no real evidence to say Vlad is interfering other than the usual wild speculation that follows Hearts around.

In 1986 we had our best team in years, they got beat by Montrose at exactly the same stage of the League Cup, by 2-0 and they were in the bottom tier, less of a threat than Airdrie.

Lets wait a couple of months then judge, at least until we've played everyone once.

But you see you keep making references to yourself as if you are a bit of a hardman.

You may not realise it but it is in all your posts...

"Not the easily bullied type."

"You mistake politeness for weakness.
A bad mistake to make, in certain circumstances."

Then there's your name "Bring them on"... Sounds to me like you are overcompensating for something.

Also your first response to my post was: "Who are you, and what do you know?"

Seems a little agressive that is all... you know like the sort of person who feels inadequate due to being treated badly his peers and so is reduced to creating this whole new alter ego on line where he can be as big and bad as he likes without fear of repercussions... I don't know... like a sort of release from the hardships of real life?

I may be wide of the mark though as i was just enquiring after your health due to my (quite possibly wide of the mark) observations regarding your character.

Crikey! It's a reply of two halves...

First part is correct, i have read a lot of books... i don't see this as a bad thing though and would point you to Bill hicks' response to the waffle waitress who asked him 'Why you reading' if you somehow see this as a personality flaw on my behalf.

Secondly however (you were doing so well too) in line with point one i should enlighten you to the fact that my all time favourite book is 'The God delusion' by richard dawkins so your suggestion about the church is a tad soggy fromn all the water it failed to hold.

Were you bullied though?

Back onto Football for a minute

"Hearts boss Csaba Laszlo today revealed that he hopes to make further moves into the transfer market over the next few days."

"The Tynecastle manager bolstered his squad yesterday with the capture of midfielder Adrian Mrowiec, the Pole arriving after impressing with Kaunas."

"The transfer window slams shut on Monday night and Csaba told Hearts News today that he's still working hard to strengthen his attacking options to supplement the likes of Jamie Mole and Christian Nade."

"The one thing lacking from Hearts' attractive football this season has been goals but Csaba is intent on addressing that issue as quickly as possible."

"I have one more player to come here," he said. "I think we would like to bring in a striker, a striker who can score. But if we don't get the player, its is okay."

Did anyone else notice that the International Rating Agency "Standard and Poor" have dropped the outlook of the UKIO Bankas rating from "Stable" down to "Negative"?.
I'm not aying that anyone should be pressing panic buttons yet, but it is definitely NOT a good sign, and while they may well not be alone in this downrating (I for one don't know)it may be that with them being really a very small bank in today's banking world, it might be another indicator as to why there is no war chest these days, and one seems increasingly unlikely. Can we expect even more Kaunas signings again maybe?

In the grand scheme of things Romanov's bank is a diddy bank. Thing is Chris Robinson had a diddy catering company. I know which I would prefer. Surprised it was rated Stable by S&P. Yes we will have more Kaunas signings. Sad thing is the club has been stabilised. We have Tynecastle, but that's about it. Gonna be season after season of mediocrity while we act as a shop window for Eastern European journeymen that no one else wants. Only light on the horizon is the possibility that some of the guys from the academy come good, like Rapnik, McGowan, Copil, Kostadinov etc.

Back to the goalie storey. I must admit not to being surprised that Kello will keep his place - why not, he has done nothing wrong and we need continuity? The test of who is picking the team will be if he has a howler like Kurskis giving away goals and doesn't get dropped - then we should start worrying.

I say give Chabba time - the football I have seen so far has been decent compared to last season. The goals will come

It's 1 am and Tam stumbles home, swearing as he gets his keys stuck in the door. He walks through the trash strewn across the floor and kicks the mangey looking dog in frustration, "4uckin' dog", he mutters.
"Where have you been?!" screeches his wife Liz, "you've been oot aw 4uckin' day!". He storms across the room and gives her a taste of the back of his hand "Shut it ya $uckin 5unt!". Bleeding and visibly shaken, Liz clutches her pregnant stomach and limps into the bedroom. "$uckin \/hore" mumbles Tam as he wipes Liz's blood on his Rangers top. He sits down in his faux leather couch and takes off his fake burberry cap. He reaches down into the mess beside his seat and produces another bottle of Buckfast, promptly sloshing it over his white shellsuit bottoms. He empties his pockets (a DSS form and a letter from the Crown Prosecution in Manchester) and sticks on his favourite CD: Ian Paisley Sings Orange Order Classics. He spends several hours belting out such Billy Boy classics before standing hand on heart to God Save The Queen. That done, he sits back down and produces a picture Of Elizabeth II and pleasure himself. He leans over and is sick on the dog before passing out in a pool of his own urine.

And this scene is carried out all over Govan following Rangers defeat to Celtic at the weekend. What a wonderful thing, to follow the Mighty Gers!
