PARKSIDE benefited from a 5-1 success on their home leg to score a 7-5 win over Hillside in last night's quarter-final bowls clash in the Edinburgh Cup, writes STEWART MEIKLE.
Home wins for the rinks skipped by Willie Watson and Ian Kay were supported by a peel from Brian Salvona while Alex Hurry clinched the result with his sole success on the away leg.

Watson produced an early run of 1, 1, 5 to lead 9-1 after five end
s then made steady headway to 15-3 before going on to skip Jack Logan, Stevie Kerr and Darren Grant to a 26-9 win over Davy Boyle. Kay added 2, 1 and 4 to lead 9-2 then answered the loss of three singles with a run of 1, 2, 3 and 1 to 16-5 and traded on the cushion to skip Andy Anderson, Ronnie McDougall and Davy Craig Senior to a 17-14 win over BJ Smith.

Salvona skipped Graeme Fraser, Martin Hamilton and Davy Grant into a 15-4 lead that made a hat-trick of home wins look certain but Hillside skip Keith Gallacher came storming back to snatch a 16-16 peel. The spirits of the home camp were lifted by Gary Muir who made a blitz start of 3, 2, 3, 3 and 1 to lead 12-1 then remain on track to skip Keith Adamson, Stevie McManus and Kyle Newall to a 21-10 win over Robert Donaldson.

And more joy for Hillside came in the shape of a 19-8 win for Steven Laidlaw, John Newall, Graeme Ladlaw and Dougie Robinson.

Parkside now needed a win to take them through to the semi-final stage and the saviour of the EBL Division 1 leaders came in the shape of Hurry who carded a mighty 5 to lead 14-8 and went on to skip Tam Hogg, Bobby Hughes and David Moran to a 19-11 win over Peter Brown's rink.

"The form book worked out for us but only by a squeak. The result means doing the league and cup double remains a possibility for us," said a spokesman for Parkside.

Elsewhere, Tanfield beat Maitland 8-4 and Pilrig beat Northern 7-5.
