Hibs 0, Hearts 2 Scorers: Hibs: Hearts: Nade (38), Glen (90)
A FIRST-HALF strike from Christian Nade and another in injury time from Gary Glen sent Hearts through to the next round of the Scottish Cup against ten-man Hibs at Easter Road.

Nade hit home from just eight yards out with 38 minutes of the first-half gone to give Hearts the advantage and they refused to relinquish their advantage.

Hibs had earlier been reduced to ten men when Steven Fletcher was shown a straight red card for a two-footed challenge on Christophe Berra.

Hearts made sure of the victory in the dying seconds when Christos Karipidis played young sub Glen through on goal, he rounded the keeper and slotted into the empty net.

Hibs had first sight of goal when a free-kick was floated into the box from the left and punched out by Hearts keeper Janos Balogh. The ball fell to the feet of Derek Riordan but unfortunately for the Easter Road striker, his shot cannoned off Ruben Palazuelos and away for a corner that came to nothing.

Hearts suddenly broke at the other end, Eggert Jonsson's clever chipped ball eventually finding its way to Deividas Cesnauskis after Rob Jones had failed to halt his progress. The Lithuanian played the ball to David Obua and ran into the box to take the return but his his effort was just inches wide of Yves Ma-Kalambay's right-hand post.

Hibs then claimed for a spot-kick but it looked as though referee Craig Thomson got it spot-on when he waved their shouts away. Christian Nade seemed to be fouled in the middle of the park, but Thomson allowed play to continue and when Sol Bamba played Steven Fletcher through, the Hibs striker went down as Balogh dived to save the ball. It seemed a perfectly-timed save and Thomson agreed.

Hibs were reduced to ten men though with just over half an hour gone when Steven Fletcher was shown a straight red card for a two-footed cvhallenge on Christophe Berra.

The striker had been played through by a cracking piece of vision from Stevenson but a poor touch lost Hibs possession and in his frustration – and an attempt to win the ball back – he charged in recklessley on Berra but all it earned him was an early bath and a suspension for next week's league game against St Mirren.

The visitors made the most of their numerical advantage when they took the lead just before the break – 465 minutes from their last goal.

The goal came when Ma-Kalambay allowed himself to be pulled out wide to chase a ball in from Lee Wallace but the big keeper was never getting there. Andrew Driver did though and cut the ball across the face of goal and Christian Nade, who himself had only scored one previous goal this season, was left with the task ofturning the ball into the net from just inside the six-yard box.

After that steback, Paatelainen made a change at the break, replacing Ma-Kalambay with new signing Grzegorz Szamotulski.

Hearts had the bul of the pressure after the restart, although failed to do too much that seriously tested the replacement keeper.

With 25 left and Hibs still trailing, Paatelainen made a double change, hooking Riordan and Johansson for Colin Nish and Alan O'Brien. As if Riordan's day hadn't been bad enough, the Hibs striker was booked as he left the field for making a rude gesture to the Hearts fans.

Hearts came close to a late second, only for Szamotulski to beat away a powerful effort on the angle from Driver with four minutes remaining.

However the former Dundee United keeper was left to pick the ball out of the back of the net three minutes into stoppage time when Karipidis played the ball into the path of sub Gary Glen and the youngster touched it round the keeper and slotted home into the empty net.

Hibs: Ma-Kalambay; Van Zanten, Hogg, Jones, Murray; Johansson (O'Brien 65), Bamba, *Stevenson, *Rankin; **Fletcher, *Riordan (Nish 65). Unused subs: Yantorno, Chisholm.

Hearts: Balogh; Jonsson, Zaliukas, Berra, Wallace; Cesnauskis, Karipidis, Palazuelos, Driver; Obua (Glen 81), Nade (Stewart 90). Unused subs: Kello, Thomson,

Very quiet indeed a few hobos with headaches possibly??
Not a great Hearts performance but back to basics got the side smoothly playing passing football. Always expect the home team to come in to a match at some stage, never materialised at any stage today from hibs. Hearts will get better and the concistancy is the key for us. We can and will play much better and a team could really be on the end of a rampant Hearts, more so than today. Confidence is such a big thing in football and was delighted with Obua in particular. He needed a good game and he did well in the first half linking play for us. Fell out the game in the 2nd and teed up Glens entrance beautifuly and what a player we have there, the comparisons with Robbo are uncanny and a real gem is Gary Glen.

That Real Madrid target sold the show. I looked into his eyes as he approached the goal. For some reason he looked at the linesman. thought oh , im on side , looked up to find the keeper at his feet saying ta. I think mixu must av been saying " take Berra out the game " He took a few or should i say "brushed off a few weedy challenges from the wee hobbos.

Im gutted today but have to say congratulations to the jambos, much as it pains me. They've been the better team in pretty much all 3 derbies and deserved their win today.

Mixu, must go now. We were ill disciplined today and blaming fletchers sending off is ridiculous. When Killie were reduced to 10 men they still managed to score 2 against us without reply, so why did we struggle so badly when down to ten men? Once you have a player sent off theres no use arguing about it, you just have to rearrange the team accordingly. But he has no idea what he's doing, we need a new manager who understands tactics ASAP and with a couple more players I still think we could challenge for third spot next season but changes need to be made NOW.

Can anyone else beleive mixu's comment that Berra jumped like a brown trout to get fletcher sent off. The guy really does not have a clue and i hope he remains Hibs manager for a while to come, that way we wont need to worry to much about them. Cant wait to see all the daft remarks from the bitter Hibbys in 2morrows paper.

14,837 at the game - it has to be said that once again the hibs' fans let their team down badly.

And talking of letting their team down. Riordan - classy guy - not! Then Mixu - chose not to shake hands with Csaba at full time - another classy guy - not!

After calming down and fielding the abusive / sympathetic phone calls, a few thoughts :

Hibs are a poor side - only Jones, Bamba and Stevenson gave anything like enough.
Hearts are no more than workmanlike - they have no flair. Glen has raw ability and pace and is their best hope.
The sending off was harsh but both Fletch and Riordan show too much niggly behaviour and it gets in both of their development.
I do not see much hope for the rest of this season - 3rd place is a dream for both these teams. DUFC can pass, move and beat them at their ease.
The Hibs Board have to look at Mixu and make some balanced decisions. One year on has anything improved ? on the pitch ? financially ? medium term potential ? I think no to all three and thus it is very questionable if he is the best long term bet. However, will the Board back him (or anyone else) with some money ? or do we evidence our ambition by staying as we are ?
Saddest sight of the day - Pat Stanton doing the draw after the game. He looked gutted and it has ruined my day too.
Well done to Hearts but be realistic in your gloating - if you finish third and / or reach cup final, I will parade naked down Princess Street.

#5. Well hopefully a fair number of people will see the high-lights on BBC later this evening and make up their own minds.

Fletcher could easily have broken Berra's legs, but as I mentioned in the above post, Mixu is definately someone who does not have the character or class to admit that the referee made justified decision.
10

neil1986,

11/01/2009 19:40:54
#8 Agree, we are poor but I think we are actually in a similar position to hearts last season, decent side with potential that needs a good coach to come in with 2 or 3 better than average players and we can be a succesful side. I know it sounds crazy after the last few results but a good manager can change a side dramatically and altho we dont have the quality like under mowbray, i think we have the makings of a solid team.
11

they aint won the cup since 1902,

11/01/2009 19:42:06
Why is Mixu still playing 3 up front. Hearts totaly over ran the midfield yet again. 5 against 3 in midfield theres only ever going to be one winner. JJ is 5h1te and too slow to play wide . Riorend is just like a wee laddie in a huff, fletcher over rated. Mixu must stay. Only tactic was to try and take Berra out the game with shocking chellenges.
12

Jam Tarts 1874,

On the Rebound 11/01/2009 19:42:41
#8. I can see your bitterness shining like a huge green beacon of envy across the UK. lol!

Hearts were the only team to play any football today, as it was at Tynecastle last week also. hibs only tactic in each of these last two games has been to hoof the ball in the direction of Fletcher and Riordan and hope for the best. If Fletcher had scored in the only chance you created it would have been a travesty as Fletcher was clearly offside.
13

Cardiff Hibs,

11/01/2009 19:43:40
#9 and #5 , you are wrong. The replays are conclusive : his trailing leg is grounded and his kicking leg hits Berra on the ankle / base of his shin pad. Ill timed - yes, niggly - yes but not a leg breaker. Disappointed by Mixu's reaction - hiding from his own failings - but was Berra really hurt. I think he has been watching some of his Lithuanian pals for too long. Biggest gripe is why was the linesman not consulted - big decision, big match, worth at least asking ? No excuse for bad tackle but when Hamilton goalie gets no card for handling outside box and denying clear cut goal scoring chance and Fletch's (first) tackle is straight red , are we consistent ?

Ah well, another billion years to go.
Up until the point Fletch got done for what I think was a yellow it could have gone to anyone.
Poor show from Hibs after that I feel.
Riordan - waste of space, embarrassing.
Mixu - lack of experience, bye-bye. GTF.
Well done Yaks, see if you can win it.

Jam Tarts 1874, no bitterness mate, life is too short.
Disappointment and frustration , oh aye, plenty of that - welcome to the delights of being a die hard Hibee lifer. Would always choose that over being an in-bred, dullard like yourself who "thinks" your team can play football. They are merely marginally less mince than we are on the pitch.

The ref - was a disgrace / we were playing against him and the west stand linesman !!

Mixu - must go tho !!! our tactics are non existent
and i cant wait until hibs hire an experienced manager and oh a goalie would be nice !!

well done to the jambos tho

#17 I think the fact we are (only) 5 points behind is quite incredible to be honest but it shows that if we can stay that close with someone as incompetent as mixu in charge, there must be hope for us!

My worry is even if mixu was sacked 2moro, a new guy has to come in and shape his own team, gettin rid of the duds brought in by his predecessor (much as mixu has been doing with collins' team, morais and gathussi being recent examples). This can take a long time and lets face it, mixu has left us with a few stinkers and without moving players on, it can be hard to bring others in.

PAZUZU.... Good honest post for a change. . . Interesting to see m Stewart dropped today especially with Bruno and Kingston not playing. Personally i never saw much of the first goal. I was 4 rows from the front directly behind the goal. Was surprised to see ref show red on the Real Madrid guy. Still cant believe his miss. If he never looked at the Linesman he would have scored. That was the 2 turning points for me. Looking forward to the highlites- My mate said he could see me going nuts on sky tv on both goals.

So are you.

All Jambos are a bunch of w@*kers, and so are those referees (such as today's ref) who support them.

All I ask for is fairness so that Hibs and Hearts can have equal bragging rights, yet there is no chance of today's referees allow that to happen.
23

mon-the-hertz,

Glasgow - Southside 11/01/2009 20:05:52
I'm sure I'm not viewing this through maroon tinted glasses but I can't see how anyone can dispute that Fletcher's challenge didn't warrant a red card. Have some sympathy with the lad as it was undoubtedly a rash and frustrated challenge but it really could have caused some damage, and folk get sent off for a lot less these days (#15 no need to consult the linesman on such a matter at all)
Mixu's comments are undignified and show a real lack of maturity, experience and class which is also what some hibees I know think are traits of his management.
His gripe should be with his own player who potentially cost his side the game.
Personally for Hearts a great result without playing particularly good football and Glen rounding off the game with that finish and celebration reminded us all of Fozzy which is always special.
Fakirk at home could be tricky but we should have the strength to get through.
#4 well done for coming on here, it's not easy after a defeat

In hindsight bringing in Pat Stanton to make the cup draw was as smart an idea as parading the wee cup at a derby match. Both were ill-conceived and back-fired spectacularly. Whoever runs PR at the Leith San Siro should catch the same taxi as the one that's on its way for Fletcher and Jones. Please extend Mixu contract now though it was poor form for someone who looks like a cod to call someone a trout.

BazJT,

Re. Fletcher - at best it was a bad challenge, at worst it could have done some serious damage as Berras studs were firmly in the grass when the 'tackle' went in. I've seen reds given for a lot less so get over it.

I'd like to point out that Hibs were lucky at that point to still have 11 men on the pitch anyway. I couldn't see who it was, possibly Stephenson, with a shocking two footed challenge 5 minutes earlier.

Take it on the chin hibbies. Mixus tactics were clearly to try and kick us off the park, in times past Hearts players would have responded but credit to them they just got on with the game.

Can't believe Hibs are complaining about the ref ! He let a lot go and also spoke to Hibs players before being forced into producing yellow cards. Didn't see any Hearts players getting spoken to, just carded.

I thought it was a red card on first look but looking at other angles it was not so bad,It was still a wild challange and the ref saw intent there I think.I can hardly beleive we go the shout for a change.Good gaol by Glen lets hope hes learned to get on with career and buckle down now.He has the goal poachers look about him and you can tell just by the way he gets his body into the right angles he will score for fun.

Just seen a playback of the game here in sunny Florida. Bring on the Bairns! Conditions looked a bit tricky today but the Jambos adapted to them far better than the Wee Team - played them off the park 2nd half. Zalukus owes Balogh for his sloppy play to allow the Really Im Dire (sorry the Real Madrid) target in on goal, but great reactions from Balogh to prevent a certain goal which could have change the outcome of the whole match! From his angle the Referee had no option but to send off the RID striker for his rash tackle as it looked like an ankle breaker. Thought Obua was poor thoughout the first half but settled a bit better into the match in the 2nd half. My man of the match would be between Jonsson & Karipidis - both were immense throughout the game. Gary Glen also now deserves his chance from the start. And what about Deek Riorend - should be fined and banned for at least a month for his antics. Mizoo Putalinon couldn't even shake Csaba's hand at the end of the match. Bad Sportmanship. As the Wee Team song goes - Sick to the teeth, no trophy in Leith, Sorrow! Sorrow!

Hoi - Hibees. It's us who has the monopoly on referee conspiracies so sit down shut up with that mince. Could easily have sent off Rearend for foul on Ruben soon after (hack and elbow) and if he'd at least been booked then he would have been off after gesturing to the Hearts end. Fudd.

A scrappy game, in grim weather, played at typical high tempo and one we deserved to win. Fair play to some of the Hibees here who can see past blaming the sending off, though hope your manager learns some manners as totally out of order claiming Berra had dived and stomping off in the cream puff at final whistle (after FIVE minutes of injury time???). He should have watched Rooney, Ballack et al in action for some proper diving.

Good to see Obua finally seems to be coming to grips with Scottish fitba but still looks a bit lost. Zali, Berra, Zali, Wallace, Jonsson and Karipidis all played well, and Glen's finish was the icing on the cake, though shame most of the Hibees missed it as they had given up hope already.

Bamba again their MoM and Jones fairly handy, but other than that it's not looking good for that lot.

RIP FFF

p.s. Anybody stay on to catch Charlie Nicholas' comment that Scottish football is looking sick - hope he saw Wigan-Spurs as that was utter mince, and they didn't have excuse of a shoddy pitch, hurricane winds and driving rain. We aren't the finished article by any stretch of the imagination but with a very good young core of a team. HHGH

Frankly they were both mince. Dont know if it was the weather or what but ive seen better stuff at the park - and incidentally, less dummy spitting. Both Riordan and Mixu let themselves down big time - Fletcher missed a sitter before he got himself ordered off - or made it easy for the ref to do so - thought Sol Bambas tackle ealier was worse mind you. If Hibs hadnt gifted Hertz the ordering off and the goal of course it would have been a different game but they didnt and it wasnt so hey enjoy it while it lasts - we never thought we were going to win the bloody thing anyway. After watching them try for all of my 45 years supporting them you get a sense of inevitability.

Riordan needs to take a good look at himself - as does Mixu, makalamity, van zanten, Rankin, - only pass marks today were for Murray, Bamba and Stevenson - what was wrong with Deano playing ?- least the Hearts fans could have got a nice big fine for their club for some sick chant or other.

A poor decision by a nervous referee effectively put the game beyond Hibs...but Hearts really did make hard work of it.

What a disaster.... Has anyone told this bunch of so called Hibs players, and Management, that there are people in SCotland who pay good money to go and watch this, people throughout the world that sit up all night to watch it?????????

The game yesterday was pathetic, i'm not decrying Hearts win here, but let's be honest lads, neither team are any good... Must admit i have not seen much of Hibs of late, but last night was disgraceful, my old school team played better than that. Mixu has prooved he has not got a clue, he is way out of his depth and Hibs must get rid of him now, if we don't we will be saddled with the same rubbish this time next year, he's had long enough to proove what he can do and he's proven he can do nothing, hard to believe when Tony Mowbray was there we had such a good team full of promising young Scottish players, now we are buying old 31 - 33 year old foreigners!!, Van Zanten is a waste of space, as is O'Brien, as is Shiels, as is Riordan, gee whiz i could go on!!!!!!

Petrie wake up now, get Mixu out of the way, get a new man in who cann asses the squad before he gets some money to re-build it in the summer, and oh aye before i go, i wonder what Mixu thought about Morais banging in two goals on debut for Inverness, when the fellow can't get a game for Hibs!!!!

Unless something drastic changes soon at Easter Road, we're in for the same lot of boring mindless hoof ball that i witnessed last night, if Mixu had any idea of what he is doing, he would walk into Petrie's office today and resign and admit he has no idea!!!!!

Get rid of Mixu now, get an experianced man in and let him sort out the rubbish, and give him time to find replacements that he can buy over the summer, and give him some money to do it!!!!!!

Three or four years ago, Hibs had a young team, full of potential and promise, now what do we have???? complete rubbish, Only Jones, Rankin, Stevenson and Bamba should any clue as to what they should do, Nish is a good player

ozdon,

#86, not sure if the best team won, had Fletcher not been sent off every chance it could have finished a dull and boring nil nil draw.

After Fletcher missed his chance i had the feeling Hibs were never going to score, and until Fletcher was sent off your lot didn't even want to try and score, so Fletcher going off made a huge difference,

Riordan in Australia, maybe the heat would help the boy, we should be willing to try anything, his gesture at the end should be enough for any manager worth their job to ban the boy for a month or so.

That would never have happened in the days of Jackie McNamara, or Pat Stanton, those were captains who controlled thier team, Riordan runs around the centre circle and achieves nothing, a waste of a jumper in my view

Firstly (clearing lump from back of throat), well done to the yams on a well deserved victory. Frankly, you're not great but you well and truly pumped us today. Well done.

Now then......

I cannot believe that I have had to make the above comment. Make no mistake, I've seen the Hibs taking some tonkings by the Yams down the years but I've always bounced back. This time - No. I've scarely left Easter road feeling so negative about MY team.

The bottom line is that the current manager has NO idea. His game plan was non-existent and from what I gather, his post match analysis was an embarassment. This clown MUST BE SACKED NOW. I've been saying this for months, have been shot down in flames, but I would dare any supported of Hibernian Football Club to defend this idiot. I'll say again - SACK HIM NOW.

I can't be @rsed going into todays lack of performance in depth, but my last comment will be that I will not renew my season ticket unless this blubbering fool is removed. I'm not the only one and I will not apologise for this. Loyalty is one thing, and I have been loyal down the years, but I will not have the pi55 taken out of me.

Fletcher's reckless challenge was born out of frustration when he failed to properly control what could have led to a goal.

We can have no complaints with the referee's albeit marginal red card decision.

If MIxu is blaming the ref for our deffeat then all he is doing really is deflecting blame from himself.

What we CAN complain about though is what we mistakenly refer to as 'Mixu's tactics" which amount to no more than a hopeful punt up the park, with no real confidence of ever retaining possession.

I've been around for a long time and yes, I've seen worse from the Hibs, but not much worse, and there was always the expectation then that something would be done to corret the situation.

I'm just not sure our current leadership think that way though.

Bamba, Murray, Stevenson,Jones and Hogg can hold their heads up, the rest should stay indoors for a few days.

Cannae believe the reaction of hobo pundits and fans , Nevin was a total c*ck on sportscene saying the standard of play from both teams was poor just to mask the inadequacies of his own team , the weather had a big part to play in that game the day and hearts adapted to the conditions better than hibs end of , that was a fine win for the jambos in testing conditions and had it been dry conditions then the scoreline could have reached double figures for the famous maroon , ,,

#100 "A more experienced ref could have assessed the situation more accurately."

He's on the FIFA listings - what more do you want?

Teams going to 10 often give that bit extra e.g Killie a fews ago or ourselves at ER a few seasons ago when we came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with 10 men. Hibs I'm afraid following the lead of their manager wasted all their energy niggling and complaining for the rest of the game. Fletcher gave the ref no option - both feet off the ground and it's off you go - intent or none.

Let's hope this will kick start our season again and Glen must get more starts.

Yup, agree that Riordan hasn't been great. However, we all know that the guys got talent in abundance and that it just requires a decent manager to harness that. Mixu isn't a decent manager, in fact - he's barely a manager.

But on a serious note, when the Hobos won it in 1902 it was probably paraded by means of Horse and Cart and nobody had heard of Mr.Hovis or Mr.Warburton

Which of the following do you think will happen first?

a) Mixu will say we fully deserved our 207th consecutive derby win.
b) Hearts go into administration for the 16th time in a week and cease to exist.
c) The victorious Hibs Scottish Cup Squad will have an open top spaceship parade above Lochend.
d) The world will end before any of the above occur.

Well done Hearts for keeping the heid in tough conditions i.e. gales, poor playing surface and flying boots.
Wee Gee-Gee deserves to be starting from now on as he has re-vitalised the team in vital games when the team looked like flagging. Not only is he a positive, direct player and cool headed in front of goal...he can behave too.
Which is more than can be said for half the 'hibz' team including the 'manager'. Looks like reerdin is slipping back into his old ways again. What a MORON! Doesn't he realise the impact he has on all those young impressionable fans watching and idolising his every move?

I suspect though anyone who idolises that idiot is beyond saving.

Nuff said about those losers.

I think we can really build on this result. Nade has been working harder in recent weeks (which is more than can be said for Larry K) and the team as a whole look like they are really working for one-another. If we can carry this attitude over into our home games then we will be playing European football next season.

Well done Hearts. Keep it up!

Brasso sales are up around Tynecastle.Prematurely

Still, you can always have a wee swig of it when there's nothing to polish at the end of the season (again)

Congrats to HMFC and their supporters.

So the Hibs quest for the Holy Grail continues, I think they are better just renting the DVD.

Had the match down for a draw, but glad to see the HMFC go through.

Hibs had better find a manager or they they will be looking at a relegation fight if Mixu is still there.

Gers to beat the Saints 2-0 Tuesday.

Not against the Hibs it wont. Or let me rephrase that, as long as Mixu is in charge there is very little to fear.

WGS has no replacement for Boruc. Wide open there.

Mark my words. When Rangers win the SPL, WGS will be forced to admit he didn't get it right.

Hopefully all the disguised seats who left The 'Methadone' early saw the class second that Horsey scored on the highlights. Just think as well, we haven't scored for 90 seconds of football now............
