Hibs 0 - 2 Celtic: Hibs fail to take their chances to punish Celtic

MIXU Paatelainen tasted defeat for only the second time as Hibs manager as SPL champions Celtic kept up the presssure on leaders Rangers with a 2-0 win at Easter Road, bringing the Edinburgh side's run of four successive victories to an end.
It was Celtic's first win in three attempts at the Edinburgh ground although Hibs would be kicking themselves for failing to test Celtic's nerve by taking one of the three first-half chances to open the scoring and so test their visitors' nerve.

Defender Lee Naylor broke the deadlock after 64 minutes before substitute Georgios Samaras doubled Celtic's lead as he headed home Aiden McGeady's cross ten minutes later.

After weathering an early Celtic onslaught Hibs passed up a glorious opportunity to open the scoring in what was virtually their first attack of the game, strikers Colin Nish and Steven Fletcher combining to leave John Rankin with a free run in on goalkeeper Artur Boruc.

But as Rankin cut in from the right Boruc, the villain of the piece when Celtic lost at Easter Road in September, stood his ground, blocking the midfielder's shot with his legs. Rankin took the resulting corner, puttng the ball beyond the back post for Ian Murray to nod it back across goal. Celtic skipper Stephen McManus headed it clear only to see the ball drop at the feet of Abdel Zarabi. Unfortunately the Algergian internationalist couldn't get full power on his shot which was taken off the line by Naylor.

Hibs did have the ball in the net in the ninth minute as Nish got his head to Rankin's free-kick only to see the offside flag raised against him.

Hibs were dealt a blow in the 16th minute when influential French star Guillaume Beuzelin, who had been left limping heavily after a tussle with Aiden McGeady, was forced to quit, his place taken by Ross Chisholm.

Celtic striker Scott McDonald went down looking for a penalty under the challenge of Zarabi but to no avail before Scott Brown reacted angrily to the presence of the left-back as he got off a low shot which was easily held by Andy McNeil who, despite the Glasgow side's possession had hardly been troubled in the opening 45 minutes.

Indeed, Hibs had another chance to take the lead when Martin Canning got his head to Brian Kerr's corner only to glance the ball wide when, he himself would admit, he should have found the target. The Celtic fans behind Boruc's goal were becoming anxious and their nerves weren't helped by a low ball from Rankin which flashed across the danger area with no Hibs player able to cash in.

Former Hibs star Scott Brown was presented with a terrific chance to open the scoring for Celtic three minutes after the restart when Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink cut the ball back into his path but he was too casual with his shot which was cleared by Canning.

At the other end Nish went close with an angled drive which beat the outstrechted right hand of the diving Boruc only to fly inches wide of the far post.

A moment's hesitation in the Hibs defence gave Brown a sight of goal but McNeil was well positioned to deal with his low shot. The momentum was beginning to swing in Celtic's direction but, again, Gordon Strachan's side found themselves struggling to create worthwhile openings, Massimo Donati and McGeady both resorting to long-range efforts which flew high over McNeil's bar.

But Celtic made the pressure tell to devastating effect in the 63rd minute when Naylor was allowed to run half the length of the pitch unchallenged before enjoying a huge slice of luck when his pass, intended for McDonald, was blocked, the ball falling kindly for him to lash it beyond the helpless McNeil.

Brown had the chance to double Celtic's lead but McNeil superbly beat away his rising effort. But substitute Samaras, who had only been on the pitch two minutes, rose to nod home McGeady's pinpoint cross in the 74th minute, leaving Hibs with an uphill battle to even salvage a point.

But Canning went close to throwing Hibs a lifeline as he met Rankin's corner only to see his header crash off the crossbaar.

Hibs: McNeil, Gathuessi, Hogg, Canning, Zarabi, Kerr (Zemmama 74), Beuzelin (Chisholm 16), Murray, Rankin, Nish, Fletcher. Subs not used: Grof, Morais, Campbell, Hanlon.

Celtic: Boruc, Hinkel, Caldwell, McManus, Naylor, Nakamura (Robson 85), S Brown, Donati (Hartley 82), McGeady, Venegoor of Hesslink (Samaras 72), McDonald, Subs not used: M Brown, O'Dea, Sno, Riordan.

Referee: Iain Brines.

I see the wee ginger whinger is at it again ,shouting about his goalkeeper getting booked and why .He was booked for gesticulating to the hibs fans ,this guy is an -rsehole and can only make his team look bad .Strachan should be punishing him instead of backing him up and making himself look even more stupid than he already is.

#15 - Not exactly, no.

He walked the length of the east stand, waving, punching the air, etc. His own players tried to drag him away but he kept going. He then turned round and CLEARLY gave the punters in the east stand the w@nkers sign, before being dragged away.

This guy is is just a total halfwit. Obviously still upset from the pounding he took from the Hibbies for his retarded performance last time, he thought he'd have a wee laugh, only succeeding in making himself look like a total fud and hopefully, finally, getting some recognition from the SPL's disciplinary committee.

But you obviously think his conduct is acceptable. And you'll also probably condone the away supports (not insubstantial) pro-IRA singing. Which, by the way, was in evidence again today.

#16 calmm down my man..you may hate boruc..and there is an argument that there should be no characters in football..setanta in an attempt to create "controversy" showed boruc ..and no rude gestures were seen..and a wave and a smile and even a shocking rude gesture is small beer compaired to some of the tackles going in near the end of the game by frustrated hibs players.. but hey they better have got that out their system because i dont think theyll get away with the old fashioned "the first 2 kicks are free" in the cup game !!!

#18 - Hate's a strong word. I don't know the man so I can't hate him.

Re-read my post. I don't say I hate him. I said that he's a fud. His actions were not that of a 'character', but of a fud. He did the same sort of thing last time at ER and was warned at half time by the polis match commander that he would face criminal charges if his behaviour continued.

And I'm sorry that the Setanta camera's missed the worst of his performance. There's plenty in the ground that didn't though.

#2 Dinnae start that pish! It's hard enough being a Jambo without giving folk a reason to call us mini-huns.

#28 - how dare you condone the best fans in the world.

With regards to Boruc, he's a fud to all the fans outside Celtic, but this whole 'could have incited a riot' stuff which comes out just makes football fans look like a bunch of muppets. I'd be happier if players did more to antagonise the crowd, it gets the atmosphere going and sets them up for a downfall (a la Easter Rd the last time).
34

sonofcosmos,

glasgow 01/03/2008 20:25:18
#28..dont think i said it was ok....
#33 a fair summary of boruc who as well as his talent as a goalkeeper becomes more loved by celtic fans the more the media the rangers and everyone else "hate" him..and your last point is mine...gee that player we have been shouting abuse at for 90 minutes has made a rude gesture..that could start a riot..someone contact the polis x d'oh
35

penicuik 01/03/2008 20:35:49
34- not singling out this incident, however i am tired of hearing how rangers and celtic clubs have stamped out this garbage. every game i have witnessed with rangers involved has had their usual party songs sung by more than a minority. there again, it may be that they are "allowed" these particularly offensive ditties.
to repeat, ignorance -on both divides - is an embarrassment for this country

Final word on the Boruc yad.

All I'm looking for is players to act with some dignity. Caldwell took pelters today - behaved. Broony took some - reacted very well, ended up enjoying some banter. Boruc took it too far and lands himself in the headlines again. The man's an erse. End of.

Didn't see the Hibs-Celtic match.

Was it so enthralling that it requires two threads of match reports to do it justice?

Sadly, I see Boruc is an issue here too. I've deserted the "Lennoxtown" thread because it's heading in its usual Saturday night direction, and turning a little poisonous IMO.

Nobody want to discuss football, as in players kicking the wee round thing?

Thought hibs played well in the fist half, However only recently hibs fans were shouting about the ammount of posession they had.Notice in the second half it was Tims 80% hibs 20% Still playing hoofball and no ammount of silky football will win games without scoring goals.

Well Hibernian FC, have to take a good look at themselves. What has happened to the team that for several years was called "The best footballing side in the SPL"?

I was a bit shocked at their roughhouse tactics today. If this was a Champions League match Hibs would have had at least 4 players ordered off.

The wild kicks at Aiden in the first half were a disgrace. Then Naka beat a guy down the wing only to be forearm smashed in the neck and then bundled onto the touchline.

I've not even started on the treatment Brown and McD received - both kicked to bits all day long.

So we witnessed a brutual X Certificate Hibs today and yet hardly a booking. Meanwhile Boruc gets booked for waving, McD gets booked for moaning (about being hacked down all day, Be honest who wouldn't moan about that?)

Let's see if Hibs play this way next week at Ibrox and if they do let's see how many get booked/sent off.

Today was not just a victory for Celtic, it was victory for football. Today we saw a Celtic team of talented skilful players overcome brute force and cynical violence.

Hibernian, you are a disgrace.

Celtic you are a credit to the game, humanity and an inspiration to all within and outside the beautiful football.

God Bless Celtic FC.

I just can't have a pop at the hobos for getting beat by the tic when they looked like they deserved something from the game.

Until the 67th minute when a right footed shot from nayls screaming in seemed to crush their spirit, hibs were doing alright.

It was a cruel blow for mixu p ....you have to give him credit for organising his cut price team ... before today's match mixu's record with te hobobs was:

5 wins
2 draws
and 1 defeat against the mighty JTs....

I can just imagine that Mixu was starting to imagine that it was going to be 6 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat against the mighty JTs....can you imagine?

Boruc's jest-ure of waving like the queen didn't seem like enough to warrant a yellow card...what was that all about?

What was more offensive was watching 2 teams dressed in green....not because the colour...just because it was hard to tell the difference - is it just me?

Top six for both teams looks very likely which is great for more derby misery for the hobos....bring it on.
