Published Date: 25 July 2008
RYAN McGOWAN today proclaimed Hearts as Scotland's leading club for youth development after he and academy colleague Steven Husband both finalised long-term contract extensions.
At the team's pre-season base here in Germany, McGowan completed a new five-year deal with Husband signing for a further three years. The players are now tied to Tynecastle until 2013 and 2011 respectively.

McGowan's contract was agreed back in Ap
ril but is only now taking effect, providing vital security for the young Australian as he attempts to impress himself upon the first team. He made his debut in the final match of the season, a 1-0 defeat by Gretna at Fir Park, and is keen for greater exposure at the top level over the coming months.

Having watched academy products such as Christophe Berra, Andy Driver, Lee Wallace and Calum Elliot emerge as first-team regulars in recent seasons, the versatile defender believes Hearts' commitment to rearing their own players cannot be matched by any other SPL club.

"I would say yes, we are the club which plays the most young players," said McGowan, speaking exclusively to the Evening News on the day of Hearts' new home kit launch. "Considering the stature of the club, we have tended to bring the majority of our players through the youth system. As a young player, that's what you look for. You want to know the club will give you that chance if you do well.

"It's good to see others like Christophe and Andy Driver happy to stay on. The club is looking more towards the younger players, which is always a good thing in my position. Those two are probably the two biggest influences on us because they've gone on to do so well. There was speculation recently about them going to England and that's all you can look for as a young player. It just shows you what you can achieve if you follow that sort of path into the first team.

"My contract was agreed back in April and was pretty much done and dusted, it's just taking effect now. I'm happy here and the club was happy to extend my contract so it was really just a matter of where to sign. It gives me a bit of security and confidence that the club see me as a player for the future.

"I hope just to be more involved this season and push myself in. Hopefully I'll get more chances, maybe coming off the bench or even starting later on in the season. I just want to keep progressing as a player and try to force the new manager to play me." Husband explained his delight at securing a new deal despite not having appeared competitively for the first team.

"Last year was only my second year with Hearts and now I have another three years, so I'm really happy," he said. "I came from Cowdenbeath and to be told you're going with the first-team on a pre-season tour of Germany was crazy. The contract just tops it off."

Csaba Laszlo, the Hearts manager, added: "I am absolutely delighted that both players are staying at Hearts with us. I've said all along that the academy is the most important part of our club. We must see the best young players make the breakthrough. Both Ryan and Steven have done well on our trip in Germany and I am looking forward to seeing them make more progress in the season ahead."

Meanwhile, Calum Elliot's talks with MK Dons have stalled and the player has returned to Edinburgh. Inverness Caledonian Thistle remain interested in taking him north on a season-long loan.

With all due respect you have absolutely nothing to say here today after that pathetic performnce your hopelessly inept and amature looking gang of hoofball huddies served up last night... Methinks you should be looking at your own problems before commenting on things you have no knowledge of...

What thirty million would this be?... Can't think of anything to do with hearts that equates to thirty million?

New signings... One pending work permit and more on trial... Who have Hibs signed?... Who will they be able to sign with Petrie's £1500 a week?

You are seriously deluded mate and your team are staring at relegation.

Duns,

7-0? You have to go back to the seventies to find something to say about hearts! that is the saddest thing i have ever seen a football fan reduced to!

How about 6-0 LAST NIGHT.

5-1,4-2,4-0, 4-1, 4-0 and beating you 2-0 without even scoring a goal! because you's scored them for us? Or how about throwing away a 4-2 lead in 91 minutes to draw 4-4?

How about not selling all your tickets for the biggest ever derby?

How about 22 derbies in a row?

How about parading the Disney Cup after being beaten by hearts at easter road?

How about Hartley's hat-trick against a team that thought he was not good enough?

How about hibs being relegated in the same season we beat rangers in the Scottish Cup final?

How about two Scottish cups in ten years?

How about second place?

All these things have happened since the 0-7... You are a bit of a joke club and you should try and actually achieve something else at some point so that you have something else worth mentioning other than a game from 30 years ago.

Hi Iain Bhern,

I don't get along to very many reserve games actually to be honest mate... think the last one was the East of Scotland shield final at tynie when you beat us about 4 years ago.

I cannot make to much of a proclaimation about these guys for that reason but some of the guys on here go to a few of the reserve games and McGowan has been praised very highly.

Australian defender and U19 captain... think Slim brought him over at the same time as Park.

Might be Talk o' the Toun who sees the reserves a lot, can't remember but i am sure they will answer your questions. :o)
33

GrahamL,

#29 McGowan is one of our best young players - U-19 captain and our player of the year last season. Played once towards the end of last season, seems set for a few more first team appearances next year.
Husband, I must admit, hasn't registered on my radar at all. Maybe someone out there knows a bit about the boy?

I probably saw them both in the last East Of Scotland game a couple of months ago but when you don't see players regularly it's not easy to keep tabs on who they are and how good they are. Have to say that at the time I didn't see any Hearts players who weren't up to scratch although some stood out more than others, but again trying to remember names.......!

#29 Maybe not the best game to judge, but at the Dunfermline game last week McGowan was woeful and was subbed off at half time. Husband came on in the second half and looked quite lively for the brief time he was on the pitch. In fact, he almost scored but the Dunfermline goalie pulled off a cracking save.

iain B. well done for attempting a constructive post.

McGowan is a real prospect.Central defender but Hearts u19 manager thinks better midfielder. Played 1st half v PARS unfortunatly had a howler in midfield.
HUSBAND is a strong attacking midfielder(hearts signed from cowden).Saw him for reserves v celtic & rangers last season/came on against the Pars.Looks a prospect.
Rapnik (as well as Glen) Slovakia under 17 captain is another great prospect. Quick/good passer & tackler but IMO(humble) may lack a bit height.
Several more good prospects(COPIL a standout v Penicuik Juniors last week)

Apologies for long winded response.

"Scotland's leading club for youth development after he and academy colleague Steven Husband both finalised long-term contract extensions."

It doesn't say they are all scottish but about half of them are and they are all products of our youth set up.

Berra- Scottish, Wallace- Scottish, Elliot- Scottish, Glen- Scottish, Thomson- Scottish, Robinson- Scottish, Driver- English, McGowan- Australian, Jonsson- Icelandic, Mole- English.

This season we will prob see...

Templeton- Scottish, Rapnik- Slovakian, Copil- Romanian, Husband- Scottish and there are others.

47

Mr Majestic,

25/07/2008 16:54:17

Berra, Wallace, elliot, Driver and Jonsson all were and then Glen and Thomson were after the split.

This season Glen will be, possibly McDonald (goalie who was at QOS), Templeton, McGowan and Husband too... Copil and rapnik will be there or there abouts too.

Talk o' the Toun,

25/07/2008 17:12:12
#50 what do you base your opinion on?

My opinion based on regularly watching them(gives me a bit of an advantage!)
Wallace: good player but needs some serious coaching re getting closer to his player/stopping crosses/sprint coaching.
Elliot: decent player/bad attitude
Driver: good player
Glen: excellent prospect
McDonald: back up only
Templeton: good prospect but a bit on the light side
MCGowan: excellent prospet
Husband: only saw him 3 times. Looks OK
Copil: if grows up will be top player
Rapnik: Will be a top player

Plenty others. NB at end of last season both Hearts & rangers played their 19's in Reserve game(3-3) My totally unbiased opinion was that Hearts had the better players.

Oh I get it.

You want to keep it to Hibs and Hertz fans because you think you have some upper hand just because Hibs got hammered.

My comment was simple. Hibs are better or about the same level as Hertz. But I'll stop there. Why? Because I understand you don't want to face a brutual truth that your daft wee team is nothing short of woeful and have been for a number of years.

Don't throw stones in glass houses muppetheid and you'll not get some back.

Hertz are mince and you know they are. Most Hibs fans don't want to engage because they have just been hammered.

So in effect you, muppetheid have been exposed. All you are interested in doing is picking on the weak and vulnerable. Probably because it makes you feel superior.

Truth is you are a womble. A lowlife. Someone who jumps on here with nothing to say other than make snide remarks to the vulnerable, in this case the Hibs fans. Well I hope this is a little dose of your own medicine and away and lick your wounds muppetheid!

Fantastic verbal diarrhoea from a highly opinionated plank who obviously took a long time to think it out. I have not (what was it you said) "picked on the weak and vulnerable." I do not engage in that. If you had the intelligence to grasp the former comments you would see that I simly responded to a misguided Hibs fan who averred that we had been "humped" by a very good German team, that is all. Nothing more or less. And I don't hold that fellow any grudges - the same cannot, apparently, be said for you.

So, now that you have revealed yourself for the complete abusive name-caller you are, go back to you own forums and spread your rubbish there. You are totally not worth striking up a dialogue with because obviously, as previously stated, there is not much intelligence there.

Intelligence? The irony in your doubts is somewhat amusing to say the least.

Almost as hilarious as the assumption that you can measure one's intelligence simply by exchanges on a

How is Ayrshire these days for village idiots? Is there more where you come from?
