Goncalves: Row did not make me want to leave

Published Date: 10 March 2008
PORTUGUESE defender Jose Goncalves today insisted he never considered quitting Hearts, despite his disciplinary row.
The 22-year-old former FC Thun player was dropped for the game against Inverness last month by interim head coach Stephen Frail after breaking club rules.

The player had stormed out of Tynecastle before the end of the previous match against Rangers in frustration at both his own performance and that of the team as a whole.

After being told that he would not be part of the squad for the match in Inverness, Goncalves was spotted at Edinburgh airport preparing to board a flight, prompting rumours that he was ready to walk out on the Jambos.

However he insisted that thought never crossed his mind and said: "I was always here, I never thought about leaving the club. I was just over in Switzerland for the weekend. I am glad to put it all behind me and, in truth, I was always fine. I took instructions from the manager and so I went home to relax and to visit my family.

"I was in Switzerland visiting my family last weekend and I was there again at the weekend there because we were given a few days off."

Branimir Kostadinov, meanwhile, could be on the verge of a move to Manchester City. The Bulgarian forward will spend two days training with the Premiership side, with the Blues having the option to extend his stint with them to a week if they are suitably impressed. Kostadinov, who has just turned 19, is expected to team up with the likes of Emile Mpenza, Micah Richards and Benjani when Sven Goran Eriksson's side report for training today.

The forward signed for Hearts from Linz in 2006. He made only a handful of appearances in the top team and none in competitive matches, scoring just once, against Cloppenburg during the club's pre-season tour of Germany.

Kostadinov too? This is really beginning to stink. Branny is supoosedly one of our best prospects, yet is on the verge of being sold without even getting a game in the first team?

The fact that it is Man City who are interested suggest that the lad really is decent and the thought of selling him without even getting into our top team for a season or two is a clear indication of Vlads short term plan for Hearts. If I had any faith left, it would have been lost on this announcement.

Ach, don't worry lads. If Branny does get sold, then it's obviously a sign that we have a new manager in place - who can't be named yet as he's still under contract with another club - but who, nevertheless, is looking at the players in the squad and deciding who he wants rid of. Clearly this unnamed man doesn't fancy the look of Kostadinov, so - in his undoubted wisdom - is happy to sell him. But they'll be replaces in the close season when Vlad opens the cheque book and quality players start arriving by the busload.
Obviously. It's exactly the same as when we sold Velicka...

Agreed, it also begs the question; why was the likes of Mole and Elliot given runs in the team at an equally young age yet Branny has been over looked, particularly at a time when we have been short on strikers?

I hope its just a case of the lad being a bit light weight but his pace is electric and must be worthy of a shot on the bench at the very least!

Saying that, in the last few weeks we have had at least five lithuanians on the bench for each game. Not that I mind if they are always the best option, but are they really?

It seems 'Del Boy'Romanov has reverted to type and is back to flogging merchandise from the boot of his car....

'roll upski roll upski!'

'Anyone interested in an unused Bulgarian centre forward, plenty of potential... make me an offer!'

'I also have African international midfielder, very skillful, very strong, but with a slight limp!'

'If you want Scottish... I have young strong defenders and fleet of foot wingers... come see!'

'Gather round one and all and take your pick of my fine squad of players... every one must go!'

Inverness a great place to have given him 10 minutes just a little insight
What has Frail got to say about this i wonder or is he just doing as he is told again

I doubt we will here from Frail on this. He said in an interview just before Velika left "you will have to speak to someone who deals with transfers" and continually said he was a Hearts player right until he was sold.

Unfortunately, I think Shags is in as much of the dark as us.

Did anyone see the comments from Jose in the Daily Record, when he is quoted as saying "I know the Heart's fans have taken me as one of their favourites"?
Unbelievable!!! How out of touch is the owner, coaches and players at Tynie.
Jose - you are dreadful and have cost us a minimum of 10 goals this season from just downright bad defending that should have been basic and elementary. You are just another player who thinks he is better than he is.
You were rightly subbed against Rangers because you were to blame for the second goal and your general play in the first half was hopeless.

On Kostadinov - absolutely stinks and continues the theme of Romanov cashing in on absolutely everyone he can. That would say to me that VR has no cash left and administration rumours were not far away from the truth. Really fear for the future.

Newcastle Jambo,

The mission statement of Romanov's Hearts is to make as much money from selling players as possible. This will go directly to Romanov's bank and is totally unaccountable now that the club is privately owned.

All players are up for sale and only a fraction of the income will ever be spent on the squad. HMFC = money generation for Romanov, it has nothing whatsoever to do with football and nothing at all to do with the supporters who are trated with total contempt.

If there are any of you who believe otherwise you are just kidding yourselves. It's been obvious since Burley was sacked for refusing to pick the players who were a priority for a quick sale.
24

Propaganda boy,

10/03/2008 12:40:54
Yeah go on the website and check out the hundreds of goals Kostadinov has scored for the reserves and U19's, WOW what a loss he will be. I say if we can get money for someone who will never make first team we should jump at it.
25

Pedantic_Hibee,

10/03/2008 12:41:11
I thought Hibs were the selling club ?

Not only do Hearts contact the local newspaper and ask them to drum up interest in their players, they're now actively setting up their own try-before-you-buy policy on their most promising up and coming talent.

Hibs keep schtum and hold out for a price that's too good to refuse....Hearts, in fact, not Hearts....Vlad just wants to get rid of anyone he can so long as it lines his pockets.

The man is having a laugh at your expense, boys.

I'd be surprised if anyone has any faith in Romanov if this transfer is concluded. It's bad enough to work in a way that leaves the fans puzzled, it's worse to not come clean and give them an idea of why and how.

The fact is that he has not stood out either for the under 19's or on the odd occassion when he has played for the reserves, I have seen him in action a few times and did not see anything there that would have me calling for him to get into the first team squad.

Now then, Black Five and I told you on Friday that Romanov intends to "cash in" the team, and that everyone is effectively for sale.

Of course, we were dismissed as trouble making Fake Liths or Hobos. Ridiculous, given we are both long standing Hearts supporters.

I hate to say "told you so"... but I did tell you so.

Under Romanov, this club is f*****d.

#26 "I have seen him in action a few times and did not see anything there that would have me calling for him to get into the first team squad."
Fair enough. I guess we wait and see what happens. Of course, if he does join Man City, that would suggest that Sven Goran Eriksson thought he was good enough for the EPL...
30

Indie Rep Kid,

#28 It is common knowledge that all the players have a price on them so the 'exclusive', which Black Five so gleefully reported, was hardly ground-breaking.

31

McStumpy,

I hate to say it, but (for once) Pedantic makes some valid points. It's embarrassing being a Hearts fan right now - I still cringe when I remember Romanov's boasts about Champions League glory.

I refuse to support this regime, and will not be lining Vlad's coffers with my money any longer. I'd rather we went to the wall, and were resurrected via the lower leagues a la AFC Wimbledon than suffer further ignomony.
32

Roscoe P Coltrane,

10/03/2008 12:54:26
29 - exactly.

If he's good enough for Svennis and a decent Premiership team, then he's obviously not good enough for Hearts. Not.

If it does go ahead, any remaining tiny little wispy lingering positive thoughts about Romanov will blow away into the ether. It will be proof of his intentions and the contempt in which he holds the club and its customers (that's the fans Vlad, just in case you weren't sure).

However, it is only a trial, nothing has been signed yet. It might very well be that he's not good enough and that Vlad isn't up to anything dodgy at all, no, nothing, honest ossifier.
33

McStumpy,

Edinburgh 10/03/2008 12:58:50
#30 - True up to a point. There's a time when it's sensible cash in a player's value, and then there's the panic fire sale that seems to be emanating from Tynecastle, as evidenced by Hearts' shameless hawking of Kostadinov.

In fairness, I haven't seen the lad play, he could be utter mince for all I know. But mince usually ends up trotting out for East Sirling or Raith Rovers, not getting Sven excited.

If, come September, we still have Kingston and Berra, a few new (quality) signings, and a proven manager, then I'll happily eat my words and say I was wrong. But if, as I suspect, it's Frail in charge, Kingston and Berra sold on, and a team full of speculative free transfers, Bosmans, and journeymen, then it's another "told you so" moment I'm afraid.

I've given Romanov every chance, and a few months ago I would have argued that he genuinely did want the best for Hearts. But I've suffered a sever and sudden epiphany - the man is bad news for Hearts. He must be toppled. Now.

Having seen both play this season, I would have to agree that neither looked top class or ready for the first team.

Although Branny had pace and looked a bit dangerous, Copil strikes me as a pre-madona and more than a little moody. However, something must be said for the quality of coaching at Tynecastle as we clearly are not getting the best out of players, Bednar is a fine example of this, just look how long we seem to take to get players back fit (or fit at all in Nade's case).

#43 I predict the responses to your questions will fall into 2 broad groups:

1. No, cos Vlad will get plenty much money for him which will be ploghed back into the team to buy plenty good players.
2. Cos they're rubbish, Vlad was duped into buying them by Graham Rix and/or a voodoo curse.
3. No. never hahahaha Hibs are rubbish, we're great, and there's nothing wrong at Tynecastle. AT all.

OR

1. Yes, he does have potential, but hasn't quite adapted to the Scottish game yet. A decent bit of work at the pre-season could make all the difference.
2. Because we have no real youth coaching set up - the last U19 coach is currently interim caretaker manager. Further, the coaching in general at Tynecastle seems confused as a direct result of the number of different cooks involved in the last few years, chances for young players in the first team are limited due to the excess of overpaid wasters on our books.
3. Don't care, there's more pressing concerns for Hearts right noe. They must win it eventually, but not this year.
47

I suspect everyone is up for sale in an attempt to lower the wage bill and raise cash. I`ll really start getting worried if Vlad gets cold feet about the new stand project. The accounts when published should tell us a lot.
My thoughts on next season. Frail to be given the job full time and any new signings are likely to be journeymen European pros on the cheap and some more eastern europeans. I hope I`m wrong, but the predicted debt taking the new stand into consideration is unsustainable in my view unless cuts are made. Ah well never mind, at least most jambos have seen us win the Scottish cup.

#46 joses biggest problem is that he is clearly a centre half and not a left back. demonstrated in every game where he takes up centre half positions leaving the right wing devoid of any cover at all. needs to screw the head and stop making stupid mistakes...his header backwards v motherwell.
but yet tall isnt a midfielder, or zaulikas for that matter but someone thinks these guys can play centre mid and not look stupid.

doing piggyback races and wheelbarrows is not a method of coaching that will enhance players. therefore training and devleopment is not going to happen.
wouldnt say chances for younsters are limited but your face has to fit..eg elliot & mole.

i predict another 107 years before they win it.

with every story printed in this rag i feel less and less about hearts. its actually getting laughable and think the only way we will ever get any dignity back is when we get shafted down the river and have to come back as AFC Hearts or something.

no one will take on over 50m of debt and we are being run into the ground.

Basketball , English football and Scottish football is seemingly going to lead the way , with Hearts going to be the main team in focus from the SPL.

Selling players - Gact of life, all SPL clubs have to, including Rangers and Celtic.

Goncalves - Was he not leaving last week, according to the papers. Another bulls@#t story. why do we seem to get riled and consistently labelled as the team in a mess!!!?

Yes we have problems, but so does just about every club in the SPL:

Aberdeen: bottom 6 season, lucky to get so far in Europe, had it not been for this it would have been catastrophic season.

Celtic: How many times have they been lucky to win games this season, give them the injuries we've had they would be 12-15 points worse off

Dundee Utd: Sadly the chairman might not have long left, once he goes what happens to them? fortunate to have a good manager.

Hibs: Lost Collins this season, replaced with Mixu. never buy players, always sell. Do they have any assets left?

Rangers: Murray has been trying to sell the club for numerous years, nobody will touch it - why??????

Gretna: We all know the trouble there in!!!

Yes, Hearts have issues, but so do others, can the press for a change report on there problems instead of excalating and making up ours?

These guys need TLC and a shoulder to cry on. I get the impression they didnt get much "love" at Tynie, a pat on the back, an ego boost or whatever.
Now he has one of them managers like Mowbray, a father figure if you like, he is happy again.
I would imagine there are several players on our books who need similar care to feel "their best".

General questions, not strictly related to this thread although tangentially related:

Does anybody really still think there will be a proper, autonomous manager in place for next season?

Does anybody still believe for one second that Vlad gives a sh*t about this club or its supporters?

Personally I'd say no, but it would be interesting to see what justification the dwindling numbers of deluded jambos can still scrape together......
60

Roscoe P Coltrane,

Rob (if that's you and not a clone - you're sounding much more bitter than normal), I do have a little patience. In fact I've got the patience of the ubiquitous Benedictine Monk.

Unfortunately there's only so many years one can bend over to have a miget submariner with questionable morals give one's rear exhaust a thorough internal scrubbing without that patience running a little thin.

If only the little sh*t would swallow his pride and just tell us (the paying customer) what on earth he's up to (tell, not spin) once in a while, I think a lot more people would be feeling a bit more settled. That's just basic business sense and basic manners, neither of which he appears to have recently.
61

Chas Niceass,

10/03/2008 14:58:05
#60 See thats just the problem. To have any tangible success it would take years to build the base. For that we'd have to be patient, but then we have an owner with no real affinity for the club, since we've been losing anyway, who doesnt fill us with confidence.
Lets take the positive out of it, he's still there, had he been in for the quick buck he'd surely have been gone.
I think perhaps he is genuine to the extent he wants a successful business but his plans are flawed without public support.
Mind you all it takes is 5 signings in July and some will be persuaded the Champions League is on again.
Very fickle football fans.

#60 Don't forget what the bitter inferiority-complexed Hibees can come up with!

Yeah, I agree with you, I just don't see any enthusiasm from Vlad for the club any more. Maybe he's beavering away behind the scenes, but I severely doubt it. I've no idea what this summer is going to have in store for us, it could turn out great, it could go very very wrong. Or we could plod along for another few months in a fug in apathy and mystery...
63

Chas Niceass,

10/03/2008 15:10:15
#64 It could be that he is biding his time. Boom and bust isnt clever.
But what we need is something to believe in, and lets be frank, Romanov doesnt exactly exude truthfulness to believe in him. That could be the perversity of the whole situation in fact.
Does anyone know how Mandaric went about things at Portsmouth?
64

GrahamL,

10/03/2008 15:21:59
#66 It seems he's tried the boom and bust approach, we didn't quiet boom to the heights he expected and now we've well and truly busted. Question is, what does he do now? The sensible way is to have a solid base and build on that, but can he be arsed putting together the solid base for a slightly longer term view - or is he going to give up now, wash his hands of the hard work side and try just to keep things OK enough that he can still do his hotel/bank etc etc?
As you say, a bit of communication woudl be very helpful. Problem is that, if he was planning to abandon his big dreams for the club, then he wouldn't be telling us what was happening - if he had a plan in place, then why wouldn't he tell us? I'm finding it increasingly hard to be positive in the face of the silence...

sick of the spin and they way we are treated as mugs and dafties.

when someone comes in like vlad did looking like he his seriuos and talking the talk it is hard not to get caught up in it. and if he had stuck to his decision and cared as little back then maybe burley would still be there..

its the total interfernece and then walking away...stinks.

lying to the fans who make up the club and assuming we will all believe.

heres the thing...we did...and rightly so...but its all lost to lies and spin and being told we are getting a top class manager and getting graham rix etc
i believed for a long time...i believed at the start of this season but its not that we are cr**. ive seen us worse ON the field.
But we are the biggest joke in world football...no doubt. absolute joke of a club.

trying to convince us that burley was a drunk, telling us velicka is injured when he is in norway getting a medical.

no more stories. i dont care what he wants to make up. unless the bricks to the new stand are in place i will not be going back to tynie next season.
season ticket binned!!!

its insulting!!

#68 I dont think there is any obvious answers either way.
I'm inclined to think he's as stubborn as an ox and feels no need to answer to anyone.
Not good for our peace of mind, but it wouldnt surprise me if he comes through with some sort of plan that is in some way beneficial to us, but not before his own pockets are lined of course.
He's showing no desperate desire to get out, some might see that as a bad thing, but surely its some sort of indication he is trying to build something.
I'm as guilty of anyone at talking about this but maybe if we accept we are what we were/are and got on with trying to enjoy the football with that mindset it would be easier, but if only it were that simple.

Suffice to say, I don't believe you were ever "on our side". If you can be swayed because a couple of Hearts fans were a bit mean to you on the internet then it's not quite Martin Luther King levels of conviction is it??
Must be nice to support a team which has no arsehole fans, so you can take such a lofty moral stance.
80

Newcastle Jambo,

10/03/2008 16:41:48
I can't believe you guys, I really can't. The former England manager whose club record is second to none in world football is interested in signing a young player but you all immediately start the "he's not good enough for Hearts anyway, this is good business" mantra that we have seen over and over again over the past 2 years e.g. with Webster, Skacel, Pressley, Hartley, Brellier, Gordon, Bednar etc. As far as I am concerned, those guys werr top class and have simply not been replaced sufficiently hence the team has slid from well clear at the top of the league to struggling to get into the top 6. But hey, what do I know. You guys watch the reserves so know better than Sven that this young lad isn't good enough. Whatever.

NJ I wasnt going to comment on your post from earlier in this thread but since you have crawled out your pit of doom and gloom ill rise to it.

How many more people will have to explain the facts regarding those players and have you coming back the the retort fair comment.

You only ever post here and when you were on the bbc when there is bad news, if your that much of a Hearts fan then start showing some support for the players, no-one is asking you to support Vlad but you can at least show a little support for the 11 men on the field by attending a game or 2 instead of hiding down in newcastle using vlad as your reason for not going back to tynecastel... you can still attend away games if you want to protest against giving vlad your money before you use that old chestnut.

Guys, "caucasian" is a race. "Lithuanian" is not.

Besides, Vlad is a Russian with Lithuanian residency.

As an aside, I think we've got bigger things to worry about than the results/cup wins/league wins/whatever of ANY other club, even those of our local rivals. I'll happily go back to the 107 etc. route once I know whether there will still be a HMFC in 2010.

#91 GF - although Newcastle's viewpoint is, if anything, even more negative than my own, what possible reasons can you still have to trust this manipulative little t*rd that's in charge?

I completely understand your thinking about wanting to always support the team - although I don't go to anything like every game that's more to do with work than anything else, and I have NEVER booed a player on the pitch. However, how long are we collectively just going to bend over and get shafted with the thought that "he knows what he's doing" or "got to support the team" justifying it?

If you were paying your electricity company annually, and then for nearly three years they served up electricity that wasn't powerful/clean/whatever enough to power, say, your TV or Fridge, would you keep paying them because you were getting a new fridge anyway? Not a chance, you'd stop paying.

Vlad knows how blind loyalty to a team can be. And he's taking full advantage. And unfortunately there still remain some people who think he's the messiah.

Perhaps if he would just once act like a decent human being and speak directly to the supporters about what his plans are then we wouldn't have to sit in the dark coming up with conspiracy theories. A basic, fundamental skill in business is stakeholder management. Either Vlad doesn't understand that or, as I suspect, he truly doesn't give a sh*t.

You obviously havent read my views and comments regarding Vlad then? IM not defending Vlad however where i do draw the line is having to listen to newcastle Jambos continuous drivellings regarding romanov and never a good word to say about the team etc, and all this from a fan who admits never goes to watch the team, im sorry but when he starts supporting the club or should i say team then i will start to have a little more respect for him.

Work commitments are fine as you have said you do try to attend I have no problem with fans that cannot get to games due to work or other commitments that was not my point in general, my point was purely that NJ refuses to go or cant be bothered one or the other.

Roscoe P Coltrane,

Just read the threads as been away at a funeral, sorry it wasn`t Vlads` ,that was wishfull thinking. What I said on Friday is proving correct.Hardly groundbreaking news that players are for sale.Beg to differ. It`s groundbreaking as there are a few die hards whi think Vlad is still interested .He`s not and has not been for some time.Rememvber when he was ,Hartley was not for sale for any price. That soon changed. He wants to flog the team off. What Newcastle Jambo and McStumpy says is spot on.Get wise ,get this son of a bitch out before he completely destroys us.He has no interest. He`s only making money for himself. The club is doomed.A take over of another club like Livingston is only way out. It`s R I P Heart of Midlothian, that`s a fact.

Big Rob, I make no apologies for anything i said to that little sh1t Anton, and would say it again, maybe some comments were a little close to the bone, however im no racist, I have nothing against Lithuanian people or Lithuania as a country, however since you like to defend that little weasel perhaps you could give us some of you expert analysis regarding Antons comments towards Scotland and us Scots. Which were not only present in that thread (I think) not read it again so cant remember word for word everything, but have been present on many other threads for the last week or so.

As was stated my myself and i think it was The Moth earlier this morning on another thread, I will always defend my team and fellow fans when it comes to the anti hearts and anti Hearts fans statements/comments from any other fan regardless of their nationality. Just as i suspect you would as well going by how you post and things you say.

Anton is nothin but a sh1t stirring little idiot on these forums now, he was funny to start with and could have decent banter, now the joke has run its course more than once, and if he takes offence to anything I or others say then tough, I was supporting my club and going to watch Hearts before he even knew a country called Scotland exsisted let alone knowing any of its football teams (that is of course if he is Lithuanian, which i think we have shown with enough evidence of the last week or so he more than likely isnt)

What a POOR, POOR defence....(bit like Tynie in fact)
What CANNOT be in dispute is the unnerring need for FUNNIEST CORGY to back you up often within seconds...and certainly within minutes....of most posts that you make. There is NO getting away from the fact that you ARE INDEED banged to rights on this one, and to say owt else simply confirms you to be a total liar as well....a charge I'll (temporarily)hold in abaynce only long enough for you to reconsider carefully your position. Indeed it is "sooooooo" obvious that you are indeed one and the same(I'm frankly AMAZED that you'll even TRY to deny it) that you sometimes forget which of you has been written to by other posters, and the reply comes from the wrong pseudo. Deny it if you will, (but I DID have just a TINY feeling that perhaps you had even a little integrity),but be sure that you will never be able to bully your way around these pages now that your idiocy has been exposed, and make no mistake...IT HAS. Only your continued denials will keep the pressure on you till we finally expunge your guilt for you.
Incidentally,......how WOULD you explain these multiple coincidences( which we assume is your atance)of timings, comments, and pseudo mix-ups. It'll be a right guid laugh to see this explanation in print,...Oh, and remember ....these replies will be held on-line for posterity.
..Think about it CORGY/VICTOR...It's YOUR reputation that's on the line...suit yourself.....bluster or cough...the choice is rightly yours. We await with not-too-baited breath !!
