HEARTS interim manager Stephen Frail revealed today that the club are contemplating applying for InterToto Cup entry next season – but insisted that doesn't mean they've given up hope of making the UEFA Cup.
The Jambos currently sit in ninth place in the SPL, some way adrift of third spot which would secure automatic European qualification.

Since Frail was handed full control of team affairs they have shown signs of improvement, winning their last two league outings against Hibs and Aberdeen to keep alive their slim hopes. Pushing their way into the top six prior to the league split is the club's immediate priority before they attempt to close in on the teams further up the table.

Prior to this afternoon's matches, Hearts were 11 points behind third-placed Dundee United and five behind Falkirk in sixth.

And, while Frail admitted that the InterToto Cup is an option the Jambos are exploring, he assured supporters that he and the players would still be striving to reel in United.

"It's a possibility," said Frail when asked whether the club would be applying for the competition before the April 8 deadline.

"There is a good standard of opposition in the competition so it's something that the club will look at.

"We would have to start training a couple of weeks earlier but football is now 12 months of the year and the plus would be that we would have competitive games.

"We would have to look at the early start but it can take you into the season and the start of it is probably not far away from when we started last year.

"It sounds strange to say that we've not given up hope of getting into Europe either but if we can put a wee run together then we can kick on.

"We're not making any grand statements that we're going to finish third or fourth because the position we are in the league it will be very difficult but we need to be positive and try and win as many games as we can."

Meanwhile, Frail has dismissed reports linking the club with a move for former Rangers star Bob Malcolm.

The utility player, who can 0operate in defence or midfield, is a free agent after being released by Derby County and can therefore be signed outwith the transfer deadline.

The 27-year-old had been linked with a move to American Major League Soccer outfit Dallas FC while Hearts have also been credited with an interest in him.

Frail, however, insisted he is not a player that the club are looking to pursue.

"Bob is a good player and did well at Rangers but he's not one for us as far as I'm concerned," he said. "I consider him to be a midfielder and we are pretty well off in that area."

Frail admits Hearts are s**t! I think that's more accurate!

Pathetically disappointing season for all Jambos everywhere and an Intertoto place may be the only thing we could achieve!

Lord Muck,

I've seen Hearts Sold, bought, relegated, promoted, win cups lose cups. Ive seen great players, bad players bargain buys and players given away (OF). We've been on the brink were now financially 'independent'. We've overachieved, we've underachieved.

In other words supporting Hearts is a roller coaster ride. I'm not getting off or boycotting it. I sometimes feel nauseas, anxious and could panic but it also make me feel exhilarated, excited and . But I keep get drawn back. It is what it is.

Re wind the tape back to pre Romanov. We might be at Murrayfield, in what league I don't know. We could be playing in front of 2,000 people. Slowly dying if not already dead.

It could be a million time worse.

We welcomed Romanov as Hearts saviour. He thumbed his nose at the OF. Bought players instead of selling them. He brought in a great manager and off we went. For 1/4 of a season we were champions and may well have gone on to win the league, although GB thought it would be difficult with such a small squad.

On the crest of wave Romanov could do no wrong. However, like a lot of successful 'self made' men they have large egos, a hands on approach and like to think they know better.

The interference and decline is well catalogued.

Successful men are driven and are persistent but are not fools. Romanov needs to be successful. It is his drug. For him to admit he is wrong won't happen. What we are seeing is an admission by action that change is needed. He knows he needs skilled people in key positions to succeed. Is this the start?

Frail and co are not the answer. Romanov needs to change the perception of the Hearts job as a poisoned chalice. This will take a little time. Change will happen, its inevitable.

The doomsayers will of course object. Every time I see these little men with their sandwich boards proclaiming “THE END IS NIGH” I can’t help but think of those sad little Hibs (and some others) supporters and their dread that Romanov will deliver.

cont'd.....

Things are not right but they have been worse. Are we seeing signs of change or just misinformation? Who knows?

What I do know is that times like these we all need to get together en mass and get behind the team. Lets not fragment into little factions picking away at our great club.
16

Roscoe P Coltrane,

09/02/2008 14:24:58
Yessss - 2 points dropped by Hibs, beat Gretna and the Jambos overtake them......

Better move if I'm going to stand any chance of catching the kick-off....

Lord Muck.

The last thing that there is, is envy.

The only time that will be used is when Tynecastle is turned into affordable housing and then all the buggers inside will be envious that the old tenaments have real walls between the flats!

GGTTH FTH

Way Out West,

BBC's Billy Dodds got it right for this one - he predicted a 2-0 win for Hearts and that's how it's finished.

I'll be sporting and also mention that he correctly predicted a 1-1 draw for Hibs as well...
28

LyonHearts,

le teil 09/02/2008 18:23:19
That's the first time we've ever beaten Gretna by the way!

Intertoto here we come! weeey, heeeeeey!

So the, ahem, self proclaimed big team, have to qualify for the intertoto Cup. ;-)
