Hearts 2 - 1 Rangers
HEARTS fought tooth and nail for this fifth consecutive victory and thoroughly deserved to take three points from second-placed Rangers on a day when brawn was as vital as craft for Csaba Laszlo's side.
A 2-0 lead, earned through goals from Marius Zaliukas and Larry Kingston, was reduced to 2-1 in the first half but dogged, determined Hearts remained resolute throughout a testing second period to claim a priceless win. Even Lee Wallace's late dismissal for two bookable offences did not destabilise the hosts.

They enjoyed sterling displays from both goalscorers as well as Christophe Berra, Andy Driver and Bruno Aguiar, the outstanding player afield. With Aguiar's compatriot Pedro Mendes in the opposite midfield, the former Benfica midfielder appeared to determined to emerge with the upper hand and contributed heavily to both Hearts goals with scintillating set-piece deliveries.

Laszlo reinstated Kingston in place of Eggert Jonsson but most interest surrounded the hosts' goalkeeping position, not for the first time in a match against Rangers. Flu-ridden Janos Balogh was rendered unavailable and Jamie MacDonald stepped in for his maiden start at Tynecastle.

A familiar issue raised its head prior to kick-off with Hearts players once again awaiting payment of wages. This could have caused a distraction but, after a pre-match deluge of streamers from visiting supporters was cleared from the field, the hosts began in determined fashion. It wasn't long until another equally lamentable matter raised its head - 12 minutes to be exact - as the Rangers fans indulged in their first sectarian chant of the afternoon relating to Bobby Sands.

Regarding the football, the opening exchanges saw Hearts hem Rangers in their own half before a double entendre shortly after the 20-minute mark. Firstly, Aguiar's free-kick found the head of Berra in amongst a gathering of players, his header was parried by Allan McGregor but Zaliukas was in place to slam the ball home from close range. Less than two minutes later, following another Aguiar set-piece and another towering Berra header, Kingston converted the second as McGregor flapped around his six-yard area. Amid the delirium taking place in the Tynecastle stands, the general consensus was that this was now Hearts' game to lose.

Rangers regained a foothold in proceedings on 26 minutes when Christos Karipidis inadvertently put the ball into his own net. The Greek challenged Kris Boyd for Charlie Adam's free-kick and the ball bounced downwards and up onto the crossbar. As it came down Karipidis, sliding in to clear, succeeded only in deflecting it over the Hearts goal line.

Hearts resumed control towards half-time and Kingston ought to have scored after an intelligent interchange with Aguiar in the inside-right channel. The Ghanaian forced McGregor into a one-handed save early in the second period with a vicious drive on the run from 25 yards, but thereafter Rangers began a period of concerted pressure for the first time in the game.

Berra found himself in an enthralling physical battle with Boyd and, when Chris Burke and Nacho Novo replaced Adam and the anonymous Jean-Claude Darcheville, Rangers' attack assumed another dimension due to the injection of pace. Burke was heavily involved in Wallace's dismissal due his powerful running. The young full-back was cautioned twice for fouls on the winger on 71 and 76 minutes and, although the first appeared soft, there was no doubting the second, from behind, merited the yellow card.

With ten men, Hearts set up camp deep inside their own half for the closing stages expecting an visiting barrage. Kris Boyd dispatched a knockdown from Kyle Lafferty into the Roseburn Stand after 82 minutes and then claimed for a penalty in stoppage time after a penalty-box altercation with Robbie Neilson. Kirk Broadfoot then jabbed a half-chance wide, and with that Rangers' hopes of an equaliser evaporated.

Hearts (4-4-1-1): MacDonald; Neilson, Zaliukas, Berra, Wallace; Kingston, Karipidis, Palazuelos, Driver; Aguiar; Nade. Subs: Kello, Makela, Obua 85 (for Nade), Cesnauskis 81 (for Aguiar), Mole, Thomson, Jonsson 64 (for Kingston).

Rangers (4-4-2): McGregor; Broadfoot, Bougherra, Weir, Whittaker; Laffert, Mendes, Ferguson, Adam; Boyd, Darcheville. Subs: Alexander, Edu, Novo 72 (for Darcheville), McCulloch, Burke 56 (for Adam), Niguez, Loy.

Referee: Dougie McDonald.

Attendance: 15,710.

Great result and think the team today is the best we have and they played well enough to show that! Totally outplayed them for long spells with nothing at all from their supposed stars like Ferguson and Darcheville....5 wins on the trot, impresive in any league....mon the JTs!!

Watched the game live, Hearts were `Simply the Best` against the gers, Csaba have a word with Wallace could have cost us with the silly sending off, only 7 pts behind now interesting indeed.

C'mon the Gorgie !!

Great result and effort today.

As much as Lee Wallace deserved to get his two yellow cards today how on earth did Boyd, Bougherra and Adam not get sent off?

If the ref saw what Bougherra did to Driver, how is that not a straight red card? Is stamping now part of the game? Extraordinary stuff from the ref once again.

Onwards and upwards for the JTs though!!

2-1 A great result and pedicted the Hearts results 3 weeks in a row now, on a roll should start putting money on. Went for Nade first goalscorer can't have it all i guess. Just have to take it one game at a time but we are getting stronger as each game comes. Delighted with the team and even down to 10 you wouldn't have known. All down to belief and Laszlo!!

Nah, well done - should hopefully reduce the amount of knuckledraggers posting for a while anyway.

How come this is open for posting at all, come to think of it? It must be a conspiracy, what with not being able to post about the 'blip' as well........

Well, you've got to laugh that the apprenctices beat the "Establishment"!! Well done, Hearts, glad you dispelled the myth that it's always an easy 3 points for your cousins from the west coast when they visit Tynecastle.

At least it will be an interesting battle as to who will finish SECOND this year in the SPL.

#20 Can we knock this "cousins form the west" stuff please? I was at the game and God Save the Queen and Rule Britannia were very loudly booed by the entire Hearts ground. Boyd was booed and called a Judas. The Hearts fans also clapped the announcer's request before the game to not indulge in sectarian singing etc, in response to Rangers fans loudly booing said annoucement.

There is no love-in between Rangers and Hearts - never has been. Sure, I have absolutely no doubt that some of the handful of idiots in Section N who turn up with their Union Jacks for Celtic games ARE actual Rangers fans without the bus fare - simply because they are noticeable by their absence at other games.

Well the last 15 minutes were very tense at paradise.
After a fairly subdued performance, the champions entered the closing stages of the match one goal to the good in the knowledge that if things remained so, they would stretch their lead to 7 points at the top of the spl.

Caley got their tactics spot on ...they held a lot in reserve until the last 15 minutes calculating that the champions would be at their most vulnerable by then after their midweek champions league exertions.

But the bhoys stood fast, took the three points , and took another big step towards 4 in a row.

Hail! Hail!

Rearrangerz fanz must be gutted tonight...they hadn't quite completed their recovery from dropping points at motherwell, and today's events were a sledge hammer over the noggin'...it's like in tom and jerry, when tom suddenly gets whacked on the face which then adopts the shape of the offending object, his face frozen in a dumb smile....that's how I see the rearrangerz fanz tonight.

We now have a week for our players to rest after a fairly gruelling period. When the champions return to duty , they will be rested and resolved to maintain their 100% run.

The rearrangerz are in turmoil...their title challenge now hangs by a few threads...tannadice is beginning to look like the venue where it will disintegrate.

Gers fans have nothing to complain about here, except another dire performance. Does the midfield not get the chance to shine because the defence blooters high balls up the park, or, does the defence not trust the midfield and blooter high balls up the park? Over to you Walter. We play poor stuff, for long stretches, week in and week out and nothing gets done about correcting it. Maybe Jim McLean's article was directed right at Ibrox where it seems its harder to get out of the team than get into it. If we continue to play with the same lethargy that has infected us for most of the season, we can forget about winning anything this year. Its not enough to get up for games against the 'Tic.Punters pay to see them play for 90 mins. every week, so lets have it!

When the team sheets got read out I must admit I feared that Ferguson and Mendes would outclass our midfield.
Don't think i've ever been more wrong - hearts didn't let them in the game and the defense just had to deal with high balls.
A great team effort, real comaraderie on show too.
Thought the ref did okay but wonder if anyone will get pulled up for their flying elbows - i doubt it.
And 4 mins of extra time, WTF? Who was the fourth official? Andy Davis.

Big high punt up to the front two at all times.
How come that it is once again a very poor performance from Rangers rather than a good one from Hearts ?(Varied other reports)
McCoist - A word in your lug....if you want to become the Rangers manager you will need to be alive. With the amount of red faced tantrums you have you could be pushing up daisies before long.
A well deserved victory - If you think not - How many actual saves did McDonald the Jambos keeper make ?

I have a great fondness for that song, and it's great to be able to sing it again with well deserved conviction...coz te rearrangerz really are , merd.

I listened to jim traynor tonight and heard him say what many of us have suspected for so long : the rearrangerz are stony broke and that's why walter CANNOT be sacked...minty simply doesn't have the cash to pay off walter and attract a manager with similar experience...these are the darkest days at the dark star.

The Champions against Caley was a very dull affair and I'd rather peel spuds for 90 minutes than watch it again.

But it was all about nerve and mental strength ...digging out a victory when the players are jaded and recently returned from a bitterly disappointing away match in europe.

It's on days like today that you show your championship credentials ...that you just keep going and make sure you get out of it with all three points nomatter what.

That's what we did, and that's why we're Champions.

Sadly me thinks there will be trouble tonight in Glasgow....the type who attack Neil Lennon and Aiden McGeady : that's what they do when things are going quite well.

Tonight in Glasgow those who deserve the title 'Scotland's Shame' will be downing pints and shorts and growing angrier and angrier.

They will want to displace that cancerous rage, and will be keeping an eye out for someone bearing a crucifix, someone with an irish accent, or someone who just strikes them as being a catholic.

T his is when they are at their most dangerous, just when the title is pulling away out of reach...perhaps when the champions go 12 points clear, the level of rage will become more manageable....but tonight in glasgow, they will be itching to inflict violence .

Just listened to chick young's interview of "walter" after the game and the first "question" (if you could call it a question) is great fun.

Young is caught between trying to between trying to be a sports journalist and a rearrangerz lacky with hilarious results...his question begins with some poignancy and quickly withers away into some pipsqueekish psychophantic garble..."walter" maintains an icy silence as Young dissolves into incomprehensibility ...but eventually, the man with no surname has had enough of this snivelling wretch and barks angrily "WHIT DAE YI MEAN ?"

Young senses that the volcano is about to blow and breaks into uneasy laughter , and tries to make light of the whole thing ...he lays down before "Walter" rather in the manner the way a dog lies on its back in submissive pose.

"Walter" senses that honour has been satisfied enough, and eventually finds the inner strength to refrain from throttling Young before proceeding with what in the end is a fairly calm reponse peppered with just the occassional but unmistakeable hint of grumpiness.

Well worth clicking on at the bbc scotland sport website.

The thing is, last weekend Boruc fouled Dargo, and the papers were filled with articles quoting every man and his dog prepared to say in print that it should have been a red card.

Numerous stills of the challenge were published from every conceiveable angle ...they were trying to dress it up as a malicious challenge, and they were searching for some thousandth of a second frame which portrayed Artur in some malicious aspect...unfortunately for them, his eyes were tight shut and he looked more like az dope than anything else...certainly not an e^xpression of malicious intent.

Today, there were several rearrangerz playerz who could have been sent off, the most glaring of which was Bougherra who stood on driver's chest as he lay on his back. The ball had already gone out of play, and it was deliberate, blatant , violent conduct ...driver dragged a leg along the ground as though to kick back in retaliation, but managed to get hold of his senses and pulled out of it.

Bougherra should have been off for that , no question about it...but there were several other rearrangerz playerz who could have walked : how boyd stayed on the park defies rational analysis to name but one.

The laptoployalists however will not be boring everyone to death about it tomorrow...my guess is that there will be almost no mention of how lucky certain rearrangerz players were to stay on the field...all talk of what bougherra did will be avoided like the plague.
57

Helter Skelter,

Laszlo's reputation is beginning to grow. At the start of the season it looked as though hearts were in for another fairly desperate year ...aimless and pointless.

5 wins on the bounce is a good standard, not easily attained regardless of which 5 you took on. It takes a bit of mental strength to do that and Laszlo has to get a lot of credit for that...motherwell are next up for the jambos and they are going through a bad spell, so you wouldn't bet against them making it 6.

Mabey in hindsight it was a blessing in disguise as villa drew with man u and the best we could have done was uefa.

A prolonged uefa run might have proved our undoing...although if we keep stretching our lead at this rate between now and february, we might have had the league sewn up by then and we could be resting key players for euro matches.

I think we were unlucky in europe this year ...but then, perhaps lucky last year...mabey next year we'll get the breaks again.

Recognising that it will take a monumental effort, I nevertheless agree : if the champions win every match from now up until and including the rearrangerz match on 27th Dec, the title's safe.

I think rearrangerz will at best draw at tannadice, and that would mean us going 12 points clear on the 27th ...PROVIDED complacency doesn't set in, GAME OVER.

But Strachan would never allow complacency to set in ...the first tiny sign of it and he'd torch it.

Helter Skelter,

Hinkel is really beginning to show his quality ...the guy's brilliant. How we all doubted him after his poor start to this season ...this guy is now looking like a german internationalist.

I'll be honest, I'd given up hope, but massive credit to strachan for persevering where a lot of managers would have given up the ghost...it showed again strachan's incredible confidence in his own judgement to keep going with him...not so very long ago, hinkel had zero admirers in the stands.

Massive credit to hinkel too...it takes bawz of steel to shut out the criticism and focus on tryin g to find a bit of form.

Great !

BTO, remember this comment from before the game-

Hearts will be shown up for what they are when Ferguson and his pals play them today.

It will be a joy to watch for 90% of the crowd.

TOTT and his apaches will write thousands of words about how "we are improving in mid-field, and that was three corners"

But everyone will know.

Not good enough.

Good Evening BTO

I see the Buck Fast has finally worn off. If I were you I’d have and other bottle and stay under the quilt for a few days.

Freak results can happen to “great teams”, pumped out of Europe by our feeder club and then pumped out of the title race by the big side today !!

Away an’ lie in your ain *ish you perfect example of “Scotland’s Shame”!!

96 SIR VLAD,

I agree but the funny thing is the freak results seem to be happening more and more to the blue ablutophobes.

funny thing is that the sorcerers apprentice might be in charge sooner than he thinks and in seasons to come they will have to be fighting it out for a top 6 position.

What a day, what a result!
Despite the fact that I must have aged 20 years in the final 15 mins, Id like to congratulate the team on a great performance - one that can give Hearts fans a feeling of pride. (And there haven't been too many of those occasions recently).
How many papers had the problem with the players wages as their back page story?
And how much longer are the away support for Rangers going to get away with singing their sectarian songs?
Before I go Id just like to say that I thought the home crowd were excellent today - I took my dad who hasn't been in a good few years now and he said it reminded him of the atmosphere of the 80s.

HHGH!

BTO,

did you actually see the same game as everyone else today or are you just not man enough to admit your team was played off the park in the first half, fair play the rankers had the possesion in the second but thats because we knew we could handle the HOOFBALL tactics employed by backstabber smith so we just sat back and protected our lead.

they couldnt even score their own goal and could only resort to dirty play by trying to foul the hearts players off the park.

124

Der Kaiser,

I must admit I thought we'd chuck it in the last 15 minutes. Sitting back is not something we used to be good at but in our last few games we do appear to be able to soak up the pressure and limit chances for the opposition.
I thought Rangers were poor today. They totally bypassed their midfield and just pumped high balls up to Boyd which Berra mostly won. Darcheville was non-existent and I was surprised he wasn't hooked sooner (I imagine most Rangers fans want to see the back of him in January) .I don't know how a second yellow was never to shown to Boyd for his persistent fouling. He got off lightly.

After today’s performance I'd be very disappointed if Stewart walks back into the Hearts team. He's not been missed the last couple of games.
Another striker still needed but most pressing is getting a contract in front of Bruno. It's all very good him saying in the press he's happy at Hearts and wants to repay their faith blah blah blah. Get it signed Hearts!!

Csaba has a side with potential, Aguiar an Nielson have given us much needed experience must compliment Berra for his honest style of play.
Rangers dont know how to face a side who have a confidence about them, this Hearts side with Strikers who have quality goal scoring record is required as urgent.im not happy about the lack of a natural goal scorer.Thankfully other players are finding the net.

This was a 10/10 performance packed with Dynamite

The reason Rangers were so poor was through the way Hearts set out to crush there midfield.

anything to dismiss this very deserved result against the one of the BIG TWO.
never felt HMFC were in any trouble from rangers.
the players and management should be very proud of themselves.

#164. I thought Wallace was unfortunate with the first booking, Burke just punted the ball and ran straight into Wallace, how on earth was he supposed to get out of the way?

Rangers finishing the game with 11 men proves that McDonald entered the match with an agenda.
147

Rabbie Burns,

Down South 30/11/2008 10:45:50
As a Rangers supporter of 45 years standing I now think Smith has over-stayed his time at Ibrox. Whether Super Ally is ready to take over is debatable. The injury to Kevin Thomson is unfortunate and we could do with Naismith back fit again, but Darcheville, Lafferty, Adam and McCulloch are not class acts. Ferguson doesn't look the player he was either. Only plus marks right now are Broadfoot, Bougherra, Mendes, Boyd & Miller. Why doesn't Smith play Edu, Beasley and Aaron? What is the point of signing them if he is not going to play them? Celtic, I'm sorry to say, have a couple of players who can win games even if playing badly, notably the likes of Maloney, McGeady and Samaras. Rangers don't - that's the difference.
148

Gazzza,

Berkshire 30/11/2008 11:52:39
I watched this match on TV and my own personal unbiased opinion was that in that first 20 minutes Hearts could have been four up such was the ineptitude of most of the Rangers players.
This was not a football spectacle, far from it, but most of the football that was played, certainly in that first half, was played by Hearts.
The Hearts manager certainly got his tactics right and I suspect that even he was surprised at the team and lack of tactical nouce that Hearts were facing on the day.
Now they need to keep the momentum going and have the confidence to take on and beat other teams.

Too many Scottish sides are frightened of the old firm but as Aalborg proved, Celtic are no big deal either. Teams just need to attack them and show confidence.

As for Rangers well they are on a downward slope. There manager, a nice olf gentleman is tactically clueless and his team selections unbelievable at best.
The amount of money he has wasted on players must be an embarrassment to both him and his chairman.
He is a football dinasaur and would be more at home with the other relics in the SFA

The REF done is best to try and get rangers a 3-2 victory.. But he'll be gutted he failed!

Wallace sent off for two fouls, Boyd stayed on the park with over 10 fouls? How does that work!

Ooooh.. And Kyle Lafferty is worth about 3p, not 3M. Now i finally know why Owen Coyle wanted to drive Kyle Lafferty up to Glasgow on his own when Rangers offered that money!!
150

Gazzza,

30/11/2008 12:05:19
I actually thought that the referree for once had a pretty decent game but I hear rumours that he is a Hibs fan so he must have been biased against Hearts.
Wallace has only himself to blame for being sent off. He got himself booked foolishly and the referee had no option but to book him a second time for the foul on Burke.
What I would say is that Whittaker was lucky to stay on the park and perhaps Adam could have been redcarded as well. The fact that both these players remained on the park was more beneficial to Hearts than any advantage which would have been gained from their departure.
When have you seen two worse examples of SPL players, a full back who can't kick the ball and an outside forward who can't run!
Be fair to the referee for once.
151

No. 5 - Ibrahim Tall,

Whittaker should have gone along with Boyd. Wallace made two tackles and got sent off - Referees deserve respect when they earn it.

I watch Barcelona and Real Madrid every week on sky sports and the ref's over there are absolutly superb.

Bring in foriegn referees.. That way there is no favourite teams for referees!

Glad the team won and Csabas first win v any weegies so far in only 3 attempts. If he can bring in a few additions of his own and move on a few stragglers then things can only improve further on the park and his ways of playing the game are starting to bear fruit already after only a few months in charge.
Have to admit, that was as easy a win against Gers as i can remember (since last seasons 4-2) and down to how well we played as a team, allied to the ineptness of Boyd again, he is mince no wonder they are toiling with him in the side.

People are going to get used to the fact that the club, the players and the supporters of HMFC have ambition. Like it or lump it, we want to challenge the OF. We want to play in the champions league. We want a bigger stadium and the fans to fill it.

OF supporters dont like it as we might just threaten their domination one day. Everyone else doesnt like it because we have that ambition and they are happy being average. Maybe we will and maybe we wont. Who knows.

What I do know is that it feels absolutely amazing knowing the club you support, the players on the field, the manager, the fans, the people behind the scenes at the club and the owner are 100% together in trying to achieve these goals.

Feels good eh??
157

Plantagenet,

177. I am 100 per cent behind your sentiments and ambitions for Hearts, I just wish that Romanov would demonstrate similar feelings, for instance when something really good happens for Hearts like yesterday's triumph it always seems to be dampened by something like delays in new Grandstand planning or players wages being delayed. Take away the negatives Romanov and let us be up there at the top of the league where we deserve to be.
158

Vlad Magic,

30/11/2008 13:55:12
In fairness you cant hold Mr Romanov accountable to delays in planning can you? Or for that matter delays in players payments? #181 It is the fault of whoever was supposed to provide the council with the necessary information. That does not necessarily mean Mr Romanov. I would suggest that he would be one of the last people to be given this task seeing as he is rarely in this country at present and is running his other business interests.

I might hazard a guess that someone is employed to oversee the stadium project and that they are accountable. But hey lets just blaim Romanov anyway.

#184.

Taking your argument to the point of rediculous. Mr Romanov is therefore to blaim for everthing that has/may go wrong within the club from the toilets being messy to the pitch cutting up? Seeing as the buck stops with him?

I agree the buck must stop with him on some issues but on this occasion, the necessary information not being supplied can not be ablaimed to him.

I would go so far as to say that perhaps no one is to blaim? A project such as our stadium redevelopment is a minefield of applications, red tape, offialdom and is notoriously difficult to obtain.

The fact that council officials are asking for more information does not necessarliy mean we are at fault and therefore someone is to blaim. It could merely be that the council are saying "ok you have given us this but we also need this before we can go any further." Yes?

If the council had said "what you have given us is incorrect/wrong or a pack of lies" and the whole project was put in jeapordy because of this, then yes I would agree with you that someone would have to take the blaim. As it stands this hasn't happened, they are just asking us for more information.

Walter Smih has indicated he is going to offload some players in January. With the Jambos looking for another striker, surely it make sense for them to go in for Velicka who was a proven striker for them in the past and wouldn't cost them much to take him back from Rangers. Better than signing another duffer!

#194 I think we agree to dissagree. At least you conceded that Mr Romanov is not to blaim for the project being delayed.

"Wouldn't it be better all round if Hearts got it right first time? If the Council's precise requirements had been correctly ascertained at the outset?"

Perhaps we did? Perhaps the council in fact made a mistake and realised they required more information? Perhaps someone at the council is to blaim? Its so easy to aportion blaim to people without knowing all the facts. I am merely putting another slant on this issue.

Something else that rattles my cage,
was the singing from both sets of supporters it's sad that fans act in that way, time for change, time to ban them all from every ground.

Despite what I admitted earlier, i.e. that Rangers are dire right now, Celtic and Hearts fans needn't get too carried away. Hearts will drift back into mid-table obscurity in the New Year and Celtic are only good enough to top the league in Scotland because the opposition has been so poor for the last 3 years or so. All Scottish teams out of Europe before the end of November - how bad is that!? Rangers only hope this season is for Celtic's excessive good luck to dry up and to hit some poor form and for Rangers to take some chances, with a team along these lines:

Alexander; Whittaker, Broadfoot, Bougherra, Smith; Davis, Mendes, Ferguson, Edu; Boyd, Fleck

Subs: McGregor, Papac, Beasley, Naismith, Miller.

McGregor's form isn't great at the moment and play Broadfoot in his natural position of centre back and give John Fleck the chance - if you are good enough you are old enough!

I think its fair to say that with the economic climate as it is, there will be no big spending during the January window. Probably more players leaving than joining. Hopefully we can pick up a player or 2 on loan or on the cheap that can improve what is allready a fairly decent team. With Csaba at the helm and some players still to return from injury, we have the chance of a great season.

Believe.

204. I hope that my comments about Negative publicity every time something good happens to Hearts were not taken as a dig at supporters who back Romanov. I would happily sing the praises of Romanov if he would communicate more with the fans like yourself, if he would employ people who really know the Scottish game, if he would stop bringing in duds and invest in quality players. If he did those things then I would happily wear a Russian hat to matches and lead the chorus of Vladimar Romanov, Vladimar Romanov.
