ANNAN ATHLETIC have been admitted to the Scottish Football League after winning a vote to replace Gretna.
At a meeting at Hampden this afternoon, the 29 SFL clubs voted in favour of the East of Scotland League team being invited to join the Irn-Bru Third Division.

Spartans, Edinburgh City, Preston Athletic and Cove Rangers had also applied to take the place left vacant by Gretna, who went out of business after being relegated from the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

SFA chief executive Gordon Smith said: "It was a pity that, because of the demise of Gretna, this position had come up regarding the vacancy in the league.

"However, there were five very strong candidates to take their place and there was a very competitive race between them to win entry into the league.

"I feel sorry for the four of them who were unsuccessful, but congratulate Annan Athletic on getting the position in the league and would like to wish them all the very best for the future.

"To the other four clubs, I would say that they should continue the work that they are doing and that sometime in the future there maybe a system in place that allows them to get entry into the Scottish League."

Yes I agree with #2 I thought it might be Spartans.
But well done to Annan and good luck to them in the SFL.

Hand on my heart,I wanted it to be Spartans but head on the line it had to be Annan. They're not the stongest team but they can change that now. The SFL Club chairmen voted for bums on seats...you can't argue with that...

Who?,

Spartans and edinburgh city would have been wound up in 5 years had they been voted in.

Now these two clubs can live within their means and the one man and his dog who attend games can watch them in peace without that fool patillo and his bunch of muppets making a (camp) song and dance.

Well done the sfl and well done annan.

Wrong decision, pure and simple.
Sentimentally going for 'all of Scotland' representation, with Annan replacing Gretna.
I'm not from Edinburgh, so I have no attachment to any of the Edinburgh area applications, but Annan are not good enough to be in the top flight of their own League - every team from that was above them. This is as bad a decision as the one that let Ferranti Thistle in instead of of decent teams from the Highland League.
Annan will not benefit from this decision - and I wish the place well, as I worked there in the 1980s.

Or, if you are cynical, very good lobbying by Annan, although having heard the Chairman on the radio today, I'm not sure if that was the club's strong suit.

DG12 5HT, so you can all programme it into your satnav for next season, but have a good look at a map first!
