Tough choices for Romanov as clubs target Hearts stars

Published Date: 31 March 2008
VLADIMIR ROMANOV has told his players that major decisions are imminent at Tynecastle and the majority shareholder plans to attend all remaining Hearts fixtures this season in order to make them.
Romanov addressed the squad in Tynecastle's executive suite on Friday afternoon, stating that many of them have potential suitors waiting in the wings. He then took in Saturday's 1-0 victory over Dundee United and congratulated the team in the dressing-room before flying back to Lithuania.

He is expected to return for Saturday's visit to Rugby Park and all subsequent Hearts matches thereafter. The club's search for a permanent manager remains ongoing and Romanov is also keen to determine which players have a long-term future in Edinburgh and who will depart during the summer.

"It's been a disappointing season but you are all good players and many of you are attracting interest from other clubs. This is the time of the season when important decisions are made," Romanov told the squad.

The Russian businessman also praised Hearts' coaching and management staff during the meeting. His spokesperson, Charlie Mann, said today: "Mr Romanov wanted to give a rallying call to the players because we're getting down to the business end of the season. He intends to be at all the matches through to the end of the season because his schedule should allow him to.

"Also, he doesn't want to be seen to be hiding when things like financial results and debt figures are being announced. He is facing up to the task."

Hearts revealed financial results on Friday showing record turnover of £10.32million but the club's debt has also reached £36.25m.

Before Saturday, Romanov hadn't attended a Hearts match since last November when Aberdeen were defeated 4-1. He is likely to spend most weekends in Scotland watching the team through to the end of the season but will fly home to Lithuania in between.

Saturday's victory over Dundee United, brought about by Larry Kingston's first-half strike, maintains ambitions of a top-six finish.

Falkirk currently sit one point ahead of Stephen Frail's side in sixth place but victory over Kilmarnock on Saturday followed by a draw or an Aberdeen victory when Falkirk travel to Pittodrie next Monday will promote Hearts into the top six for the SPL split.

"It's down to Falkirk but hopefully next week, if we can win against Kilmarnock, then Aberdeen can do us a favour," said captain Christophe Berra.

Meanwhile, Djurgarden have admitted defeat in their attempts to sign Saulius Mikoliunas. The Swedish club contacted Hearts over the availability of Mikoliunas and other players but, with the Scandinavian transfer window due to close this evening, time is running out.

"I don't think it will happen," said Bosse Andersson, sports director of Djurgarden, "We spoke with Hearts but maybe something can happen in the future."

• HEARTS reserves are due to face Kilmarnock at Forthbank Stadium in Stirling tomorrow. The match kicks off at 1pm.

What a complete Gunther you are.

As usual, Banderson is off the mark. EVERY club is assessing theur squds at this time of year (Strachan has admitted he needs to 'tidy up' his squad) but the main question should be the inference that it will be Vlad making the decisions here.

1. Miko has been very impressive over the last few weeks and I for one will be happy to keep him. If he can just improve on his final ball he would be an exciting winger.

2. Lee Wilkie is a flump, he was bitter about missing the Cup Final penalty when some of my neighbours in Section E lower reminded him about it, he also had his hands all over big Zal whenever he got near him in either penalty box so he should keep his trap shut!

So vlad is in town to sell season tickets- roll up roll up....

Vlad has caused the mess hearts are in by gob smacking mis-management. He does't want to hide, well he's done a very good job of it so far this season.

Surley a new manager should be the person to judge the players and decide who stays and who goes. Of the players who are left very few of them will command any sort of transfer fee. If a new manager does get appointed will there be any decent players left?

I get the feeling vlad is doing an audit of whats left so he can flog the last few decent players. If the job of attracting a new manager wasn't hard enough due to vlads business acumen then the jobs now got a lot harder.

I can't imagine much motivation for Aberdeen against Falkirk if we win, especially a few days before the cup semi - with, most likely, a UEFA cup spot if the win that one...

#36 The whole damn things a farce isn't it?
In proper leagues, the last games of the season are all played at the same time so no-one gets an advantage from knowing the results. Same thing should apply for games before the split. While our chances of making the top 6 were pretty slim anyway this seems an unreasonable extra handicap. Our only hope seems to be to win against Killie and hope that Falkirk suffer a severe cowarse/banjo misfunction on Monday night...

You are right - in a proper league important games would be played at the same time to ensure no advantage to any club. OK, we have to win to make Falkirk go for it, but even if we win by only one goal the Dons would have to win by 6 or more to leapfrog us - I don't doubt the professionalism of the Dons players, but there is no way they will be as psyched up as the Falkirk players will be for this game. If its so important to get this match on Setanda why can't both matches be moved to 12:30 on Saturday? or is that too sensible? As usual the Jambos are getting the thin edge of the wedge !

I posted on Saturday , that the Miko story was total BS.
Leaked to Hearts fans as to to make them a wee bit happier with the boss attending the match and that the deal would miraaculously fall through before tonights deadline.
Lo and behold..........
The irony of it is - Miko played well on Saturday - all he needs to do is keep the performances going and learn how to tackle. Mind you I have said this numerous times before. Plus he actually got a foul given in his favour - Should have been a few more.

No manager - no ticket.

Till we found a sea of green,
And we lived above our means,
In our land of make believe.

We are living an impossible dream,
impossible dream, impossible dream,
We are supporting a substandard team,
Substandard team, substandard team.

And our friends are all abroad
Many more of them live in my head,
And the band begins to play.

We are living an impossible dream,

We can't just go in and get rid of 20 players without replacing the majority of them. Our squad is not as big as some would make out - especially now.

Back to the story for a minute.

It's rather too late is it not? The club has been a shambles for the past 18 months and Romanov's hardly been at a game to see it.

Also, fine that he's actually attending games but not the implication that this is so that he can decide which players to keep. For god's sake, can he not understand that we need a MANAGER to play this role not a (mostly) absentee owner with no knowledge of football???

While I'd love to see Levein or Jeffries brought back it's far more likely to be Mad Malofeev or Korobotchup. Sadly.
66

Eh....,

31/03/2008 14:25:24
#66 The first two options are the most likley.

I would like mcghee as manager but there is no way in hell i can see he and vlad getting on with each other. mcghee will be well aware that his stock has risen this season. If motherwell get third then i feel he will stay there for another season. He can then move on from fir park after (possibly) two very good seasons and uefa cup football under his belt. If motherwell got to the group stages of the uefa cup then they could progress. Lets face it if this seasons aberdeen can have european football after christmas then mcghee's motherwell should do no worse.

What?? Of course it does! Are you mad?? We won a game, therefore we're the best team in the world. That's what we're all saying isn't it? We beat Dundee United, so now we're going to win the League, the Cup, the Champions League. In fact we're now so good that FIFA are going to give us special dispensation to enter the Euro Championships, Copa America, African Cup of Nations and the World Cup. And we're going to win them all. Because we beat Dundee United. 1-0. At home. So there. We're the best football team in the world now, and will be for the next million years. We're so good that even when the human race has died out, Hearts will still be going. Oh yes we are.

#85 6 wins 2 draws and only 2 defeats to Celtic and Rangers, you not paying attention fool. The debt does not take into account a guaranteed 9 million already for Gordon and Bednar an another 2.5 if one stays in the Premier and the other gets there, lets just say the debt is being serviced.
Easy to see which team you support you utter balloon.

#77 Where to start. He took over with nearly 22m of debt. And that was 3 years ago. He doesn't own a bank, and If the Gordon transfer had gone through just a week or so earlier the debt would only have shown as being increased by about 5m - pretty good amount for a SC and 2nd place in the league.

Apart from everything you wrote being wrong, your post was spot on. Well done!

Things are looking up, things are getting done properly again.

Just out of interest, if HMFC had £17m debt and Romanov has doubled it by spending his own money, I would be curious to know if you could put your obviously talented accredited financially astute mind as to exactly how he 'WILL sell your club down the tubes, he will walk and HMFC will be no longer'.

If and when he walks he will take a severe financial hit as any prospective buyer will offer best price (after doing due diligence, which you will obviously be aware of) and will offer what the club is worth, not whatever debts he has accrued.

As I have said before, David Murray is desperate to offload Rankgers but due to their level of debt (currently around £100m) no-one will touch them with a bargepole, so he too will eventually have to sell at a loss.

I agree that the inter-tattie cup is waste of time, the friendly against Barca would be good for revenue though, I think we could do with it at the moment. I heard the club wanted to avoid a pre-season like last year, surely the stupid two trips away and the prehistoric methods of coaching were the problem.

I would start clearing out the big money earners who just aren't cutting it. Had high hopes for Pinilla but just gonna have to accept we'll never see him play, likewise Nade should shape up or ship out. Bednar doesn't want to come back so there's another one, they obviously don't rate Makela or Beslija so lets not kid ourselves they'll ever play. Should shift a few quid I would imagine.

#107 Would have thought that the recent team selections which have more or less picked themsleves would prove that Vlad is no longer involved in picking the team. As for him selling players - same goes for all clubs. Petrie decides who comes and goes at ER.

#115, when did vlad make the 'pledge to make hearts debt free within one year'? please direct me to your source as i would be interested to read it - maybe you could also find the one where he promises to win the champions league as well....these 'quotes' of course only exist in the minds of deluded hibees and desperate tabloid football 'journalists'...

spot on #117 JT&T - the weegie press and the hibees adopt the same tactic, make up any old p*sh about the hearts, claim it is a quote from vlad and away you go....

the irony is of course that vlad is more than capable of spouting enough p*sh to keep us all happy, but at least let's be fair only attribute actual quotes to our great leader rather than just make them up because they support an arguement/sell tabloids

Ewan Murray can't be described as a reporter,he's just written Charlie Mann's drivel without questioning the validity of any of it.
Here are some questions he should have asked.
1) How can" UBIG buy the site
from Hearts".They don't own it.Its just leased from the Council.
2)UBIG has"published assets of £435million.What about their liabilities of £494 million. What was their profit? - NIL.
3)By summer the debt may only increase by £5 million, the £36 m. was to Ju
