SIR SEAN CONNERY has been challenged to put his money where his mouth is after criticising one of Edinburgh's top visitor attractions.
Staff at The Real Mary King's Close were left stunned after the legendary Scottish film icon made some scathing comments on the attraction in his new book, Being a Scot.

Owners were bemused at his description of the Royal Mile attraction, which has around 170,000 visitors a year, as "a Disneyfied haunted-house experience".

They have now challenged Sir Sean, who is in Edinburgh to launch his book at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, to visit them and see for himself.

As an incentive they have promised to pay out £1000 to a charity of his choice if he is still unimpressed with what they offer visitors.

In return they have asked him to agree to pledge the same amount to their nominated charity, the Sick Children's Foundation at the Royal Hospital in Edinburgh, if he does change his mind about the attraction.

A copy of the challenge will be delivered to Sir Sean's hotel suite, while another will be delivered personally to the actor when he appears at the Book Festival on Monday.

The book, which covers Sir Sean's early life in Edinburgh as well as his current impressions of the city, was co-written by author Murray Grigor and includes a segment in which he raises concerns about the growth of 'dark tourism' in the Capital.

In it, he wrote of The Real Mary King's Close: "When what became the City Chambers were built in the 18th century, the closes were all levelled off and sealed from above, leaving shops and rooms below intact. The public is now able to visit this subterranean part of the city. But instead of being able to appreciate how people then lived, they have to go along with a Disneyfied haunted-house experience."

Stephen Spencer, General Manager of The Real Mary King's Close, said: "In response to Sir Sean's comments, we challenge him to put his money where his mouth is.

"We invite him to visit The Real Mary King's Close and if he is still unimpressed we will donate £1000 to his chosen charity, providing he is prepared to match or better this amount to our chosen charity, the Sick Kids Friends Foundation at the Royal Hospital in Edinburgh, if he is impressed.

"We also think he must have forgotten the fact that he has made millions out of dramatising fiction, when we are merely dramatising fact.

"We look forward to hopefully welcoming him and revealing a very real history connected to the site's amazing past and perhaps even telling him something different about his beloved home city."

Sir Sean's publicist could not be reached for comment on the challenge.

I wonder if the former milkman will have the bottle or will his refusal be a slap in the face for challengers?

Ask Shir Shawn to spend a night inside the place,i am sure he would give more than £1,000 to get out.

Sean Connory should get his érse up there...when he has been starring in p!shy films like "Highlander"...biggest crock of...he has the gall to make negative comments about Edinburgh's tourist draws...

Tell you whit 'Double oh whit the féck'...I've been doon the close and its bliddy marvellous...full of atmosphere of the past and reeking with genuine history...sure the guides can talk a load o' shoite but most of it is genuine historical fact and is actually EDUCATION.....

You put your money where your mooth is laddie....

I'd like to see ''Shir Shawn'' take up this challenge.
The guy claims to be a proud Scot.... yet he lives in the USA. Instead of slating local attractions and history, get yerself out of Hollywoods spotlight for O.A.P's and give a grand to charity!
I've lived in Edinburgh all my life and I'm still finding out interesting things about the city's past, including Mary King's Close.

"Woohoo" says the York-based Continuum Group (who manage The Real Mary King's Close)! We get loads of publicity in the local newspaper, including a link to our website for the knock-down price of only £1000!

What would be interesting is finding out how much the citizens of Edinburgh make out this place (considering that we own it), and how much leaves the city? But then that requires a journalist to do something, not regurgitate whatever press release lands on his desk...

OK, so Sir Sean dismissing the alleged tacky nature of the attraction was perhaps mildly newsworthy, but this story certainly isn't.

why don't they both give the money to charity, regardless of whether Sir Sean is impressed or not ?

What Sean says is irrelevant, he has not lived here for ages, send the man packing back to the States, and never heed, a word off it!

I have visited Mary King's Close several times. Both BEFORE and AFTER the costumed guides took over. I don't think it a a DisneyWorld type promo---Disney is really tacky. The first two times I visited, we were taken through a door and down some steps to gain entry. Now of course, one has to enter the gift shop in order to buy tickets, wait until time is called to enter. Sir Sean is making a mistake if he doesn't visit. The guides know the history and can answer visitor's questions. They probably know more about the close than Sir S.

While it is maybe too far to say it is Disneyfied - I first visited this close in 1988 , when a local historian showed you round for free and there was none of the ghost and ghouls stories -it was really great seeing something that wasn't well publicised.

The second and third times were with friends visiting Edinburgh in the last few years and the change was marked. Much more time spent on the haunted aspects rather than the day to day life.

So basically I would say that fiction is getting in the way of fact as that attracts more people and more money to this attraction - you can't blame a company for wanting to make profits.

Facts and Fiction are part of the tours!
Just like Sir Sean in the film Highlander.
You telling me Sean boy that the film was not tarted up and a bit more glitz in it to make it more intertaining for people to watch ? IT WAS NOT ALL FACTS. You should know that as a so called Scotsman !
When it suits your Scottish !
You live abroad and have the cheek to slag of the tours in your home town, and turn up to push your book in Edinburgh .
Leave a cheque for some charities in Edinburgh then Sir Sean before you go back abroad ok.

I've enjoyed many of the roles this entertainer has performed over the years, but isn't his criticism that these tours have been Disneyfied kind of biting the hand that fed him some of his earliest jobs?

agree with Martin #10 but even with the "new" guides, the close is a neat place to visit. I too had the tours with the historian and agree but ..........

I had wondered what to call someone who is above paying parking fines. Now I know - it's a "legendary Scottish film icon".

Sycophantic twaddle.

Surely Highlander is full of facts! We all know people who are immortal! beejings as my old comics used to say. Shame on the newspaper for making such a big thing of a comment by Sir Sean. And shame on all of you who can't wait to have a go at Mr Connery. I've been down the close too, and I enjoyed it (other than the fact my poor spanish niece couldn't get an audio tour) but I can see where the disneyfied comment comes from. The tour was informative and I recommend it to all who visit Edinburgh, but there was a lot of trying to make the visitors jump involved - to me that can qualify as 'disneyfying' but doesn't make it rubbish.
ou lot are all entitled to your opinions about everything, and rightly so. Are you saying that Sean Connery isn't? Why? Because he lives abroad? or because he's rich and famous? sod you all. Sir Sean rocks!

'Disneyfied' - Sean's literary ability astounds me!
