FORMER brain tumour patient Ross Newlands, 16, has been praised in parliament by Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon as a "tribute to his generation".

Ross – who successfully overcame his illness after eight months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy – last week presented Ms Sturgeon with the Evening News' 20,000-signature petition demanding children's cancer services are kept at the Capital's Sick Kids hospital.

The issue was raised in the Scottish Parliament by Edinburgh Central Labour MSP Sarah Boyack, who noted the picture of Ms Stugeon with Ross in the Evening News.

Ms Sturgeon said: "I want to pay tribute to the extraordinary young man who presented that petition to me. He is a tribute to his generation."
