HIS makeover may not have cost the reputed £90,000 spent to smarten up US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
Instead, a simple trip to the hairdressers to remove his beloved ponytail sufficed.

Prior to being selected to fight the city's Forth ward in the forthcoming council by-election, SNP hopeful George Gordon's political opponents likened him to rock star Meatloaf.

But now having had the "snip", and having forsaken his normal jeans and T-shirt in favour of a pinstripe suit, he looks more like a city banker than the "hippy" he admits he once was.

Mr Gordon has denied the transformation was ordered by the SNP's top brass as a condition of his selection.

According to political gossip in the north of the city, Edinburgh Nationalist leader Steve Cardownie and MSP Kenny MacAskill were behind the decision to tell the 47-year-old the ponytail had to go.

However, he insisted it was his own choice to lose the ponytail, which he said has "taken a few years off me".

The November 6 by-election is widely expected to be a two-way contest between Labour's Cammy Day and Mr Gordon, a Royston/Wardieburn community councillor who last year narrowly lost out in the SNP's selection process for the same ward to Cllr Cardownie.

One political insider said today: "Cardownie told George that if he wanted to stand as a candidate, he had to smarten himself up.

"He'd been going around with long hair down his back, and wore jeans and a T-shirt. He also smells of smoke and his hobby is protecting swans.

"So he was sent off to get a £70 makeover, and he now walks round in a pinstripe suit like a banker. He looks completely different."

Another source said: "He used to look like Meatloaf, so Cardownie ordered him to clean up his image."

Mr Gordon said: "When I was standing as a candidate for the internal election within the SNP, it became a general discussion point.

"There's nothing really to tell. I decided I looked better without (the ponytail] and that was it. It took a few years off me.

"I had the ponytail for about 12 or 13 years. It's just a normal hairstyle now. The hairdresser tidied me up and made me look pretty again.

"There have been rumours that Kenny MacAskill was saying something about it, and it's snowballed.

"But it was my own decision – nobody forced me. I asked for general opinion. I had been going around looking like a hippy for a few years."

Cllr Cardownie said accusations of his involvement are "a load of nonsense".

"George had his ponytail for some time, but he's serious about being a councillor," he said.

"His political opponents must be desperate in the extreme."

Mr MacAskill added: "This is utter nonsense. This isn't my area and, frankly, I've got other things to concentrate my mind on. George is an excellent candidate and will be an excellent councillor."

A total of nine candidates are standing in the contest, which is being held following the tragic death of Labour councillor Elizabeth Maginnis last month.

Personal abuse seems to be all George Gordon's opponents can throw at him.

His record of community service stands head and shoulders above all the other serious contenders.

You are very quick to sling mud.

Can you tell us exactly what "personal abuse" that the other candidates have been spreading?

I have seen the LibDem leaflets - they do not mention the SNP candidate at all - let alone throw abuse.

The LibDems are fighting a positive campaign with a young and energetic candiate that will take her role as a councillor seriously and not just as a platform for independence.

The SNP doesnt face up to its repsonsibities on the Council - they cant take difficult decisions.
They want it both ways.
Are they part of the administration or the opposition?

The LibDems can win this election, the SNP will not.

Doh

I was referring to the posters above not Lid Dem leaflets which told lies about previous voting in Forth and showed candidate filling car with petrol when she claimed she always travelled by bus.

Its a two horse race between Labour and SNP ask any bookie.

Or go to www.piltonsucks.com for unbiased comment on the by election.

"On four pages Mr. Gordon tells us what he as an individual has been doing within the community and what he intends to do if elected. This is exactly the type of literature that the other candidates should have put out but failed to do so.
Pilton Sucks suggested that local issues be the order of the day and Mr.Gordon and his party have delivered precisely that.
This is a no punches pulled leaflet aimed at highlighting concerns and issues and it reaches the parts that the other parties leaflets did not.
On the back of Forth Election News is some testimonies from a couple of local people as well as Councillor Cardownie and First Minister Alex Salmond.
All in all an excellent product and one that treats the voters with respect instead of trying to frighten them as the Lib Dems have done or say little or nothing as the Labour party did.
All three of the major parties had an opportunity to push home the local angle and tell us what they would do to improve the punters lot.
It would seem only the SNP are taking this election seriously if their election literature is anything to go by."

If I was a Lib Dem voter in Forth I would be voting SNP as Lib Dems came 4th last year in the ward.

Voting SNP gives the City Council administration a clear majority. A Lib Dem vote merely helps Labour.

There you go again, cant help slinging mud.

Yes the LibDem leaflets clearly state that at the last General Election the LibDems were second.

BTW that has been on every LibDem leaflet delivered since the last general election, not just those delivered in Forth.

Sorry you cant handle the truth.

#15

Another LibDem councillor would lead to a better run council. Another SNP councillor will still have to be told what to think, and if this story is true, how to cut his hair by his SNP masters.

BTW the SNP are not going to win.
So keep it local, vote LiDem.

I would hope all LibDem voters will pick the SNP as their second preference.

Likewise I would hope all SNP voters will pick the LibDems as their second preference.

My belief is that once the Greens and Tories are eliminated this election is going to be closer than you think.

I also think a strict diet is required.
This is not a dig at George Gordon, he probably would be the first to agree!
The general health of our politicians form ALL parties should be a cause for concern. Concidering the stresses and pressures, yes politicians do have these!
Haircuts are , as has been mentioned just finish touches to how a person looks.
If George does get in and I hope he does, hopefully not only will he make a difference in adding an SNP councillor to those already in the city chamber, but hopefully he will continue wth his 'makeover'

John Laughton is standing as an indepedent and while this drivel has been occuring im sure he is out doing his best!

George WAS forced to get this done and he was defeated to get the haircut by 2 votes. He ISNT well known- infact loathed by many established activists and does nothing in the area other than hold titles.

I dont think this is a 2 horse race, my money is on Laughton!

Loughton for the win!

Spot on Linda #10, a man's record of community service and a good heart is far more important than his appearance, however I'm sure you'll agree that standing for office does require a degree of smartness.

Good luck to George on November 6.
42

JoeMiddleton,

Edinburgh 24/10/2008 23:43:46
Who cares? George is a highly active local guy with or without his ponytail and if this is all the EEN can find to criticise him he must be doing very well.

Labour spent a fortune on trying to sell every council house to a private housing association. Why? Because Gordon Brown wouldn't release money otherwise due to his financial rules.

What rules were those? Yes, the ones which were ripped up to bail out the banks. Labour might occasionally try and talk left but they rule to the right and they have long outgrown any socialist principles they might have had.

Why should Labour want to privatise the housing stock?

Why do they want Trident?

Why do they want ID cards?

Why do they want to lock people up without a fair trial?

Why are they convinced Scotland is incapable of the normal powers of independence?

Answer: Because they have lost their political soul and that is why they don't deserve any votes in the Forth ward.
