Kilt is not just any old fling

A CAMPAIGN is under way to protect Scotland's most iconic piece of clothing.
The Government has backed an MEP and a renowned kilt designer, who believe the word "kilt" should only be used to describe a pure wool, hand-sewn garment made in Scotland.

Howie Nicholsby, 29, who owns 21st Century Kilts, has teamed-up with the SNP's Alyn Smith, in an effort to combat the influx of cheap, machine-made versions.

Absolutely 100% agree. Anything other than a PROPER kilt is just an embarassment to Scotland.

This sounds like Harley-Davidson's daft attempt to patent the sound that their bikes make when ticking over---"...like someone saying 'potato-potato' really fast".

You would have to be deaf, blind and stupid not to be able to tell the difference between a decent taylored kilt and a cheap, nasty one that looks like an overgrown dress for a schoolgirl.

Does this mean that the tailors in Savile Row are now going to insist that a suit is only called a suit if it has been bespoke tailored and made of the finest cloth?

Of course not. This is yet another case of hearts ruling heads.

I like this idea. If the tourist shops want to keep selling garbage, that's up to them, and the buyers will get what they deserve, but they shouldn't be able to call it a kilt.

For shame, imagine this guy thinking the army or regiments such as say the Black Watch have any connection with the traditions of the kilt.

Just out of interest any idea what the Irish and the Cornish for example call their feileadh-beag?

This reminds me of the classic 1959 Peter Sellers film, "The Battle of the Sexes". His character works for an Edinburgh kilt firm, and the owner is nearly swayed by an American woman management consultant into using (horrors!) "synthetic fiber!?!"

Happily, reason reigns and only good, Scottish wool is used. The way it should be.

When I buy a bullet-proof Harris tweed jacket or hat, I want the real thing.

Couldn't agree more!! There's no comparison.

They wouldn't like it if we took sari's to pakistan and india!
