Published Date: 23 May 2008
THE Conservatives today won a spectacular victory in the Crewe and Nantwich by-election, seizing the formerly safe Labour seat by a margin of almost 8000 votes.
The massive 17.6 per cent swing, overturning the 7000 majority achieved by the late Gwyneth Dunwoody in the 2005 general election, is another savage blow for Prime Minister Gordon Brown after Labour's drubbing at the May 1 local elections.

It is t
he first Conservative gain from Labour in a by-election for 30 years and if repeated in a general election, it would give the Tories a majority of over 300 in the House of Commons and reduce Labour to just 102 MPs.

Tory leader David Cameron described the result as "remarkable" and claimed it meant the "end of New Labour" but added: "I know we still have a long way to go."

The new Conservative MP Edward Timpson said the voters of Crewe and Nantwich had "sent a message loud and clear: Gordon just doesn't get it and the Government needs to change".

Mr Timpson identified Mr Brown's decision to scrap the 10p starting rate of income tax as one of the key factors which drove former Labour voters into the arms of the Tories.

Labour candidate Tamsin Dunwoody paid tribute to her mother and said the by-election had been a difficult mid-term contest.

Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman vowed the Government would "redouble its efforts" in addressing concern over the economy.

And she dismissed speculation about Gordon Brown's leadership, saying: "Circumstances are challenging but he is the right person to take us forward."

But left-wing Labour backbencher John McDonnell, who attempted to challenge Mr Brown for the leadership of the party last year, warned ministers against dismissing the result as "mid-term blues".

Mr McDonnell said: "Things are just going from bad to worse for the Government.

"The Prime Minister's re-launch after the disaster of the local election results has proved to be totally ineffective.

"This result demonstrates the overwhelming anger and contempt in which New Labour is now held by our traditional supporters."

"The lesson tonight for the Labour Party is that it is change or bust."

Tory shadow defence secretary Liam Fox hailed the outcome in the Cheshire seat as "a great result for the Conservatives" which showed the party was winning in the north of England once more.

He said: "It's a great result for David Cameron because I think that it gives him as leader tremendous authority. It is the best result we have had for 30 years.

"For Labour, it is a dire result. It is indicative of the fact that voters believe Gordon Brown has lost the plot. The campaign, going back to Old Labour class envy, has got its just reward."

Mr Cameron is expected to capitalise on victory by calling an early by-election in Henley, the seat due to be vacated by Boris Johnson, the new London Mayor. June 26 and July 3 are already being pencilled in as likely dates.

Good.

Labour have had this coming for a long time. The Labour party is in meltdown and has become the party of zero or bad policies.

Hmm ...,

... "Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman vowed the Government would "redouble its efforts" in addressing concern over the economy."

Timpson is absolutely correct - Labour really don't get it. It isn't "concern" that needs to be addressed, it is the economy itself that needs to be addressed. Then people wouldn't need to be concerned about it.

This self-indulgent Labour government is so into spin that it doesn't know fact from fiction.

And it is not just what it is doing that worries people - we are also very worried about why it wants to do so much more, increase detention time without charge, introduce road pricing which would be very expensive to administer and, by no means least, to hand over our independence to the EU without the promised referendum.

It doesn't just "know best" what is good for us, it hasn't just created a nanny state; it is Stalinist in inclination. And NONE of us want that.

Will Brown get the message? I doubt it. In his mind he will rationalise this disaster and truly believe the cr@p:

"oh, this is just the voters sending us a message, they don't really want to vote us out of power"

Wrong, this is a signal from the electorate that your time is up. Do not confuse it with a "warning".

"the removal of the 10p tax rate had unintended consequences".

Oh really! And what were the intended consequences pray? This is where Brown moves into the "we are listening" mode.

Right, Brown, listen to this. If you are serious about listening you need to do the following:

* restore the 10p tax rate and ditch this one-year partial fix

* abandon the ID Card proposals (the Tories will do it anyway)

* give us a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty

* cut fuel tax and give back your windfall profits

* abandon your plans for 42 day internment

And above all, stop being a complete @n@l retentive!

He will do none of the above because Brown doesn't "do" listening!

Good post, but one thing which you did miss from their 'to do' list (allowing of course that they want to be re-elected) is the question of Council Tax/LA funding.

Under Labour CT has shot up and they have made no attempt to stop high-spending Councils (supposedly John Prescott's responsibilty). The effect has been particularly felt here in Scotland.

Unless they tackle these problems, I don't see anything other than a Conservative government being returned at the next UK General Election.

Bible Brown & Dipstick Darling can only be counting their days.

Labour and their corrupt ridiculous gravy train and jobs fir the boys looked like getting halted but will the tories have the balls to reverse some of the ludicrous spending decisions, petty policies and to downsize local and national government to a level where civil servants do not outnumber bacteria throughout Britain!

I am really glad to see the disgusting Labour party getting their just deserts for a decade of kicking the public in the teeth, banning everything that some militant minority whinged about, allowing immigration to get out of control, allowing their councils to spend what they want and do what they want and for generally making life misery for millions as they slowly turned us from people into numbers.

Hopefully the numbers will never add up for them again !

Mr Speaker Martin(an excellent Speaker)Messrs Darling,Johnson,Balls,Alexander (and as for increasing the women's representation in Government)M/s Harman,Kelly,Blears Smith,Flint and Cooper(aka Balls)have done wonders for the prospects of future members of the fair sex - I don't think.
Trouble is when Call me Dave and his mob get in we will probably have years of hearing why nothing much can change due to the mess inherited "from 13 years of New Labour misrule".
Does that ring any bells???

Labour are due a good kicking because they've gradually managed to alienate everyone and they've got no one left who will speak up for them. But... Cameron? Apart from not being Brown, he'll do... err... what?
13

Listening,

Nothing unusal about this.

Because of the global issues happening right now, the ones out of the governments control, people are using this mid-term local election as an objection vote. This is not unusual as it happens to every government whenever there is a mid-term by election.

The fuel, credit and inflation issues are not down to the government but you will see that the government will handle them very well and the economy will recover pretty much to what it was perhaps with the exception of the fuel crisis.

Once this happens there will be a new interest in Labour. This is the government that has done a hell of a lot of good for the country as a whole and is taking a slating for things that are not their doing and that they will deal with admirably.

Whenever you hear any 'educated' discussion about this you will almost always find that it is positive and encouraging for the government. But you do have to go further than tabloid journalism for this. And yes you do have to go beyond political banter and rantings of politicians to see the real truth.

Labour have done a lot of good for the country ?? Ha Ha Ha . We have had a PM for 10 years who behaved like a jumped up celebrity , who trashed the authority of Parliament , who foisted on us the montrosity at Holyrood which the majority did not vote for , who sought to make his fame and fortune by going to war for his own benefit , who had dealings with very dubious people , who conspired to dumb down our TV because he did not want " serious " content ; I could go on and on .
And the present PM stole from pensions to finance " child-friendly " electoral bribes . Thank god they will be gone for ever soon .

#15 Listening,

You cannot really expect any of us to believe that load of verbosity.

#4 Connaughtboy put it quit nicely with his list (the last 2 entries are mine):

* restore the 10p tax rate and ditch this one-year partial fix

* abandon the ID Card proposals (the Tories will do it anyway)

* give us a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty

* cut fuel tax and give back your windfall profits

* abandon your plans for 42 day internment

* Replace Council Tax and restrict LA funding

* Do something meaningful about crime

These are some of the things purely and simply down to the Labour Party and about which they could do something (but won't).

This is a lot more than a mid-term 'glitch' Labour is on its way out and deserves to be.

I have never voted Conservative before Listening, but believe you me I am certainly thinking of doing so in the next General Election and certainly won't support Labour for the Scottish Parliament nor for the Local Authority (I was previously a Labour supporter, but have had to learn the hard way).

This Government couldn't run a booze up in brewery (with free beer).

18 - are you for real? the majority did not vote for holyrood???

There should be a Scottish Parliament - 74.3%

A Scottish Paliament should have tax-varying powers - 63.5%

Pull your head in!

Or are you one of these people who thinks that the WHOLE electorate has to vote for something to be valid? If so, then none of our post-war governments had any validity in your eyes!

No matter who was in charge of this country we would have still gone to Iraq, do not doubt it. It was the resoponsible and right thing to do and any government would have done the same.

The gap between rich and poor will ALWAYS widen, nothing you can do about that other than discriminate against the rich.

The 10p tax rule is a relatively new tax band, how did people manage before it? Very few people were effected by its removal. Yes it was wrong to remove it the way it was done. It should have been gradually scaled out.

#18...What the hell are you ranting about?
Some very poorly thought out remarks that show you for a fool.

Any time an opinion is posted that doesn't fall into the expected criteria of same people a barage of abuse and accusation of stupidity are thrown about.

You people appear to have anything positive to contribute.

The forums are a place for discussion of various opinions not back slapping SNP only stubborness.

You can keep your forums and thankfully there are educated and balanced people that can see through your ignorance.

Bluster, fury and envy - seems to be the traits of the modern Labour Party.

Anyone who disagrees with them is unrepresentative of opinions or is an extremist, people are too stupid to understand the complex issues of the world. We should leave it to the Labour Party - they know what they are doing.

Labour keep going on about how they lost the elections - the by election and the council elections in England - because people are worried about prices and the uncertainty of the global economy.

Wrong. People are deserting Labour because they have run out of patience with their patronising and arrogant detachment from reality.

Time for Labour to take a doing and to concentrate on rebuilding their ideas while in opposition.

23

artemisclyde,

"Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman vowed the Government would "redouble its efforts" in addressing concern over the economy."

No, Harriet, you're not listening or learning and Gogs has gone to ground again, hardly leading from the front. We just don't need more of the same "leadership" as we've had over the past 11 years, which is why we're in the economic mess we're in now. Who needs all those failed socialist redistribution policies and wasted funds mismanaged into nothingness as we pay exorbitant taxes that seem to increase daily.

If he was listening, he'd not only reinstate the 10p tax rate he'd chop back hard the iniquitous levels of fuel tax and rein in the excesses of multinationals going berserk with profit mania. And knock some heads together on the food supply chain. But we're not expecting anything different to happen any longer because it would interfere with his "vision" (hallucination?) of dishing out cash left right and centre on pet projects and overseas numbskulls who sideline it into their Swiss bank accounts.

Business needs to be encouraged not taxed out of existence and some attention needs to be paid to reducing national debt instead of allowing every Tom Dick and Harry into the country regardless of cost.

It's the very thing he boasts about - his alleged economic competence which is wrecked and largely by his own hand, not as he claims USA and global downturn.
