Published Date: 29 July 2008
FORMER justice minister Cathy Jamieson today launched her bid for the Scottish Labour leadership, arguing the party needed a "distinctive Scottish voice"
And she said the party had to get its message across to people who had disconnected from Labour.

She said: "If you listen to people on the doorstep in Glasgow East and elsewhere perhaps they are not entirely clear what Labour stands for in the 21s
t century."

Ms Jamieson is one of three frontrunners in the race to succeed Wendy Alexander, who quit earlier this month. Former health minister Andy Kerr and finance spokesman and East Lothian MSP Iain Gray are also bidding for the post.

Ms Jamieson said: "I'm putting myself forward because, although it's a difficult job, I believe it's one I have the experience and passion for Labour values and the skills to take head on.

"I want to see Scottish Labour having a distinctive Scottish voice. Sometimes we will take a different approach to that in other parts of the UK. I think that's perfectly acceptable."

Mr Kerr yesterday argued for the post of Scottish leader – which is officially only leader of the MSP group at Holyrood – to be given greater power.

But Ms Jamieson said a distinctive Scottish voice was "not about a Labour leader in Scotland having control' but more about 'building consensus' in the Labour movement.

She said: "I'm very proud to be Scottish, I'm passionate about Labour values and I'm positive about Scotland's future."

She said as leader she would work with local government, trades unions and wider society to ensure Scottish Labour articulated Scotland's concerns, stood up for Scotland's aspirations and fought for a fair deal for every citizen.

Great that Cathy is endorsing the SNP government:

She said: "I'm very proud to be Scottish, I'm passionate about Labour values and I'm positive about Scotland's future."

Suddenly she's all Scottish and not British haha!

Go Cathy go. Much more likely to try and work with the Salmond Government instead of pointlessly trying to take it head on.

Consensus will be better all round and actually give the Labour Party more credibility.

Iain could be but Andy will almost certainly be confrontational which would be fun to watch but less useful for the Labour Party or the country.

I do not recall the last time I heard a labour MSP use the word Scottish so often.

It is funny watching them trying to 'resonate with the electorate in Scotland' I only wished it was truly in their hearts not just an adjustment of political posture to gain more votes.

But will they ever be able to ignore the draw of a London job.

Would someone please put the labour Party out of it's misery. It's becoming painful to listen to!

In a situation where Labour is in melt down, Blairism has been replaced by the even worse policies and "leadership" of Brown and the LP has lost an estimated three million supporters through abstention in protest at the failed policies we have the same song from Jamieson and the others - " more of the same" seems to be their rallying call. We had Katy Clark an Newsnight last night- she is supposed to a beacon for socialism in Scotland but not once did she mention the S word and her critisicism of her own leadership was tame and pathetic. In the meantime the Campaign for Socialism in Scotland has lost its voice and is keeping that low it should be called the Campaign for Submarines.Where have all the heroes gone? Stand up and be counted for goodness sake you left wing wimps.

How can a party that only a few years ago had Smith, Brown, Cook and Reid? Have only this bunch to choose from.

Cathy Jamieson so bad she was when she was made education minister they never gave her reponsiblity for schools.

"Who remembers the famous photo of the wee ned giving Cathy the fingers? Yet another nippy uppity bint, what is it about nulabour?"

I do, it was priceless. That and Jonathan Watson's impression of her has holed her chances before this even starts never mind the fact that she has no ability.

She is either thicker than we thought, delusional or both, what a joke...

There are too many of these nippy women about - get rid of them

It can't be beyond the wit of man to find someone to hold their own against Supernat: there's no stopping the SNP as they gather protest votes, so I'm backing Kerr to deflate him with a few well placed sounbites about broken promises and how the problem with nationalists is that bread and butter policies are just add ons to a separation agenda that has no real support in Scotland.

dear Stuntman (is that that a typo? the S and the C are so close on a Eqery ketboard)
i understand Mr Kerr's nickname is "Dinnae" and it is being to show that he only Kerrs for himself, the party and the public in that order.
