Donations controversy MSP set to enter Labour leadership race

A LABOUR MSP who quit the frontbench in the midst of the donations controversy that engulfed Wendy Alexander said today he was considering standing for the party's leadership.
Charlie Gordon said: "I will not deny I am considering standing."

He is the latest politician to emerge as a potential candidate for the job of Labour's leader in the Scottish Parliament after Ms Alexander resigned at the weekend.

Acting leader Cathy Jamieson and health spokeswoman Margaret Curran have already said they are thinking about running, while MSP for East Lothian, Iain Gray, is also said to be considering a bid to succeed Ms Alexander.

Last year, Mr Gordon stood down as transport spokesman after admitting to making mistakes over a £950 donation to Ms Alexander's leadership campaign.

The donation, from Jersey-based businessman Paul Green, broke the law on foreign donations.

Mr Gordon said then that he had unwittingly told the campaign team that the donation was in order, after wrongly assuming the money had come through a Glasgow company in which Mr Green had a controlling interest.

Today he said: "I made a mistake, I've admitted that."

The infamous Charles Gordon, yet another fine example of the ineptitude of the Electoral Commission.

That he is considering standing for leadership of the Labour group in Scotland speaks volumes about the quality of candidates available.

Charlie Gordon might be the best thing for Labour since sliced McLeish. He's certainly been a wonderfully efficient overseas fundraiser, both for Alexander and his own constituency. ;-)

BTW, I hear there is another pending inquiry this time about some press release!

Ahh, another superbly qualified individual to lead the Scottish Labour Party further into the woods. What was Charlie before he became a MSP? I know he doesn't look bright, nor sound it either, but I am sure he was well deserving in the gravy train rankings!

If there was an Olympic event for barrel scraping Labour should compete. We might win a medal at the next games!

Any news on New Labour Sleaze and Corruption's (Glasgow City Council Branch) efforts to have the book, Halls Of Infamy, banned???

This is an everyday story of Labour Party sleaze, corruption, broon envelopes, backhanders, intimidation, planning irregularities...... you know all the usual tricks pulled by our own 'working class party'
Add the usual dose of nepotism and cronyism and the 'Halls of Infamy' could be a best-seller.

Will the Hootsmon be serialising it????

I'll say it again.
Until Labour loses these blokes, the ones who move effortlessly from shop steward to parliament, from researcher to safe seat, from University Debating Chamber to Holyrood, they will continue to look severely anachronistic.
Gordon, fresh from umpteen years running Glasgow City Council, was favoured in a safe seat over far, far more interesting and potentially exciting candidates. We were supposed to get a "Parliament of the Talents", not a step up for Toon Cooncillors.
Here's hoping he stands. I for one can't wait to hear him explain away his central role in Wendy's farcical fundraising campaign.

Wendy goes because of problems with dodgy donations and now the guy responsible for soliciting the illegal donation is trying to replace her. You could not make this up. Labour should have kicked this guy out the party.

This must be the most publicly corrupt party that i can remember.

'donations controversy' Evening News - why not just call it like it was - Good, Old-fashioned, West of Scotland Labour Corruption, given that the 'Glasgow company in which Mr Green had a controlling interest' was a property developer, dependent on Kooncil Patronage. Gordon epitomises the 'Monkey in a Red Rosette' syndrome - and 'The higher up the monkey climbs, the more it shows its @rs&'!
