A PIONEERING attempt to bring electric cars to the streets of the Capital has been scuppered by the city's tram project, one of its main backers said today.
A consortium including Japanese car firm Mitsubishi and the Royal Bank of Scotland had hoped to trial the Mitsubishi's i MiEV vehicles in Edinburgh as early as this summer.

The consortium driving the project – led by Edinburgh-based Ash Gupta – claim they were unable to finalise the necessary paperwork because council officials were too busy with the ongoing tram dispute.

Edinburgh had been among a number of cities vying to become the first in the UK to try out the battery-powered vehicles.

The Government's Technology Strategy Board is funding the pilot scheme.

Councillor Phil Wheeler, the city's transport convener, said a late change to the terms of the proposal had resulted in a council rethink.

Pity the plug isn't being pulled on the electric Tramline as well, "due to late changes to the terms of the proposal", and should result "in a council rethink".

What about it, Phil "buckled" Wheeler?

A step backwards. Something else to add to the charge-sheet for the instigators of the tram fiasco. I suspect the 'transport convener' just doesn't like the idea of privately controlled vehicles. And the phrase 'Council rethink' begs a question.

Stick a rather large pantograph (zig-zag electrical pick-up thingie) on the roof of any battery cars and they'll "take-off", LITERALLY! ZZZZZZOOOOOOOOMMMMM!!

Electric cars solve nothing. They are heavy, take huge amounts of power to charge up, have toxic batteries and don't do anything for congestion.
Where cars are the only option for travel the way forward will be via the electrically driven car powered by a fuel cell generator. But this too will not solve the congestion or parking problem.

Electric cars are at present unproved technology. Electric trains have been on the go for years. Get a grip, you start off with trams in Edinburgh and you extend them throughout the country, well you have to call them light rail by then. You have no worry about power, apart from understanding that they may only run when the wind or tide is running. When the oil in Scotland runs out, then the only stuff you buy is to lubricate the equipment. How long will it take for the folk in Scotland to realise that with trams and light rail you are definitely in a win win situation.
