Published Date: 29 May 2008
MIXU PAATELAINEN today jumped to the defence of Steven Fletcher after the Hibs striker became the latest player to pull out of Scotland's friendly against the Czech Republic.
The 21-year-old had been in line to win his second cap in tomorrow night's clash in Prague but was forced to withdraw from George Burley's squad suffering from a chest injury picked up in the final game of the SPL season a week ago.

Fletcher was the sixth star to step down, leaving Burley with only 18 players as the squad flew out today for the former Hearts manager's second game in charge of the national side.

Burley has already warned players they run the risk of putting their international career in jeopardy if they aren't prepared to turn up for games such as tomorrow's but today Paatelainen insisted Fletcher had been desperate to pull on a dark blue jersey again.

He said: "I think the fact Steven had delayed going on holiday in the hope he might be named in this squad shows his great desire to play for his country and that's great.

"He took a bang in the chest against Motherwell last Thursday and had to come off but, with a week to go before the Scotland game, we believed it would have cleared by now.

"The easy thing for Steven to do would have been to call off there and then but he was desperate to play and it's only after being assessed by the Scotland medical team over the past few days that he's been deemed unfit to travel.

"It's very disappointing and I am sure there's no-one more disappointed that Steven. He's just broken into the full squad and he is passionate about his country."

Paatelainen is certain Fletcher's injury isn't overly serious but Hibs' own medical staff will now get to work on diagnosing and treating the problem.

He said: "We thought the injury would have settled by now but Steven is still sore. I don't think it is anything big but we'll obviously do whatever is necessary to restore him to full health."

And Paatelainen insisted he would encourage any of his players to report for international duty. The former Finnish striker said: "I have no problem with players going to play for their country, I think it is a great thing.

"I was fortunate enough to play 70 times for Finland. I was very proud each time I played and I am sure it will be the same for our players."

Burley's squad had already been weakened through the unavailability of players with long-standing injury concerns such as Barry Ferguson, Allan McGregor and Lee McCulloch, but Paatelainen believes simple fatigue at the end of a long season is no excuse for pulling out of an international match.

He said: "I can only speak for myself but I always looked forward to playing for my country, even if it was summer time. But I would be very surprised if any player pulled out just because of a holiday."

Hibs today reminded season ticket holders they have until Monday to renew their seats. The ticket office will be open Saturday (9am to 3pm) and Sunday (10am to 4pm).

FOLLOW UP ON THE ALAN O'BRIEN STORY OF YESTERDAY

Daily Record story today says: 'Paatelainen insists no approaches have been received for the 23-year-old, but is not guaranteeing O'Brien's future at the club.

"There is always speculation, especially at this time of year," said Paatelainen in the Daily Record. "We've seen it with Steven Fletcher, Clayton Donaldson, Benji, O'Brien, Rob Jones and others.

"All these stories are just rumours at the moment rather than anything truthful.

"Time will tell whether they stay that way or not. It will all depend on the circumstances and if I'm being honest I don't know whether Alan will still be here next season."

-------------------------------------------------------

Bottom line would appear to be that is Hibs recover the £250k they paid to Newcastle, he will go and free up a big wage.

Why on earth is David Hardie stating -

Burley has already warned players they run the risk of putting their international career in jeopardy if they aren't prepared to turn up for games such as tomorrow's but today Paatelainen insisted Fletcher had been desperate to pull on a dark blue jersey again.

Fletch turned up for Scotland but was sent home by the Scotland medical team, he can't fall into the above category and has nothing to do with the number of Rangers players crying off pleading fatigue when half them only played bit parts through out the season.

Would be a good idea to move the following 'unsuitable' players on:

Donaldson, Benji and Kerr. We have already disposed of Mikael-Courier and Zarabi so if these players were also to go then the wages are there to sign better replacements. Requirements are (at least):

Stronger, ball winning midfielders (2 of) who can also start attacks and support the forwards with some goals. We get goals from Shiels and Zemmama so half a dozen or so more from the midfield can only be good for more points. Rankin does not do it for me although his forward runs should produce more goals.

A goalscoring penalty box forward in the Scott McDonald mould.

Another tall, fast central defender as these kind of players pick up bookings and red cards and the team needs one more player to add to the pool. If not, then its time to blood one or more of the young players from the reserves or under 19's.

A decent left full back to allow Hanlon time to mature.

Bit of a contradiction in your story Mr. Hardie. Fletcher didn't withdraw, you do that yourself. He was sent home by the Scotland medical team, an entirely different circumstance altogether.

#4 agree with all of that apart from the bit about Benji.. lad has never had a kick all season ( for whatever reason ) I would certainly play him instead of Nish... having said that I would never play 442 with the midfield we have, so it is a bit academic

Private Pike,

#4. If you cant see the gulf in class between Benji snd Antione then its no wonder you hold the opinion you do about Donaldson. When
ever I've seen him, and he hasn't played very often he's always been OK. Remember, he's still young and is making a big step up from the Conference. He needs games to improve but I believe he has the potential.

If all our players were as good as Nish and Rankin then maybe Donaldson wouldn't have had to make a step up at all.

#12 Sorry PP but I don't rate Donaldson at all. I just don't think he's good enough. Too lightweight and has great difficulty staying on his feet. He's fast yes and it's true he hasn't had much of a chance in the team this season but that could be because the coaches at ER don't think he's good enough either. For his own sake he would be better going back down to a lower level where he will get a start each week. That's the only way he will improve, if he can ! I'm not against the idea of loaning him out for a season though to see if he can bring up his standard.

lets see now - Fletch pops in a few top drawer goals and even does a fancy bicycle kick during the season and the hobo-flair-proclamation-machine goes into overdrive - yes, you couldn't make it up....Fletch is desperately but allegedly required by none-other than Barcelona!!

Wow-'wee'...that's a small 'wee'.

Then, after than the mighty Fletch's season disipates into a scoring record much along the lines of Clum (phone home) E L L I O T at hearts; Fletch scores something like one goal in the last dozen games or so....ouch.

Is that some kind of season of two halves?

Is it some kind of deeply sensed dichotomy (emphasis on the dich)?

Is it a catalonian curse?

Is Mixu not confident enough in his young prospect, to let him loose on the international stage OR is SF really suffering from a chest injury picked up in the final game of the SPL season a week ago?

Or does the hobo-flair-predicto-machine need calibrated, again?

Hobos gave it the BIG one all season long on the jambo threads thanks to us having the worst season in many supporters' living memory - and all the hobos could manage was one measely win and one measely draw better than us.

Yep - the hobo-flair-proclamation-machine does need calibrating - BIG TIME!!

#15 Odd I thought it was Real Madrid not Barcelona who were allegedly watching Fletcher. As they do with most young strikers in all the top leagues in Europe. It was the papers who started the story not Hibs or their fans. Funnily enough though it was right after that story broke that the goals dried up. It's entirely possible they had Elliott watched as well so who knows maybe Real watching a player puts a hex on them !

I have watched Donaldson in the reserves as well as the few appearances in the first team. His problem is, that although he is fast, he is powderpuff and weak both physically and in shooting. He is also, for such a big guy, of no use in the air. Compare him to an equally tall player like Cousin or Boyd and you will see where I am coming from. However, if Hibs (at the age of 24) give him another season then I would love to be proved wrong. Meanwhile how can others in tghe pipeline get a game if players like this block the way?

As for Benji, he looked world class in pre season against the likes of Stirling Albion. He had trimmed his weight down and we thought 'here is a guy who will deliver on the potential he showed last season'. So where did it all go wrong? He plays as if his heart is not in it! Again, in the unlikely event he stays, I would love to be proved wrong.

Nish, is a different kettle of Fish (or a similar word depending upon your opinion. However, once he came into the team, we got the best of Fletcher for a few weeks and that would be a valid reason for playing him if he can do that again - Fletcher himself will have to up his game though.

Football, while it has its stars, is essentially a team game and the right blend is usually required.

Iain Bhern,

#19 as I said N.O. I'd have no objection to Donaldson going out on loan. At least that way he's not keeping anyone else back, not at our club at least. However at 24 it's doubtful if he'll ever bulk up unless he is prepared to put in plenty hours in the gym. The only reservation I have there is that he may lose someof his speed. Personally I think it's time to say he's had his shot at the big time and it hasn't worked, let him go somewhere he will get a game.

#15 Quite right it was Real Madrid that were supposed to be watning to sign Fletcher - I think Barcelona wanted Elliot and the rest of the dance team for their half-time entertainment...don't think Fletch would have stooped to that level though, to give him his dues. Not sure if Shaggy wouldn't join the dance team though, he keeps going on about his mortgage and all that?

For Private Pike & Ian Bhern

In the year 2026, after the riots outside the Hibernian ticket office as 120,000 Hibernian supporters fought for only 15,000 tickets allocated to the club for the Champions League final, the Edinburgh Evening News (published on the successor to the world wide web only) will look back on season 2008/2009 when Hibernian's run of 18 successive SPL titles began. The team that season had used only 15 players, so agile were these players that injuries were non existent. Of these, 11 players had played in every match. David Hardie described every one as a star or an ace and how right he was. The players were:

Makalambay, Gatheussi, Jones, Hogg, Chisholm, Kerr, Murray, Benji, Shiels, Donaldson, O'Brien.

Also coming off the bench were Nish, Rankin, Campbell & McNeill - the latter having to take the field in the 2nd half of the last game when Maka fell asleep in the toilet at half time and ccould not be wakened.

Second rate players like Fletcher, Zemamma and Van Zanten could not get on, even from the bench and eventually signed for Hearts for season 2009/2010 to help with their promotion attempt from division 1 of the SFL.

Statistics were:

Games 38, won 38, lost 0.
Points 114
Goals for 228, against 7 (all penalties v old firm)
Scorers:

Donaldson 74
Benji 32
Jones 12
Murray 12
Shiels 28
Hogg 10
Gatheussi 20
O'Brien 20
Makalambay 7
Chisholm 1 (header)
O.G. 12
Kerr 0

Also remembered was the expansion of Easter Road stadium to 20,000 in the same season although later further expanded to 24,000 by popular demand in season 2012/2013.

Yes, in 2026 we will yearn for the good old days when season tickets cost around £400 compared to the 2026 cost of £4000 and a 5 year waiting list.

But the close season will still have the fans wishing away the weeks till the next campaign begins and another successful champions league run.
